3. MAJOR GARRATH WILLIAMS is an Instructor at
The Officer Training Wing at the Land Warfare Centre in
Canungra. Garrath commissioned into the British Army
from The Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst and joined
his regiment in Germany in 1999 before transferring to the
Australian Army in 2004. His military service has seen him
serve in Kosovo, Canada, The Solomon Islands and most
recently Afghanistan.
During his time in Afghanistan Garrath was in command of
the 156 men that made up Combat Team Delta, an integral
and ever flexible part of the Mentoring Task Force operating
throughout Uruzgan Province. Preparing for and conducting
such a deployment brought with it many leadership
challenges and genuine rewards; such rewards are what
have made his career choice worthwhile.
As an Army Officer Garrath has always revelled in the
diversity such a job entails. Whether it was learning cross-
country skiing and arctic survival in Norway, mounting
guard at Buckingham Palace, digging a trench in Wales,
playing rugby in New Zealand, assisting Brisbane residents
deal with severe storm damage or conducting operations in
the green-zone of Afghanistan. His experiences will live with
him forever.
Garrath enjoys all sports and fortunately his chosen career
has allowed him to practice them as much as his boss of
the time allows. He has a successful and patient wife and
a young son who Garrath very much enjoys spending time
with now his new role at Canungra permits.
PERRY CROSS - A rugby tackle in 1994, at the age of
19, left Perry Cross a profoundly disabled quadriplegic,
unable to move and on a life support machine. Faced
with a life of oblivion, he made an immensely courageous
choice to ‘get moving’. He not only achieved this but has
excelled in life ever since and is a tremendous role model
for the human spirit in overcoming the odds.
In 1996, Perry was runner-up in the prestigious
International Communicator of the Year Awards. He has
been named Suncorp Young Queenslander of the Year and
was a finalist in the Young Australian of the Year Awards.
The year 2000 saw Perry complete a Communications
and Business degree at Bond University – another
groundbreaking first.
Perry has also travelled to the United States as an advisor
to the United Nations General Assembly on behalf of
Young Australians. While in New York, he met the late
Christopher Reeve to discuss research and raise awareness
and funds towards a cure for paralysis. Since then the
Perry X Foundation has been launched to raise money for
this cause.
Perry has recently travelled to India to receive Stem Cell
therapy that has enabled him to breathe again, yet another
incredible moment.
To complement the inspirational sessions presented to
you by our guest speakers, a challenging and thought-
provoking program of activities has been planned. We
hope all participants will discover creative ways to
unleash their leadership potential by applying their
passion for life.
