  1. Good Afternoon! .....Welcome and thank you for coming to .....I am ….. An Architect … My topic for today is …..Anyone here have used, tried, or heard something about BIM?....
  2. BIM is also associated with Parametric Modeling, a characteristic wherein models are built from a set of mathematical equations. These may be standard equations found in reference books, proprietary equations developed by consultants or vendors, or some combination of the two.Project parameters or variables can be modified during the project simulation process Parametric Modeling uses parametric constraints to define and easily modify part features, and to create relationships between these features in order to create intelligent part models. These virtual parts can then be combined to form assembly models.Show sample of WC parameters…Model features mimic actual design & manufacturing features A parameter is a named quantity whose value can be changed = Parametric dimensions-A constraint is a mathematical requirement placed on the geometry of a 3D model Kinds of part constraints: -Dimensional – limits feature size -Geometric – limits feature shape (e.g., parallelism tangency, colinearity)-Assembly constraints
  3. Characteristics of Parametric Modeling-Model flexibility; easy to update, modify-Reflects design intent (i.e., the purpose or function of a feature)-Model history viewable in feature tree (similar to CSG)-Drawings generated from parametric model are linked to model  associative-Relationships between parts are maintained in database  assembly modelingWith this characteristics, imagine how this will affect all professionals involved in a project. Being an object based and parametric modeling, BIM enables a virtual information model to be handed from the design team (architects, surveyors, civil, structural and building services engineers, etc.) to the main contractor and subcontractors and then on to the owner/operator; each professional adds discipline-specific data to the single shared model at each every steps of the project. This reduces information losses that traditionally occurred when a new team takes 'ownership' of the project, and provides more extensive information to owners of complex structures.
  4. With state-of-the-art parametric building modeling, BIM software works on multiple views so that we can coordinate a change made anywhere, including on sheets ready to plot, everywhere it matters: in 3D views and drawing sheets, schedules and elevations, sections and plans.Because of this “Live Design” working environment - BIM streamlines the design process and creates opportunities for earlier design concepts, earlier decision making and better documentation
  5. Another Benefits of BIM is that it effectively promotes Advance Coordination.Because its “Live Design” we can efficiently design and accommodate changes by shifting back its effort during detailed design phase.Architects and engineers and even contractors are able to make changes in real time and engineers in the different disciplines can work on models simultaneously.
  6. A BIM typical platform software offers this kind of collaboration…This benefits promotes a more collaborative team wherein all participants become aware of each other’s constraints and dependency.Since only a single source of all primary geometry and data is accessed by trades at the same time. There is no need for constant exchange of drawings and overlapping exercise to trace changes.
  7. With the use of coordinationsoftwares, BIM can help track design clashes and other discrepancies during design stages and subsequently prevent costly change orders during construction.
  8. Being able to do virtual coordination on the computer first will make installation a lot easier. This way, issues are first resolved virtually rather than in the field that would slow the project down. With BIM, savings are experienced with fewer change orders and Request For Information (RFIs) during constructions.
  9. Another main advantage of (BIM) is the compatibility and interoperability that it offers through technology which facilitates ease in exchange of information. This is most essential in the building process as information travels through various hands to essentially get compiled in one single database. Information travels from concept design by an Architect to localized Structural and MEP consultants to specialized landscape and Lighting consultants and then back to the architect who further sends them to the site; the possibility of data getting lost is tremendous. BIM fosters this exchange in digital formats with ease and efficiency through software solutions. Software developers and others are busily at work attempting to enable information interchange among the myriad of software programsinteroperability between various software applications can be achieved in a number of ways. Three of the most common are: Using software that directly reads the proprietary file format contained in the BIM software application. This may be the case for a suite of software applications developed by one software vendor. Using software that incorporates an Application Programming Interface (API), providing (at least in theory) a well-developed interface between software from different providers. Using software that supports data exchange standards having industry-wide acceptance. The steel industry’s CIMSteel Integration Standards (CIS/2) is an example of a successful application of a data exchange standard. The Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) are intended to provide a neutral model framework that will integrate a variety of design and construction management software into a Building Information Model. Work continues on developing a CIS/2 to IFC translator, which should greatly enhance data exchange within the steel segment of the BIM environment. All of these methods of data exchange are currently being used, with varying degrees of success.
  10. BIM fosters this exchange in digital formats with ease and efficiency through three dimensional CAD software solutions.
  11. Documentation While the layout (3D development) may take longer to generate, the documentation portion is extremely efficient. As information is being added to the model in one location, all the views associated with that location are updated in real time.Parametric building model can provide the immediate and fully coordinated set of accurate and reliable conventional documents. A BIM solution that can coordinate changes and maintain consistency at all times lets users focus on building design versus change management. This built-in change-management capability is critical to the disconnected building process - which is still heavily dependent on construction documentation - Providing confidence in drawing deliverables. BIM FOR LEED CREDITS...The Concept is a "platform that allows you to predict the behavior of your building before you construct it, via a convergence of modeling, analysis, and sustainable validation into an improved design process.“(BIM) software capable of calculating real-time energy and water use levels, for exampleFor example, if the design team knows how sophisticated its daylighting system is, thanks to data generated by the next-generation software, the decision can more accurately be made to utilize fewer fixtures. Similarly, the team can track the trade-off between LEED daylighting and energy credits by experimenting with different shading devices and glazing systems on the building model. Or by tracking the efficiency of the building envelope, the HVAC system can then be accurately downsized and the baseboard heating system eliminated. "Such a building tool will allow the user to quickly understand the complete interdependence between different systems and the environment,"
  12. Documentation Any BIM user in here will agree that while the layout (3D development) may take longer to generate, the documentation portion is extremely efficient. As information is being added to the model in one location, all the views associated with that location are updated in real time.Because it is parametric a building, model can provide the immediate and fully coordinated set of accurate and reliable conventional documents. With this solution we can coordinate changes and maintain consistency at all times and let us focus on building design instead of aloting more time in managing changes/revisions. This built-in change-management capability is critical to the disconnected building process and provides confidence in drawing deliverables.
  13. "Such a building tool will allow the user to quickly understand the complete interdependence between different systems and the environment," Using BIM on BERDE/LEED projects reside in its information richness that is desirable to tackle the challenges posed by itscertification, meeting the credit compliance and generating the documentation required in certification review.Numerous LEED credits can be reported and calculated directly from the BIM authoring environment, allowing for coordination of the most current project information. In collaboration with various leading technology companies, USGBC has developed a new program aimed at streamlining and creating capacity for the LEED building certification process. By integrating third-party applications with LEED Online, LEED Automation will serve three key functions:“Provide automation of various LEED documentation processes”“Deliver customers a unified view of their LEED projects”“Standardize LEED content and distribute it consistently across multiple technology platforms”
