World Cup Knockout Stage
This newly built 42,374 capacity stadium is the most northerly of all the stadia being used at the World
Cup this summer. The Arena da Amazônia is based in the city of Manaus in the Amazonas region of
the country and is likely to be one of the hottest and most humid locations this summer. In fact England
manager Roy Hodgson criticized the location before the draw saying the extreme heat in the location
would make it difficult for the players.
By a large coincidence his England side were drawn to play Italy at the Arena da Amazônia in the
headline event of the four matches to be hosted in the city. The stadium itself caused more
consternation as it was still under construction at the start of 2014 and doubts were raised if it could be
completed in time for this summer. However, they finished the stadium by March 2014 and the inaugural
match was a traditional North Brazilian cup clash between the new residents of the stadium Nacional
and Remo.
The Arena da Amazônia is built on the site of the Estádio Vivaldo Lima, a stadium that stood from 1970
until its demolition in 2011. That older stadium was more commonly known as Vivaldão and, although
Manaus is not a hotbed of Brazilian football, had a record attendance of 56,950 fans for the Nacional v
New York Cosmos clash in 1980.
The newer stadium will not have anything like that attendance with a capacity of just over 42,000 but
with the England v Italy match, as well as USA v Portugal and two other games, there is sure to be
plenty of exciting football and great spectacles to been seen in his northerly part of the country this
summer.
Arena da Amazônia World Cup Matches:
June 14th – England v Italy – Group D
June 18th – Cameroon v Croatia – Group A
June 22nd – USA v Portugal – Group G
June 25th – Honduras v Switzerland – Group E

Officially known as the Estádio Joaquim Américo Guimarães, the Arena da Baixada is a 15 year old
stadium, opening in Curitiba in December 1999 will host four World Cup matches this upcoming

There has been a football stadium at this location for a hundred years and the stadium original stadium

in 1984 and stood for 13 years before being demolished for the newly built Arena da Baixada in 1999,
which has left the stadium considered one of the most modern and best appointed stadiums in Brazil.
Atlético Paranaense, who play in the Brazilian Serie A and finished 3rd in 2013, are the residents of this
stadium in the South of the country. The record attendance at the stadium is 31,700 when Atlético
Paranaense beat São Caetano 4-2 in the first game of the 2011 Brazilian Championship finals. The
capacity will be boosted for the World Cup to almost 44,000 to allow more supporters to enjoy the
football festivities on show in this southerly part of Brazil.
The headline event at the Arena da Baixada will be the clash of Australia and the world champions
Spain in their Group B match, but the fans will also be treated to the sight of Ecuador and Russia as
both teams get the opportunity to play their exciting brands of football against Honduras and Algeria

The 45,000 capacity Arena das Dunas was designed by famed sports architect Christopher Lee, who
designed his creation as “the most perfect stadium in South America”, began construction in 2011 on
the site of the demolished 39 year old Machadão stadium. The stadium was completed at the start of
the year and was officially opened late in January 2014 by Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, FIFA
Secretary General Jérôme Valcke and Local Organising Committee (LOC) Chairman Jose Maria Marin.
The stadium is located in the city of Natal, the capital of the Rio Grande do Norte state, and will host the
sides América-RN and ABC following the completion of the World Cup. The older stadium that
previously occupied this location had a highest capacity of 55,000, although it’s maximum was 42,000 at
the end of its life, with a highest attendance record of 53,320 set in a 1972 clash of Santos and ABC.
The new Arena das Dunas will have a lower overall capacity, but with some impressive fixtures to be
played in this North-East section of Brazil, including Italy v Uruguay and Ghana v USA, we are sure that
the venue is going to be a sell out and will last long in the memories of the visitors to the area.
Arena das Dunas World Cup Matches:
June 13th – Mexico v Cameroon – Group A
June 16th – Ghana v USA – Group G
June 19th – Japan v Greece – Group C
June 24th – Italy v Uruguay – Group D

