Hotel guests and travel consumers in general are already mobile-ready, and hoteliers and travel suppliers have to respond adequately to this growing demand for mobile travel services. Goggle reported back in October of 2010 that year-over-year mobile searches for hotels had increased by a staggering 7,000%. Industry experts project that the mobile Web will surpass the traditional web in size by 2013. Hotels do not need a mobile app if they are single property, independent and franchised hotels and resorts or smaller and mid-size hotel chains and multi-property companies. These hotel companies are better off focusing on building and enhancing their mobile websites and promoting the mobile site via mobile marketing initiatives.

And in May 2010, Deloitte carried out a survey that showed 10 per cent of the respondents admitted to using a hotel application on a mobile device to book rooms, view reservations or pay a bill. Mobile web and applications have become the new mandate for the travel and leisure industry, especially for those brands that are keen to explore ways of using the connectivity of mobile to stay in touch with consumers at every point in the travel purchase lifecycle and operate more efficiently. THE smartphone can be a nearly perfect travel companion, a chum that is helpful, entertaining and knowledgeable, does not complain and, incidentally, fits in your pocket. It allows you to buy tickets and document a trip, will warn you of flight delays and almost always knows where you are and how to get where you're supposed to be.
