BYOD Strategy for Education Q&A
Olly Bray
Ollybray.com
1 to 1 = BYOD?
1 to 1 needs BYOD?
What do you think?
Bring your own device (BYOD) refers to technology
models where students bring a personally owned
device to school for the purpose of learning.
A personally owned device is any technology device
brought into the school and owned by a student (or the
student’s family), staff or guests.
BYOD solves world peace?
“Every turned off device is a turned off child”
Prof Stephen Heppell, University of Bournmouth – www.heppell.net
3 BYOD impacts areas:
1. Increase number of devices that can be used for
learning
2. Avoid unnecessary expenditure and re-direct to
other areas of ICT need
3. Avoid duplication or more of devices, increasing
usage
BYOD – What matters?
Three main reasons to look at BYOD:
1. Student Familiarity
2. Bridge between formal and informal learning
3. Cost and sustainability
1. What device strategy/policy is right for you
2. Funding models
3. School Policies
4. What digital content is to be accessed
5. Security models
6. Infrastructure
7. Innovative Teaching & Learning
BYOD - What device strategy/policy is right for you?
Standardisation
• What matters are devices that are Internet ready, alternatively you could insist
on everyone bringing the same device….hmmm
Usage & Flexibility
• Laptops, Netbooks, Smartphones, Tablets, Hybrid Computers, even Windows to-
Go all count! How do you want Students to use these devices?
• BYOB (Bring your own browser) – Prof. Stephen Heppell likes this.
Management
• How will I control what students can/can’t do?
• How will you manage the devices; security, apps, theft, etc
BYOD - Funding Models
Remember, not all students will have access to a device!
Some Funding models:
• School out-right device purchase
• School subsidises device purchase - i.e. 25% of cost. Student
ownership can help with how long the device will last!
• Leasing devices - In some cases devices can be owned at the end of
the term; this may not be that interesting though
• Free for-all – Students bring what they want, so long as they meet
school standards, etc. Worth noting additional insurance to cover
devices whilst in school!
How will you fund your BYOD program?

Policies
Ownership & Insurance
• School purchased, how do you transfer ownership to the student/parent?
Owned or not, devices will need some insurance for in and out of the
classroom.
• Engage parents to ensure ownership & responsibilities are clearly understood.
Responsible Use
• Re-visit ICT usage policies, BYOD will change things, i.e. use of Social Media.
• Engage students in developing “Usage” policies helps buy-in.
• Don’t forget to include BYOD in your Teaching and Learning policy too!
Equality of Access
• Every student needs access to a device, you need to provide this. Device
library perhaps.
Teacher professional development
• Create a policy for continuous teacher professional development
• Technical & Pedagogical. Encourage staff to share ideas.

Digital content
“Imagine a world in which every single
person on the planet is given free access
to the sum of all human knowledge.”
Jimmy Wales, founder, Wikipedia
Access to Digital content is key to any BYOD strategy
Accessibility
• Screen size & magnification support
• Flash content support
• Viewing & editing documents
• Windows 8 accessibility features – www.windows.com/enable
Licensing
• Access to digital content in and out of the classroom
• Cloud enabled content works well – cross/multi-device support
• Copyright cleared – Creative Commons, http://creativecommons.org/
• Tie student copyright responsibilities to Fare Use policies
Privacy
• Where is your data held?
• How will you safeguard student data?
• Office 365 Data/Security Status - http://office.microsoft.com/en-gb/business/office-365-
security-and-privacy-verified-by-a-third-party-FX103089231.aspx
Infrastructure
“There is no doubt that, for this next decade and
beyond, broadband infrastructure will be as
relevant to economic progress as roads and
transportation, including effective rail and air links”.
- John F McClelland C.B.E.
Many BYOD and other 1:1 learning projects failed because, although the
devices have been put in place, the bandwidth and infrastructure have not
been adequate to support them!
Key questions – Alberta Education (BYOD Guide -
http://education.alberta.ca/media/6749210/byod%20guide%20revised%202012-09-05.pdf
• Students/Teachers likely require multiple logins/devices!
• Current wireless capacity/configuration?
• Number of devices supported?
• Can you manage centrally?
• Bandwidth gaps for wired vs wireless, how do you close the gap?
• Growth rates?
• How will you re-charge personally owned devices?
• Should students be allowed to use 4G/3G networks?
Security
• Procedures for lost or stolen student-owned devices?
• Encryption, Anti-virus/malware, mobile device management & identity
management