World Cup Knockout Stage
The Arena de São Paulo is the future home of Brazilian side Corinthians after the stadium was custom
built for the 2014 World Cup and it will be the fifth largest stadium in the top tier of Brazilian football
once fully completed. It will have a seating capacity of 48,234, but it will have a capacity of 65,000 for
the World Cup this summer with the addition of more than 21,000 temporary seats for the duration of
the Final.
The stadium is located in São Paulo and post the World Cup the stadium will be known as Arena
Corinthians when the five time Brazilian champions left their current home of Pacaembu after a 74 year
spell at the ground. It has cost more than £215 million to build this impressive stadium but it has had a
troubled time during its construction.
Two workers were killed in November 2013 as a crane failed while the builders and FIFA were at odds
over the progress of construction as late as March 2014. The builders reported that the stadium was
98.82% completed, while FIFA found that the stadium was only 92% completed.
Despite this, the stadium will shine come June 12th as it hosts the opening match of the 2014 World
Cup. It’s 105 by 68 metre pitch, sown with Perennial Ryegrass and intertwined with 22 million artificial
fibres, promises to display some of the best football in the competition this summer.
Will that be true? Let’s hope it’s controversial construction does not carry over once the stadium is ready
to go on April 15th.

World Cup Knockout Stage
Based in the Eastern seaboard city of Salvador the Itaipava Arena Fonte Nova, or the Complexo
Esportivo Cultural Professor Octávio Mangabeira to give it its full title, is a stadium that played a vital
part at the 2013 Confederations Cup and will host six matches this summer.
The Arena Fonte Nova is a newly built stadium that opened in April 2013 following a roof collapse of the
older Estádio Fonte Nova in 2007. Following this incident that saw seven people killed the owners of the
stadium, the Bahia government, tore down the stadium with the Arena Fonte Nova going up on the site
of the older ground. Ground was broken on the site in 2010 and it opened with the match of Vitória v
Bahia with the game ending 5-1.
There were issues with the stadium again though with supporters reporting blind spots as well as
excessive dust and puddles all coming from that first match, while after just six weeks there was a
partial roof collapse after heavy rain collected. All of these issues have been resolved and the stadium
as a success at the 2013 Confederations Cup.
There were three matches played at the Arena Fonte Nova, now known as the Itaipava Arena Fonte
Nova thanks to a ten year sponsorship with the Itaipava brewery, during the 2013 ConfederationsCup
produced 13 goals, including six in the thrilling 4-2 Brazil win over Italy as well as four goals and penalty
shootout in the third/fourth playoff between Uruguay and Italy.
We are expecting plenty more action and excitement at the Arena Fonte Nova this summer and with
matches like Spain v Netherlands and Germany v Portugal we are confident of seeing this happen in
Salvador at the 2014 World Cup this summer.
Arena Fonte Nova World Cup Matches:
June 13th – Spain v Netherlands – Group B
June 16th – Germany v Portugal – Group G
June 20th – Switzerland v France – Group E
June 25th – Bosnia and Herzegovina v Iran – Group F
July 1st – Winner Group H v Runner Up Group G – Last 16 stage

World Cup Knockout Stage
One of the newly built stadia erected for the specific purpose of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil this
coming summer, the Arena Pantanal was built of the site of the Estádio Governador José Fragelli in the
city of Cuiabá in the western area of the country.
The old stadium, which was more commonly called Verdão, was built in the mid 1970′s and was
demolished in 2010 to make way for the newer arena. Arena Pantanal has been nicknamed O Verdão
meaning The Big Green and is an apt name as the theme of the stadium throughout its inception,
construction and maintenance has been sustainability.
This theme is not unexpected for this region of Brazil as it is one of the most flora and fauna rich areas
of the country. The stadium itself been built with downsizing once the World Cup is over in mind and
could be used for a number of different things, with football being one. Local clubs Mixto and Operario
may choose to take up residence at the stadium, but if not then there is ample opportunity for the venue
and it’s ample covering to used to host concerts, shows and exhibitions. All this leads back to the
sustainability theme for the stadium and local area and economy once the biggest show in world football
leaves town.
The venue will host four World Cup matches with South American sides, and dark horses to win the
World Cup, Chile and Colombia both playing one group game at the Arena Pantanal against Asian
Federation sides Australia and Japan respectively in the headline matches at the stadium.
Arena Pantanal World Cup Matches:
June 13th – Chile v Australia – Group B
June 17th – Russia v South Korea – Group H
June 21st – Nigeria v Bosnia and Herzegovina – Group F
June 24th – Japan v Colombia – Group C

