6. How should I design paper pages ?
Follow the five guidelines
7. Use white space to separate & emphasize points
Use headings to group points
Limit the use of words set in all capital letters
Use no more than two fonts in a single document
Decide whether to justify margins based on the situation & audience
Five guidelines :
8. White space makes material easier to
read by emphasizing the material that it
seperates from the rest of the text.
9. Use headings
Use a mix of paragraph lengths (no longer than 7 typed lines)
Use lists (tabs, numbered, or bullet)
To create white space :
10. Words or short phrases that group
points and divide your letter, memo,
or report into section
Heading
Basic Rules
Make heading specific
Make each heading cover all material until the next heading
Keep headings at any one level parallel
(all nouns, all complete sentences, or all questions)
11. Justified
margins
o Can use proportional typefaces
o Want a more formal look
o Want to use as few pages as
possible
o Write to skilled readers
Ragged
right
margins
o Do not have proportional
typefaces
o Want a less formal look
o Use a very short line length
Justify Margins Based
on the Situation and the Audience
17. How should I design presentation slides ?
Keep slides simple, relevant, & interesting
18.
19. Every presenter has the potential to
be great; every presentation is high
stakes; and every audience deserves
the absolute best.
- Nancy Duarte
20. Basic guidelines :
Use big font: 44- or 50-point for titles, 32- point for subheads,
& 28-point for examples
Use bullet-point phrases rather than complete sentences
Use clear, concise language
Make only 3 to 5 points on each slide.
27. ... he plans presentations well before
he opens the presentation software.
Steve jobs thinks, brainstorms, sketches
and collaborates well before the first
slide is created. Very few presenters
do that. ...he rehearses...for many
hours over many weeks. Few people
practice as much as they should.
28. How should I design web pages ?
Pay attention to content, navigation, & first screen
30. Use small graphics
As you design pages :
Provide visual variety
Provide a link to home page (on each page)
Put an off button (if the pages include music or sound effects)
37. Watch someone as he/ she uses the
document to do a task.
Where does the reader pause, reread, or
confused?
How long does it take?
Does the document enable the reader to
complete the task accurately?
38. Learning the reader’s thought
processes
Ask the reader to think aloud while
complementing the task
Interrupt the reader at key points to ask
what he/ she is thinking
Ask the reader to describe the thought
process after completing the document
39. Test the document with the people
who are most likely to have trouble
Very old/ young readers
People with little education
People with different language
41. Create good design
by computer
Standard word-
processing programs
Such as Word, WordPerfect, & Google Docs let
you control how your page looks.
42. o Use bold headings
o Choose a businesslike font (11- or 12-)
o Use header with automatic numbering
o Use tabs or indents to line up the return
address & signature blocks
o Check print preview on file menu to how
the document will look on the page
Basic rules
43. When should I think
about design ?
At each stages of the writing process
45. Sun
As you plan, think about your
audience :
Are they skilled readers?
Are they busy ?
Will they read the document straight throuh or
skip around in it ?
46. As you write, incorporate lists & headings :
use visuals
clearly & forcefully
49. 1 Create visually attractive documents
By using white space & heading, justify margins, and limit capital letters
2 Design slides
By using big font, bullet-point phrases, clear & concise language
3 Web pages:good content & interesting design
Keep graphic small, provide visual variety, clear to readers
4 Know whether the design works
By test the document by observe readers
5 Computer to create good design
By using WordPerfect & Word to control how pages looks
6 Think about design at every stage
As you plan, as you write, get feedback, and as you revise
