Amazon claims 3 times bigger sales during Diwali season, says better than Flipkart
Amazon India has claimed that it got the best response from consumers during the Diwali season sales. It
said that the total sales in October were almost 3 times (2.7) more than the number of things sold during
the same festive month in 2015.
Thought Corner
According to research firm RedSeer,e-commerce companies are expected to register transactions worth
Rs 11,000-13,000 crore ($1.7-1.9 billion) in October, driven by festive offers and discounts on their
platforms. The combined sales of all the top three e-commerce entities – Flipkart, Amazon and Snapdeal -
during last month's first week sale was valued at around Rs 6,500 crore,up 20 percent over the previous
year, according a report in Financial Express.
Amazon’s claim
Inspired by the overwhelming response from online customers during the festive season sales held last
month, Amazon asserts that its total sales in October were three times more than sales seen in the same
month of festival sale in the previous year.

However Amazon India did not provide a data comparison of sales figures of the same month in both the
years.
Heavy investments by Amazon
"We have already committed at least $5 billion to the India business and that's just the beginning,"
Amazon India country head Amit Agarwalsaid. "This is very early for e-commerce in India," ET reported
quoting Amazon India country head Amit Agarwal. Even as the US major continues to bet big on India's
e-commerce market, the Seattle-headquartered firm last week suffered a record $541 million loss in its
international business in the September quarter, thanks to its burgeoning expenses in the India business.
Better than Flipkart?
"Even if the numbers given (by Flipkart) in the first wave were true, then in the worst case we have
caught up (with it) in three years and are growing at 2.7 times as compared to last year," the report added
quoting Amit Agarwal, Amazon India Head.
When it comes to desktop and mobile visits, Amazon said that during the Dussera sales which lasted for
five days in the first week of October,it was consistently leading Flipkart. According to Amazon, the
consumer desktop visits were 1122 percent more than that of Flipkart. It said that the mobile site visits
were 40 percent to 58 percent more than that of Flipkart, according to SimilarWeb, a web analytics firm.
Amazon app downloads were also 16-72 percent more than Flipkart, according to App Annie, a platform
which tracks apps.
What numbers say?
There is ambiguity about who is on the top of this game but nevertheless Flipkart already has a larger
number of apps downloaded. Amazon crossed the 5 crore mark of app downloads on Google Play Store
last month, while Flipkart’s downloaded app numbers stands around 8 crores. Since a large percent of
purchase happens on apps, Flipkart might have seen larger sales figures, even though Amazon is not far
behind. Amazon said it sold around 15 million items while Flipkart stated to have sold a little bigger 15.5
crore units.

Conclusion
While the news suggests neck-to-neck competition between Amazon and Flipkart, we got to know
whether Amazon finally outstripped Flipkart. Was there a three times increase in sale for Amazon or is it
playing a psychological gimmick?