Home of Brazilian Serie B side Náutico, the Arena Pernambuco is a 46,160 capacity stadium located on
the East coast of Brazil in the city of São Lourenço da Mata. Just like the Arena Fonte Nova also
located on the eastern coast of the country, although further to the south, the stadium is sponsored by
the Itaipava brewery.
The stadium is one of the new built stadia in use at the 2014 World Cup having begun building in 2010
in October of that year before opening its doors in April 2013 before being used in the 2013
Confederations Cup competition. The stadium hosted three matches and 18 goals were produced in
these games, with Spain beating Uruguay 2-1, Italy winning 4-3 against Japan and Uruguay claiming a
thumping 8-0 win over minnows Tahiti.
The stadium itself is part of a massive redevelopment of the Recife metropolitan area of São Lourenço
da Mata and a university campus, indoor arena, hotel and a convention centre as well as business and
residential units on top of a large entertainment centre. This has given the whole area a boost and
makes it a great place to visit for matches this summer.
The Arena Pernambuco will host five World Cup games this summer with Italy and Japan returning for
the second successive summer. The highlight of the matches from the group stages will be the USA v
Germany clash from Group G with one of the favourites from Europe look to defeat a side managed by
a German in World Cup winner Jurgen Klinsmann.
Arena Pernambuco World Cup Matches:
June 14th – Côte d’Ivoire v Japan – Group C
June 20th – Italy v Costa Rica – Group D

World Cup Knockout Stage
Home of Sport Club Internacional and officially known by its full title of Estádio José Pinheiro Borda the
Estádio Beira-Rio is a stadium located in Porto Alegre that will be used on five occasions during the
2014 World Cup.
The stadium is named after José Pinheiro Borda, an elderly engineer who supervised the building of the
stadium but passed away before seeing it’s completion. The Estádio Beira-Rio is, unlike many of the
other stadia used in this summer’s World Cup tournament, a privately owned property with Internacional
themselves owning the ground and dedicating the ground to Borda following their move from the Estádio
dos Eucaliptos was a fantastic tribute to a man held in high esteem by the club.
The stadium is the most southerly stadium to be used this summer was built between 1956 and 1969,
opening in April of that final year and was recently renovated to bring it up to standard for the World
Cup. The renovated stadium reopened in February 2014, with a new roof to cover the stands and help
protect the supporters from any rain or heat being the biggest change to the stadium, and the home side
Internacional will celebrate the reopening with a match against Penarol of Uruguay at the start of April.
The record attendance at the stadium, pre-renovation, was 106,554 in June 1972 as the Brazilian
national side played a friendly match against the Rio Grande do Sul All Stars that ended 3-3. Following
renovations the capacity of the stadium is 51,300 with a further 5,000 VIP seats that will be converted
into regular seats for Internacional following the end of the World Cup to give them a 56,000 seater
stadium for their home games.
Some of the biggest names and World Cup favourites will be playing their football at the Estádio Beira-
Rio this summer and the fans can expect to be treated to some fantastic football from the Netherlands
and Argentina especially.
Estádio Beira-Rio World Cup Matches:
June 15th – France v Honduras – Group E
June 18th – Australia v Netherlands – Group B
June 22nd – South Korea v Algeria – Group H

The Estádio Castelão is known by many names, with its full name being the Estádio Plácido Aderaldo
Castelo where it is named after the Governor of Ceará between 1966 and 1971 – Plácido Aderaldo
Castelo – who was the major force behind getting the stadium built. The stadium is also known as
Gigante da Boa Vista as well as Estádio Castelão.
The ground is owned by the Ceará state government and homes two clubs, Ceará Sporting Club and
Fortaleza Esporte Clube who play in Serié B and Serié C respectively. The stadium is well used and has
been open since late 1973, but has been recently refurbished. The changes and updates to the stadium
were begun in 2002 and finished a decade later in time for the stadium to host three matches at the
2013 Confederations Cup.
The Estádio Castelão saw Brazil beat Mexico 2-0 last summer, and on June 17th will host a repeat of
that match, as well seeing Spain beat Nigeria 3-0 in the group stage and the Spain v Italy Semi Final
that needed a thrilling penalty shootout for the sides to be separated. The stadium will host a further five
matches on top of the Brazil v Mexico game this summer and with some big sides and matches to be
played in Ceará we expect the 67,037 capacity to sell out for the majority, if not all, of the matches.
The venue holds the record for the first of the 12 stadiums being built or redeveloped for the World Cup
to be finished and we cannot wait for the action to get underway at the Estádio Castelão on June 14th
with the clash of Uruguay v Costa Rica.
Estádio Castelão World Cup Matches:

