As most of the hospitals in Scandinavia were built in the 1960s and 1970s they are now becoming outdated and logistically inefficient. In Denmark, there are more than 40 hospital projects which involve renovating old hospitals or constructing new ones and the total amount being invested is approximately EUR 6.7 billion. Some 20% of this sum will probably be used in acquiring new technology. Five new super hospitals are to be built in Denmark in the next five years, each of them specializing in specific fields of treatment and offering the very best care available.

The New North Zealand Hospital will serve as an acute district
hospital, providing short-term medical and surgical treatment and
care for North Zealand’s 312,000 citizens. Construction of the new
hospital, which is to be built on a greenfield site near the town of
Hillerød, will proceed in parallel with
the development of a new urban
district. Building work will begin in
2017 and the hospital is scheduled to
open its doors to patients in 2020.
The total investment in this project
is estimated to be EUR 510 million.
The new facility will have a floor area
of 124,000 m² and all its 662 beds
will be in single-patient rooms. Three
design teams have been selected to
participate in the second phase of
the competition to supply the new
hospital design, the final winner will
be selected in March 2014.
The New Odense University Hospital (New OUH) will have the
University of Southern Denmark and Science Park Odense as its
immediate neighbors. Construction will start in 2015 and the new
hospital will be completed in 2021. The estimated investment in this
project is EUR 920 million. New OUH will have a total floor area of
780,000m², 714 somatic medical beds and 139 psychiatric beds, and
will eventually replace the existing Odense
University Hospital. According to the
project developer, building a new university
hospital will enable substantial streamlining
of operations through the provision
of optimal logistics, new technological
solutions and new, more-efficient
procedures.
New neurorehabilitation facilities to serve
the whole of Denmark’s capital region are
to be built in association with Glostrup
University Hospital. Construction will begin
in 2016 and the new facilities - total floor
