Creativo e in piedi
articoli on e off line.Tutte le idee devono devono essere
messe in atto per divenire realtà però. Ci sono start up
problema.
Back in February 2013, Silicon Valley strategist Nilofer Merchant had her big moment
on the stage at the TED Talks. She spoke for ten minutes about holding meetings while
standing and arriving at turning points while walking. Such opportunities, according
to her premise, allow not only for better communication but for more creative solutions
as well. Nilofer, a Silicon Valley corporate strategist, division leader, formerly CEO and
board member of a NASDAQ-traded company, warned “What you’re doing right now, this
very moment, is killing you,” she told the thousands of TED attendees seated in the Long
Beach Convention Center,“Sitting is so incredibly accepted that we don’t even question
it. Sitting has become a passive dependence, just like smoking is for our generation”.
The thesis of Merchant is that people now sit for an average of 9.3 hours each day,
compared with sleeping an average of 7.7 hours daily. This growing inactivity is leading
to greater obesity and lower rates of creative thinking. So given that so many of us are
tied to our computers and desks, how can this be changed? For Merchant, walking
during meetings, standing whenever possible.“Instead of going to a coffee meeting
or a conference meeting, I ask people to go on a walking meeting,” said Merchant.
Aside from the health benefits, Merchant said walking instead of sitting also shifts
people’s thinking, hopefully allowing for different and more innovative thoughts to
emerge. “There’s something about getting out of the box that leads to out-of-the-box
thinking.”
After the TED Talk, Nilofer’s ideas spread around the world and in the media, from the
LA Times, to Oprah, to the Harvard Business Review, to Wired, and were discussed in
millions of articles on and off line. All ideas need to be put into action to be made into
reality. Startup entrepreneurs are building apps like Hot Seat gethotseatapp.com, and
companies are building high-functioning standing desks to be used in the standing
position. Walk-and-talk is a practical way to be more collaborative, increasing creativity,
and it may suggest a new solution to an old problem.
The Scrivinpiedi (writestanding) is the raised version of the
More table that makes coffee meetings and audio and video
conferences possible, resting on a surface elevated higher
than a normal table.
rende possibili coffee meetings e audio e video conference,
appoggiandosi a un piano elevato in altezza.

“Perché dare vita a The Inner Edge?
Buona lettura”.
“Why create The Inner Edge?
Creating a magazine like this, that looks at the history and current events of our
daily work, tracing the contemporary profile of furniture intended for professional
spaces, seemed to us the most spontaneous and direct way to analyse and
“record” the dialogue that we weave every day together with other specialists in
our field.
In these pages, organised like posters to pick and save, you will find long range
food for thought. The information they contain is tied to personal views, routes
and events that express our cultural, social and even economic times.
In The Inner Edge we tell a story that records our present and gives it back in a
format a bit more durable than a “tweet”, those posts or news that pile up during
our days and on our desktops.
Together with you we delve into the themes that give rise to new perspectives,
changing paths, identifying new goals:from environmental ethics to the
globalisation of economies, to styles and new behaviours. Even looking outside
our industry, we have those leaders, producers, opinion makers, designers,
and clients who testify to the sometimes notable sometimes, subtle, almost
imperceptible changes. We highlight merit, culture, good taste and excellence.
In these pages and in the digital version on-line you will find the constant
alternating of two fundamental aspects that we are immersed in every day
in doing our business:the convergence between the domestic world and
professional efficiency that is Estel’s DNA.That never ending correction of
materials, forms to file and define a broader meaning for objects that are not
restricted to one use rather than another.
Our containers speak of transversality and naturalness, the equipped walls, our
tables as well as padded and upholstered chairs. And The Inner Edge pages also
talk about these things.
Enjoy reading”.

Moleskine House, design GamFratesi, Oneoff project, Moleskine, 2012.
In its first issue, The Inner Edge looks at the ties between work and passions.
The desire for domesticity, the need to feel ‘at home’ in the workplace seems to be the
point where the vision of the contemporary man revolves around itself.
There is a new, open notion of human space, the one that includes the possibility for
our resources to be not predictable neither planned. Lines are comfortable and details
are softened (Naturally Estel), surfaces speak of materials and textures (MoodBoard),
the same piece of furniture can furnish an office or can be used as a kitchen table (the
Moor table). We indulge in the forms that the history of design has by now rendered
classic (Oscar Niemeyer) and we rediscover the value of comfortable elegance (Jorge Pensi).
There is no separation between life and job, between passions and obsessions,
neither at work nor at home. We have described the houses of the great architects
and new designers, listened to those who are used to decorating public spaces on the
5 continents (Stefano Angeletti for Spiralis), and witnessed to the high-speed lunch of
an architect trained to enhance the dimension of travel (Marco Casamonti). Perhaps it
is a consequence of those rules created by our society, so precise and perhaps too rigid
to allow us to ‘function’ properly. Public spaces are looking for something softer, more
human, more emotionally sustainable. Not surprisingly, many other public spaces that
are historically typed are also opening up to a more comfortable, domestic approach:
restaurants in apartments in the world’s great capitals, the hosting of Airbnb.com, the
home-schooling phenomenon, even the ‘new’ idea of giving birth in maternity homes.
Whenever our society creates stiff ‘containers’, someone tries to dismantle them
and bring them back to the variable. In The Inner Edge we talk about this softened
and intimate approach. Contained, as in Estel’s polite product lines. A courteous and
personal point of view that has learned to accept man in his totality.
Patrizia Coggiola
pianificabili e prevedibili.
More).
nascite in case maternità.
addolcita e intima. Ammansita, come nei cortesi profili dei
prodotti Estel.