World Cup Knockout Stage
Officially known as the Estádio Jornalista Mário Filho, the Maracanã was opened in 1950 was built as
the biggest and best stadium for that year’s World Cup Finals in the country. The first competitive match
held at the stadium was the opening game of those Finals on June 24th 1950 as Brazil claimed a
thumping 4-0 victory over Mexico.
It was not all good news for Brazil at the Maracanã though as they were beaten 2-1 in the final at the
stadium as Uruguay claimed their second ever World Cup win. Despite this, the final of that tournament
holds a record to this day as there were supposedly a large number of fans on top of the 199,854
paying viewers leading historians to believe that there were as many as 210,000 fans in attendance that
day!
The stadium was recently rebuilt before the unofficial dry run of the 2014 World Cup, the 2013
Confederations Cup, and after it featured prominently last year it will do so again this coming summer as
well as hosting the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2016 Olympics and Paralympics. It holds the
honour of being selected as the stadium that will host the 2014 World Cup Final too as it becomes just
the second stadium following the Estadio Azteca in Mexico to host two World Cup Finals.
Following the rebuild of the stadium that saw its two tier configuration for the seating plan of the stadium
changed to a single tier setting and having a new roof added, the stadium no longer has the ability to
host more than 200,000 people and the seating capacity now stands at 78,838. The opening match at
the newly repurposed stadium saw Brazil and England play out a thrilling 2-2 draw. Will the matches at
the Maracanã this summer provide us with the same level of entertainment and exhilaration?

Officially known as the Estádio Governador Magalhães Pinto, the Estádio Mineirão is the largest football
stadium in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. It was built in 1965 and after being a vital part of the
2013 Confederations Cup it will be integral to both the upcoming World Cup this summer and the 2016
Olympics.
Last summer’s Confederations Cup saw the stadium gain a reputation for matches with plenty of goals
and attacking football as the three matches played resulted in 13 goals. Tahiti v Nigeria was the match
that saw the most amount of goals with seven goals scored as the African side claimed a large 6-1 win
and we’ll certainly be hoping that the Estádio Mineirão continues in this trend of producing goals this
summer.
In fact with all of the group matches played here seeing one of the group favourites facing a minnow
team, there is a definite chance of this keeping up, resulting in the stadium being fondly remember after
the tournament has been concluded.
With the Confederations Cup, World Cup and Olympic Games in mind, the stadium was renovated to
bring it up to FIFA standards in late 2012. Although the capacity of the stadium is now 62,170, the
stadium has been known to hold much, much more than this. The record attendance at the Estádio
Mineirão is 132,834 for the match of Cruzeiro v Villa Nova in the final match of the state league in 1997.
Women and children were allowed in free, as was the style at the time in Brazil, for this match and the
attendance was broken down to 74,857 paying fans and 56,618 women and children who watched the
game for free and helped set this outstanding record.
The capacity of the stadium was reduced to 72,000 under FIFA orders, but although we’ll only have half
the amount of people in the stands for the World Cup this summer as that day in 1997 we’re sure that
there will be just as exhilarating an atmosphere as the fans cheer on the World Cup sides!

