National Grocers Association—Worldwide demand for vitamins and dietary supplements is
increasing at a steady speed. According to Euromonitor global sales grew to $84.26 billion in
2011, up 6.1% from $79.43 billion in 2010. And with greater attention to personal health this
trend is continued to increase at a steady rate.
According to a Nutritional Supplements Market Report by kKncept Analytics, the US was the
largest market for dietary supplements in 2010. As health consciousness Americans and people
worldwide are becoming savy to the fact that many fruits and vegetables that are genetically bred
to improve visual appeal and crop yields, do not have the nutritional value that they used to.
Current commercial agriculture techniques leave soil deficient in important minerals, causing the
food grown in this soil to share the same mineral deficiencies.
Many foods are shipped long distances and are stored for long periods of time, both of which
cause the depletion of vitamins in these foods, including the important B-complex and C
vitamins. Increasing levels of environmental pollution in our air, water and food may cause our
bodies to use more nutrients than normal to detoxify and eliminate harmful substances. This is
especially true of the antioxidant vitamins, such as vitamins A, C, and E.
The growth in the sales was primarily due to growing usage of nutritional supplements
specifically among the aging American population.
The National Grocers Association take notice—in the US, specialty stores posted stronger results
compared to other distribution channels of dietary supplements. As health consciousness and
disposable income are growing on a global basis, the worldwide nutritional supplement industry
is expected to enjoy a significant growth rate in the near future.
According to CRN’s 2012 annual report Americans are the world’s #1 consumer of dietary
supplements with sixty-eight percent of American adults taking a dietary supplement. This
creates a huge opportunity for mass-market retail channels such as supermarkets and drug stores
to generate incremental volume and profits from the sale of dietary supplements.