Conclusion
For BYOD to be successful, permission for students to bring in their own devices is not enough (although
it is a good start!).
Leadership
• Vision & passion to improve education with technology and the will to affect change!
Shared Vision
• A lone vision can be revolutionary, a shared vision can be transformational – Head Teachers,
Teachers, Governors, Students & wider communities (Parents too)
Pedagogy
• Teaching & Learning should look very different in a BYOD or 1 to 1 environment, if not….check your
strategy!
Teacher professional development
• Ensuring teachers embrace new methods and apply to teaching and learning in/out of the classroom
Responsible Use Policies
• Social media, Teaching and Learning and engage students in policy development
Infrastructure
• You may have the devices, but do they work effectively on your network?
Digital Content
• Licensing, copyright, infrastructure impact, and data privacy
Finally, no large-scale technology project is the same. Only through the sharing of good and interesting
practice with others can we learn to transform teaching and learning forever!

Frog 13 - Microsoft - Innovative teaching and learning with BYOD

  • 3. Agenda Welcome & Introduction Innovative Teaching & Leaning BYOD Strategy for Education Q&A
  • 5. 1 to 1 = BYOD? 1 to 1 needs BYOD? What do you think? Bring your own device (BYOD) refers to technology models where students bring a personally owned device to school for the purpose of learning. A personally owned device is any technology device brought into the school and owned by a student (or the student’s family), staff or guests. BYOD solves world peace?
  • 6. “Every turned off device is a turned off child” Prof Stephen Heppell, University of Bournmouth – www.heppell.net 3 BYOD impacts areas: 1. Increase number of devices that can be used for learning 2. Avoid unnecessary expenditure and re-direct to other areas of ICT need 3. Avoid duplication or more of devices, increasing usage
  • 7. BYOD – What matters? Three main reasons to look at BYOD: 1. Student Familiarity 2. Bridge between formal and informal learning 3. Cost and sustainability 1. What device strategy/policy is right for you 2. Funding models 3. School Policies 4. What digital content is to be accessed 5. Security models 6. Infrastructure 7. Innovative Teaching & Learning
  • 8. BYOD - What device strategy/policy is right for you? Standardisation • What matters are devices that are Internet ready, alternatively you could insist on everyone bringing the same device….hmmm Usage & Flexibility • Laptops, Netbooks, Smartphones, Tablets, Hybrid Computers, even Windows to- Go all count! How do you want Students to use these devices? • BYOB (Bring your own browser) – Prof. Stephen Heppell likes this. Management • How will I control what students can/can’t do? • How will you manage the devices; security, apps, theft, etc
  • 9. BYOD - Funding Models Remember, not all students will have access to a device! Some Funding models: • School out-right device purchase • School subsidises device purchase - i.e. 25% of cost. Student ownership can help with how long the device will last! • Leasing devices - In some cases devices can be owned at the end of the term; this may not be that interesting though • Free for-all – Students bring what they want, so long as they meet school standards, etc. Worth noting additional insurance to cover devices whilst in school! How will you fund your BYOD program?