World Cup Knockout Stage
Based in Brasília in the centre of the country, the Estádio Nacional Mané Garrincha has had a new look
in recent times following it’s refurbishment for the 2013 Confederations Cup. After being used for just a
single match last summer, the stadium will feature much more prominently at this summer’s World Cup
Finals with seven matches, including the clash of the defeated Semi Finalists, scheduled to play at the
venue.
The stadium was originally built in 1974 and was named after the Brazilian football legend Garrincha
who won two World Cup Finals with the country in 1958 and 1962, including taking the Golden Ball and
Golden Boot in the ’62 Finals for best player and top goal scorer as well as making the All Star Team.
He was also named in the FIFA World Cup All Time Team in 1994.
The Stadium was erected when Garrincha was 40 and it was Corinthians who claimed the first ever
victory at the stadium with a 2-1 win over CEUB in March of 1974. The previous attendance record at
the original stadium was 51,200, but this was beaten last summer when Brazil defeated Japan 3-0 in
the Confederations Cup as 67,423 people watched from the stands.
With the capacity of the Estádio Nacional Mané sitting at 70,064 you can be sure that this summer’s
World Cup will see that record broken again, with the Cameroon v Brazil match on June 23rd
guaranteed to sell out. The big question is, will the stadium provide the magic, brilliance and exhilarating
football similar to what the man it is dedicated to used to show on a weekly basis?
Estádio Nacional Mané Garrincha World Cup Matches:
June 15th – Switzerland v Ecuador – Group E
June 19th – Colombia v Côte d’Ivoire - Group C
June 23rd – Cameroon v Brazil – Group A
June 26th – Portugal v Ghana – Group G
June 30th – Winner Group E v Runner Up Group F – Last 16 stage
July 5th – Winner Match 55 v Winner Match 56 – Quarter Finals
July 12th – Loser Match 61 v Loser Match 62 – Third/Fourth Place Playoff

