Workshop on Management of Student Services conducted by U.S. Fulbright Alumna Nancy
Sherman
On June 10-11, the Romanian-U.S. Fulbright Commission in collaboration with the Embassy of the
United States organized an event entitled Workshop for Improving the Romanian Higher Education
System. Development and Integration of Student Services. The event is the first in a series of three
workshops to address topics of interest for improving the Romanian higher education system, such as
Research Management, Management of the Internationalization of Campuses and Management of Stu-
dent Services.
The first workshop – dedicated to the Management of Student Services – was hosted by Babes-Bolyai
University in Cluj on June 10 and 11 and was designed to be attended by Provosts and other decision-
making university staff members, as well as representatives of the Romanian Ministry of Education.
The 2-day event included lectures on the topic and practical applications devised for the training of
these educational managers. The workshop was conducted by Dr. Nancy Sherman, Fulbright Alumna,
professor and clinical coordinator at Bradley University, IL and a highly experienced visiting lecturer
coming from the U.S., who shared knowledge and expertise about the practice of the fields in the
American universities, translated into a better curricula design and content of the academic programs
for training and improving the efficiency of academic management in Romania.
Now Open: Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship 2012
A new grant competition has just been opened this June. Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship is a very
generous program for mid-career professionals who have a proven track record of leadership, a public
service commitment, and the capacity to take full advantage of a self-defined program of independent
non degree study. The Romanian applicants are invited to submit applications no later than August 28,
2011. Click here for details.
Now Open: Fulbright Senior Award 2012-2013
Fulbright Senior Award is a very generous program for Romanian professors, re-
searchers and professionals who have a doctoral degree or equivalent. Grants are
available for conducting research and/or lecturing in the U.S. institutions. The Ro-
manian applicants are invited to submit applications no later than November 7,

Interview with Romanian Fulbright Scholar Chris Tanasescu
Chris Tanasescu, Fulbright Scholar in 2010-2011 at San Diego University is featured in
an interview about poetry, creative writing and his experience in U.S. Chris is a poet,
translator and member of a multimedia poetry performance band entitled Margento.
The interview followed Chris’s performance during the successful event entitled Nights
in White Satin Poetry Reading in Bucharest.

New Issue of the Journal for the Study of Religions and Ideologies Magazine edited by Ro-

Sandu Frunza, Romanian Fulbright alumnus in 2007-2008 and a professor in the Political Science De-
partment at Babes-Bolyai University is the editor of a peer-review academic publication intended for
professors and researchers interested in the study of religions and ideologies. The publication entitled
Journal for the Study of Religions and Ideologies (JSRI) is an international online publication, with
three issues per year. Michael Jones, U.S. Fulbright alumnus to Romania and professor at Liberty Uni-

Collaboration between U.S. Fulbright Grantee Jake Shulman-Ment and Romanian Fulbright
Alumna Mariana Nicolae
On June 21, U.S. Fulbright grantee Jake Shulman-Ment & Basarabish performed a Klezmer concert at
Curtea de Arges Museum. On the same day, Jake also held a workshop about folk and Jewish music, but
also about his Fulbright experience in Romania. The event was organized by the Romanian-U.S. Ful-
bright Commission, English-Speaking Union-Romania and Curtea de Arges Museum. Jake collaborated
with Dr. Mariana Nicolae, Romanian Fulbright alumna and founding member of the English-Speaking Un-
ion-Romania in organizing the event.
Romanian Poetry Anthology by U.S. Fulbright Alumnus Martin Woodside
Martin Woodside, U.S. Fulbright alumnus in 2009-2010 published a book entitled
Of Gentle Wolves: An Anthology of Romanian Poetry. Martin’s translations of Ro-
manian poetry, borne largely out of his Fulbright time in Romania, includes au-
thors like Marin Sorescu, Gellu Naum, Constantin Acosmei, Radu Vancu, Angela
Marinescu, Dan Coman, Ioan Moldovan, O. Nimigean, Robert Şerban, Leonid Di-
mov, Gabriel Decuble, Ana Blandiana, Chris Tanasescu, Nicolae Coande.
The book is published by Calypso Editions and aims to bring the very best of the
country’s contemporary poets together in a single volume.

U.S. Fulbrighter Laura Mattes at TEDx Youth Bucharest
Laura Iris Mattes, U.S. Fulbright grantee to Romania was invited at TEDx Youth Bucha-
rest to talk about her work in Romania related with the public health sector, gender,
sexuality and HIV/AIDS discrimination.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDxYouth Bucharest is Romania’s first TEDx
conference where all presenters and attendees are youth age 30 and younger.

U.S. Fulbright Alumnus Vincent Liotta at Jeunesses Musicales Romania Grand Opera Gala
Young Artists for Excellency
Vincent Liotta, U.S. Fulbright alumnus to Romania in 2002-2003, inde-
pendent stage director and professor at Indiana University Jacobs
School of Music, Bloomington, returned to Romania and together with
Viorica Cortez was the leader of the Jeunesses Musicales Romania Grand
Opera Gala Young Artists for Excellency. The event was dedicated to
young artists, students and graduates of the Academies of Music and to
the young actors and opera stage directors from all over the world. It
included masterclasses dedicated to young opera singers and was com-
pleted by a public gala concert of the Romanian Center of Excellence in
Opera, with participation of Bucharest Symphonic Pops Orchestra, directed by Iurie Florea. Also, the
project was administered under the leadership of Mihaela Bogdan(2004-2005), a Romanian Fulbrighter
in 2004-2005 who studied at Indiana University with Vincent Liotta.

Concert Performed by U.S. Fulbright Grantee Jake Shulman-Ment at Klezmer & More Festival
in Bucharest
Jake Shulman-Ment, Fulbright Student grantee in Ethnomusicology in Romania, has brought together a
group of musicians from the Republic of Moldova and the U.S. who are having a series of concerts in
several Romanian cities.
On Sunday, June 19 Jake Shulman-Ment and his group entiled “Basarabish” performed during the Klez-
mer & More Festival in Bucharest at Green Hours jazz-café. The Basarabish group includes: Jacob Shul-
man-Ment (USA) – violin, Benjamin Fox-Rosen (USA) - bass, guitar, Efim Chorny (Republic of Moldova)
– vocals, Suzanna Ghergus (Republic of Moldova) – piano and Adrian Receanu (Republic of Moldova) –
clarinet.
