FATIMA – A NEW EUROPEAN PROJECT ON FIGHTING VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN, - HAS BEEN LAUNCHED IN SWEDEN
FATIMA - a new European project on fighting violence against women, - has been launched in Sweden by the Department of International cooperation of Folkuniversitetet Uppsala. The project is co-funded by European Commission and has the full name of “FATIMA - Preventing Honour Related Violence by education and dialogue through Immigrant NGOs”.
The project aims at preventing violence linked to so-called harmful practices (e.g. female genital mutilation, forced or early marriage or forced sexual relationships, honour crimes) committed against women, young people and children through education and awareness rising on European Conventions on Human Rights, Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence, UN Con vention on the Rights of the Child and UN Convention on Elimination of all forms of discrimination against Women motivating to behavioural changes.
The specific objective of the project is to increase the capacity within immigrant NGOs for carrying out awareness rising and educational campaign for establishing social dialogue concerning HRV.
“The training material and empowerment of immigrant NGOs have per definition a European solution to a European problem. Once the training materials are translated into the 8 languages of immigrant NGOs and languages of partner organisations, they can be used all over Europe”, - says Yevgeniya Averhed, the project manager of FATIMA and deputy director of the Department for International Cooperation of Folkuniversitetet.
The project has duration of 24 months and will be completed in October 2016. The FATIMA Consortium consists of partners from Sweden, Greece, Portugal, and UK. The first transnational meeting will be held in Athens, Greece, on 04.12.2014 – 05.12.2014.