The Stadium Guide - World Cup 2014

  • 1.
  • 2. 24/7 CUSTOMER SUPPORT SIGN IN CASINO SPORTS PROMOTIONS JOIN NOW! Home World Cup News World Cup Teams Match Schedule World Cup Groups World Cup Knockout Stage This newly built 42,374 capacity stadium is the most northerly of all the stadia being used at the World Cup this summer. The Arena da Amazônia is based in the city of Manaus in the Amazonas region of the country and is likely to be one of the hottest and most humid locations this summer. In fact England manager Roy Hodgson criticized the location before the draw saying the extreme heat in the location would make it difficult for the players. By a large coincidence his England side were drawn to play Italy at the Arena da Amazônia in the headline event of the four matches to be hosted in the city. The stadium itself caused more consternation as it was still under construction at the start of 2014 and doubts were raised if it could be completed in time for this summer. However, they finished the stadium by March 2014 and the inaugural match was a traditional North Brazilian cup clash between the new residents of the stadium Nacional and Remo. The Arena da Amazônia is built on the site of the Estádio Vivaldo Lima, a stadium that stood from 1970 until its demolition in 2011. That older stadium was more commonly known as Vivaldão and, although Manaus is not a hotbed of Brazilian football, had a record attendance of 56,950 fans for the Nacional v New York Cosmos clash in 1980. The newer stadium will not have anything like that attendance with a capacity of just over 42,000 but with the England v Italy match, as well as USA v Portugal and two other games, there is sure to be plenty of exciting football and great spectacles to been seen in his northerly part of the country this summer. Home World Cup News World Cup Teams Match Schedule World Cup Groups World Cup Knockout Stage Officially known as the Estádio Joaquim Américo Guimarães, the Arena da Baixada is a 15 year old stadium, opening in Curitiba in December 1999 will host four World Cup matches this upcoming summer, including a match featuring the reigning World Champions Spain. There has been a football stadium at this location for a hundred years and the stadium original stadium was named Estádio Joaquim Américo Guimarães in 1934 before closing down in the 1970′s. It reopened in 1984 and stood for 13 years before being demolished for the newly built Arena da Baixada in 1999, which has left the stadium considered one of the most modern and best appointed stadiums in Brazil. Atlético Paranaense, who play in the Brazilian Serie A and finished 3rd in 2013, are the residents of this stadium in the South of the country. The record attendance at the stadium is 31,700 when Atlético Paranaense beat São Caetano 4-2 in the first game of the 2011 Brazilian Championship finals. The capacity will be boosted for the World Cup to almost 44,000 to allow more supporters to enjoy the football festivities on show in this southerly part of Brazil. The headline event at the Arena da Baixada will be the clash of Australia and the world champions Spain in their Group B match, but the fans will also be treated to the sight of Ecuador and Russia as both teams get the opportunity to play their exciting brands of football against Honduras and Algeria respectively. We see there being a fantastic feast of exciting football played at the one of the most historic football locations in all of Brazil this summer. The stadium was completed at the start of the year and was officially opened late in January 2014 by Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, FIFA Secretary General Jérôme Valcke and Local Organising Committee (LOC) Chairman Jose Maria Marin. The stadium is located in the city of Natal, the capital of the Rio Grande do Norte state, and will host the sides América-RN and ABC following the completion of the World Cup. The older stadium that previously occupied this location had a highest capacity of 55,000, although it’s maximum was 42,000 at the end of its life, with a highest attendance record of 53,320 set in a 1972 clash of Santos and ABC. The new Arena das Dunas will have a lower overall capacity, but with some impressive fixtures to be played in this North-East section of Brazil, including Italy v Uruguay and Ghana v USA, we are sure that the venue is going to be a sell out and will last long in the memories of the visitors to the area. It will have a seating capacity of 48,234, but it will have a capacity of 65,000 for the World Cup this summer with the addition of more than 21,000 temporary seats for the duration of the Final. The stadium is located in São Paulo and post the World Cup the stadium will be known as Arena Corinthians when the five time Brazilian champions left their current home of Pacaembu after a 74 year spell at the ground. It has cost more than £215 million to build this impressive stadium but it has had a troubled time during its construction. Two workers were killed in November 2013 as a crane failed while the builders and FIFA were at odds over the progress of construction as late as March 2014. The builders reported that the stadium was 98.82% completed, while FIFA found that the stadium was only 92% completed. Despite this, the stadium will shine come June 12th as it hosts the opening match of the 2014 World Cup. It’s 105 by 68 metre pitch, sown with Perennial Ryegrass and intertwined with 22 million artificial fibres, promises to display some of the best football in the competition this summer. Will that be true? Let’s hope it’s controversial construction does not carry over once the stadium is ready to go on April 15th. The Arena Fonte Nova is a newly built stadium that opened in April 2013 following a roof collapse of the older Estádio Fonte Nova in 2007. Following this incident that saw seven people killed the owners of the stadium, the Bahia government, tore down the stadium with the Arena Fonte Nova going up on the site of the older ground. Ground was broken on the site in 2010 and it opened with the match of Vitória v Bahia with the game ending 5-1. There were issues with the stadium again though with supporters reporting blind spots as well as excessive dust and puddles all coming from that first match, while after just six weeks there was a partial roof collapse after heavy rain collected. All of these issues have been resolved and the stadium as a success at the 2013 Confederations Cup. There were three matches played at the Arena Fonte Nova, now known as the Itaipava Arena Fonte Nova thanks to a ten year sponsorship with the Itaipava brewery, during the 