  • 14. Policies Ownership & Insurance • School purchased, how do you transfer ownership to the student/parent? Owned or not, devices will need some insurance for in and out of the classroom. • Engage parents to ensure ownership & responsibilities are clearly understood. Responsible Use • Re-visit ICT usage policies, BYOD will change things, i.e. use of Social Media. • Engage students in developing “Usage” policies helps buy-in. • Don’t forget to include BYOD in your Teaching and Learning policy too! Equality of Access • Every student needs access to a device, you need to provide this. Device library perhaps. Teacher professional development • Create a policy for continuous teacher professional development • Technical & Pedagogical. Encourage staff to share ideas. www.pil-network.com
  • 15. Digital content “Imagine a world in which every single person on the planet is given free access to the sum of all human knowledge.” Jimmy Wales, founder, Wikipedia Access to Digital content is key to any BYOD strategy Accessibility • Screen size & magnification support • Flash content support • Viewing & editing documents • Windows 8 accessibility features – www.windows.com/enable Licensing • Access to digital content in and out of the classroom • Cloud enabled content works well – cross/multi-device support • Copyright cleared – Creative Commons, http://creativecommons.org/ • Tie student copyright responsibilities to Fare Use policies Privacy • Where is your data held? • How will you safeguard student data? • Office 365 Data/Security Status - http://office.microsoft.com/en-gb/business/office-365- security-and-privacy-verified-by-a-third-party-FX103089231.aspx
  • 16. Infrastructure “There is no doubt that, for this next decade and beyond, broadband infrastructure will be as relevant to economic progress as roads and transportation, including effective rail and air links”. - John F McClelland C.B.E. Many BYOD and other 1:1 learning projects failed because, although the devices have been put in place, the bandwidth and infrastructure have not been adequate to support them! Key questions – Alberta Education (BYOD Guide - http://education.alberta.ca/media/6749210/byod%20guide%20revised%202012-09-05.pdf • Students/Teachers likely require multiple logins/devices! Security • Procedures for lost or stolen student-owned devices? • Encryption, Anti-virus/malware, mobile device management & identity management • Consortium of Schools Networking - http://www.cosn.org/Home/tabid/2516/Default.aspx

  • 20. Make the most out of your Office 365 environment > Smarter learning is all about giving educators the freedom to teach, and students the freedom to learn. Office 365 empowers educators and students to work together in new ways, when boundaries no longer exist.
  • 21. Assessment for Learning Flipped Learning Teaching & Learning 21st Century Learning Anytime, Anywhere Learning
  • 22. How can SharePoint Online be used for ANYTIME, ANYWHERE LEARNING: 1. Customised Project & Topic online classrooms 2. Flipped Classroom / Homework 3. Teacher & Peer Assessment 4. Assessment for Learning 5. Making the most of newsfeed 6. Starter and Plenaries 7. Differentiated Learning Resources 8. Teacher & Student blogs 9. Group work and Collaboration 10. SkyDrive and Office Webs Apps
  • 24. SUPPORT: Professional Development with Microsoft Windows in the Classroom Certified Teacher Trainer Microsoft Innovative Teacher Teaching with Technology Hot Topics/ Social Media Office 365 Windows 8 Learning Suite Touch Develop Yammer Win8 Apps Dream Spark Lync to Skype
  • 28. Conclusion For BYOD to be successful, permission for students to bring in their own devices is not enough (although it is a good start!). Leadership • Vision & passion to improve education with technology and the will to affect change! Shared Vision • A lone vision can be revolutionary, a shared vision can be transformational – Head Teachers, Teachers, Governors, Students & wider communities (Parents too) Pedagogy • Teaching & Learning should look very different in a BYOD or 1 to 1 environment, if not….check your strategy! Teacher professional development • Ensuring teachers embrace new methods and apply to teaching and learning in/out of the classroom Responsible Use Policies • Social media, Teaching and Learning and engage students in policy development Infrastructure • You may have the devices, but do they work effectively on your network? Digital Content • Licensing, copyright, infrastructure impact, and data privacy Finally, no large-scale technology project is the same. Only through the sharing of good and interesting practice with others can we learn to transform teaching and learning forever! www.pil-network.com
