Kew Gardens & MediaStore Case Study
1 Challenge
Responsible for the world’s largest collection of living plants Kew Royal Botanic
Gardens approached ECS with a need to deliver a CollectionsManagement solution.
The solution needed to enable the ability to import, catalogue and publicly present
their vast digital archives.
To get a scale of the sheer volume of digital assets this solution would need to
incorporate: Kew’s living collections include more than 30,000 different kinds of
plants, while the herbarium, which is one of the largest in the world, has over seven
million preserved plant specimens. The library contains more than 750,000 volumes,
and the illustrations collection contains more than 175,000 prints and drawings of
plants.
2 Solution
To meet the client’s requirements, ECS deployed their MediaStore solution.
MediaStore acts as a centrally located repository for digital assets that provides an
easy ability to update, search, download, track and share images with employees,
customers and suppliers.
The application is based on Oracle WebCenter which provides beneficial underlying
features such as security, version control and content conversion. MediaStore
provides a rich user interface with advanced features to enable true enterprise media
management for the client.

website, which produced a variety of renditions for
each image uploaded.

3 Outcome
MediaStore was deployed to enable bulk uploading and cataloguing of digital
archives, which were routed through workflow and eventually exposed to users of
their public facing site. Users were also able to search the public archives based on
the metadata entered during upload.
ECS was quickly able to model Kew’s metadata requirements in MediaStore, and
enabled contributors to index, update, search by, and view metadata for their entire
digital catalogue.
The Asset Information screen of MediaStore
was altered for Kew to provide workflow
status information and links to pages
containing the asset.