2013 ConfederationsCup produced 13 goals, including six in the thrilling 4-2 Brazil win over Italy as well as four goals and penalty shootout in the third/fourth playoff between Uruguay and Italy. The old stadium, which was more commonly called Verdão, was built in the mid 1970′s and was demolished in 2010 to make way for the newer arena. Arena Pantanal has been nicknamed O Verdão meaning The Big Green and is an apt name as the theme of the stadium throughout its inception, construction and maintenance has been sustainability. This theme is not unexpected for this region of Brazil as it is one of the most flora and fauna rich areas of the country. The stadium itself been built with downsizing once the World Cup is over in mind and could be used for a number of different things, with football being one. Local clubs Mixto and Operario may choose to take up residence at the stadium, but if not then there is ample opportunity for the venue and it’s ample covering to used to host concerts, shows and exhibitions. All this leads back to the sustainability theme for the stadium and local area and economy once the biggest show in world football leaves town. The venue will host four World Cup matches with South American sides, and dark horses to win the World Cup, Chile and Colombia both playing one group game at the Arena Pantanal against Asian Federation sides Australia and Japan respectively in the headline matches at the stadium. The stadium is named after José Pinheiro Borda, an elderly engineer who supervised the building of the stadium but passed away before seeing it’s completion. The Estádio Beira-Rio is, unlike many of the other stadia used in this summer’s World Cup tournament, a privately owned property with Internacional themselves owning the ground and dedicating the ground to Borda following their move from the Estádio dos Eucaliptos was a fantastic tribute to a man held in high esteem by the club. The stadium is the most southerly stadium to be used this summer was built between 1956 and 1969, opening in April of that final year and was recently renovated to bring it up to standard for the World Cup. The renovated stadium reopened in February 2014, with a new roof to cover the stands and help protect the supporters from any rain or heat being the biggest change to the stadium, and the home side Internacional will celebrate the reopening with a match against Penarol of Uruguay at the start of April. The record attendance at the stadium, pre-renovation, was 106,554 in June 1972 as the Brazilian national side played a friendly match against the Rio Grande do Sul All Stars that ended 3-3. Following renovations the capacity of the stadium is 51,300 with a further 5,000 VIP seats that will be converted into regular seats for Internacional following the end of the World Cup to give them a 56,000 seater stadium for their home games. The stadium is also known as Gigante da Boa Vista as well as Estádio Castelão. The ground is owned by the Ceará state government and homes two clubs, Ceará Sporting Club and Fortaleza Esporte Clube who play in Serié B and Serié C respectively. The stadium is well used and has been open since late 1973, but has been recently refurbished. The changes and updates to the stadium were begun in 2002 and finished a decade later in time for the stadium to host three matches at the 2013 Confederations Cup. The Estádio Castelão saw Brazil beat Mexico 2-0 last summer, and on June 17th will host a repeat of that match, as well seeing Spain beat Nigeria 3-0 in the group stage and the Spain v Italy Semi Final that needed a thrilling penalty shootout for the sides to be separated. Home World Cup News World Cup Teams Match Schedule World Cup Groups World Cup Knockout Stage Officially known as the Estádio Governador Magalhães Pinto, the Estádio Mineirão is the largest football stadium in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. It was built in 1965 and after being a vital part of the 2013 Confederations Cup it will be integral to both the upcoming World Cup this summer and the 2016 Olympics. Last summer’s Confederations Cup saw the stadium gain a reputation for matches with plenty of goals and attacking football as the three matches played resulted in 13 goals. Tahiti v Nigeria was the match that saw the most amount of goals with seven goals scored as the African side claimed a large 6-1 win and we’ll certainly be hoping that the Estádio Mineirão continues in this trend of producing goals this summer. In fact with all of the group matches played here seeing one of the group favourites facing a minnow team, there is a definite chance of this keeping up, resulting in the stadium being fondly remember after the tournament has been concluded. With the Confederations Cup, World Cup and Olympic Games in mind, the stadium was renovated to bring it up to FIFA standards in late 2012. Although the capacity of the stadium is now 62,170, the stadium has been known to hold much, much more than this. The record attendance at the Estádio Mineirão is 132,834 for the match of Cruzeiro v Villa Nova in the final match of the state league in 1997. Women and children were allowed in free, as was the style at the time in Brazil, for this match and the attendance was broken down to 74,857 paying fans and 56,618 women and children who watched the game for free and helped set this outstanding record. The capacity of the stadium was reduced to 72,000 under FIFA orders, but although we’ll only have half the amount of people in the stands for the World Cup this summer as that day in 1997 we’re sure that there will be just as exhilarating an atmosphere as the fans cheer on the World Cup sides! After being used for just a single match last summer, the stadium will feature much more prominently at this summer’s World Cup Finals with seven matches, including the clash of the defeated Semi Finalists, scheduled to play at the venue. The stadium was originally built in 1974 and was named after the Brazilian football legend Garrincha who won two World Cup Finals with the country in 1958 and 1962, including taking the Golden Ball and Golden Boot in the ’62 Finals for best player and top goal scorer as well as making the All Star Team. He was also named in the FIFA World Cup All Time Team in 1994. The Stadium was erected when Garrincha was 40 and it was Corinthians who claimed the first ever victory at the stadium with a 2-1 win over CEUB in March of 1974. The previous attendance record at the original stadium was 51,200, but this was beaten last summer when Brazil defeated Japan 3-0 in the Confederations Cup as 67,423 people watched from the stands.
