New Companion Planting App Offers Crop-Boosting Advice
Published on 12/03/11
Independent developer Fiona Alcorn today introduces Companion Planting 1.0, her new
gardening app for iOS. Perfect for planning vegetable plots for optimal yield, Companion
Planting allows gardeners to search for the vegetable of their choice, see a list of its
companions and plant enemies, and add it to their 'plant list' if they decide to grow it.
The app offers a set of guidelines which most gardeners should find helpful & is an
indispensable aid for busy 'grow-your-own' vegetable gardeners.
Glasgow, Scotland - Companion Planting, a newly created mobile app for iPhone, iPod touch
and iPad, was today officially launched. The Companion Planting app allows gardeners to
search for the vegetable of their choice, see a list of its companions and plant enemies,
and add it to their 'plant list' if they decide to grow it.
App developer Fiona Alcorn reckons that using the Companion Planting app will help
vegetable gardeners avoid common mistakes.
"Simply planting something in the wrong place can lead to reduced quality, size or taste
of the crop," said Fiona. "However with the new 'Companion Planting' app in your hands,
you can plan vegetable plots for optimal yield in a few moments."
Companion Planting has been practised for centuries and, according to Fiona who is also a
home vegetable gardener, it makes the most of nature's own pest controls, and is now
widely used in organic gardening. Noting that plants have varying resistance and
susceptibility to pests and diseases, Fiona said they also have differing requirements for
water, shade and nutrients.
"A vegetable's willingness to grow well alongside another is not set in stone, and varies
from location to location and from one climate to another, but this app is a set of
guidelines which most gardeners should find helpful," she added. "In this time of
austerity," she contended, "many people are turning to the garden as a way to grow the
family's food and save some money. Organic gardeners will also find that their crops are
naturally healthier. It will save a whole lot of time, and help gardeners on the way to
bumper crops next year."
As far as Fiona is aware, the Companion Planting app is the only one of its kind currently
available on the App Store offering this kind of companion planting information and
functionality.
"Having chosen all the plants they would like to grow in the vegetable garden, they can
then ask the app to arrange the plants into plots, making sure that incompatible plants
are never together, and maximizing growth potential by putting companions together where
possible," explained Fiona, claiming the new app is an indispensable aid for busy
'grow-your-own' vegetable gardeners. "Altogether this is quick and easy, and can save a
vegetable gardener hours of planning. Not only is it valuable information at the
fingertips, but it actually does the arranging for you, saving time and effort. Plots can
be named and saved for future reference, and changed around if desired," Fiona concluded.