More di Estel rivela l’equilibrata eleganza senza
riunioni o dirigenziale. La sua struttura permette di creare
complementi dallo stile altamente personalizzabile e
flessibile.
disponibili in diverse finiture, in laminato, verniciato,
laccato, vetro retrolaccato, essenza o cuoio, così come la
stessa struttura di sostegno.

In the endless combinations that it can assume, More by Estel reveals
the balance of timeless elegance in a family of tables that can evolve
into end tables or into tables for dining or conferences. By changing its
measurements in width, length or height, by combining the surfaces
with the many available materials and finishes, the More table gives a
picture of great personality and character, even in its essential, iconic
simplicity.
One single table is transformed into a system that adapts to transversal use, interfacing
with any environment, from the dining room to the living room, from the kitchen to the
bedroom, from the home desk to the office desk, from meeting rooms to the executive
offices. Its structure allows you to create extremely customised and flexible accessories.
The distinctive element is represented by the support structure, consisting of metal legs
that are inserted into the horizontal profiles with a fluid and measured arch.
The surfaces, framed by a wire support frame, are available in different finishes,
laminated, painted, varnished, back-lacquered glass, wood or leather;the same

If there is one thing which defines the Jorge Pensi Design Studio’s
projects, it is their timelessness. Being one of the most prominent
Spanish designers and one of the first to work internationally,Jorge
Pensi has designed for a wide range of signature products, especially
in the contract and office segment. We asked him about the evolution
of working spaces, a point of view that he was happy to furnish us both
from a professional and a personal point of view. (Continue at 4/III)

The profile
A Warm
Elegance
Jorge Pensi
Internationally, 68 percent of teleworkers say that the blurring of boundaries
between work and home life is the biggest downside to working at home:what might
be the next evolution for what has been called the ‘home-office’?
I think that to work at home is very interesting and comfortable if you are able to divide
yourself between work and family life. People must learn to have a time for working and
a time for being with the family, although I know it’s very difficult to do. It is especially
difficult if you work in a creative field, because inspiration can appear at any moment
and not just when you are sitting at your work table.
From what you can see, from your colleagues and peers, are we changing the attitude
toward spaces ‘dedicated to working’? Are we ready to develop a different approach
to our working standard?
We need to develop a new way of working, we need to move towards a more relaxed
approach to our daily work. It is very important to reduce the hours we dedicate to our
jobs, but to do so efficiently:fewer hours but concentrating more and leaving time for
leisure. We need to have the right equipment:tables, seating, lighting and healthy air
conditioning.
What is the general atmosphere in your studio, how do you ‘interpret’ your space?
What is the prevailing attitude on your work days?
As I explained before the general atmosphere in my studio comes from the way
people relate to each other:playing together, creating things that may last, talking
and laughing, exchanging comments and ideas, and above all knowing that we are
designing pieces for a partner with whom we share the same excellent communication
style we use within our workplace.
Stiamo cambiando l’atteggiamento verso i nostri spazi
seduta, illuminazione, insonorizzazione e climatizzazione
sana.
e ridendo, scambiando commenti e idee. Soprattutto
vive all’interno del nostro studio.

dimensioni compatte, poltrona lounge e tavolino,
Estel.

Designed by Jorge Pensi for Estel, the family includes

latest edition to the Night collection, the Embrace bed.The
seats, made with plywood frames, have an ergonomic and
enveloping design making them extra comfortable. The arm
extends behind the back giving continuity and uniformity to
the lines.
For lounge areas there are different models of single
chairs and sofas. The frame is in beech and poplar plywood
combined with a system of comfortable elastic bands. The
padding is in differentiated density polyurethane foam to
ensure the optimal ergonomic functionality of the chair.
Like the chair, the bed is also a graphic icon, we find it in the
headboard, gracefully accommodating the space for sleep
comfort.
Great attention has been devoted to the manual stitching
and the choice of finishes, details that transmit the value
of the highly competent craft skills that make up Estel’s

Your work has been greatly appreciated for the warm, expressive twist you have been
able to give to minimalist and pure forms. Are warmth and sensuality something that
contemporary design has wrongly avoided considering as effective for our daily well-
being?
I have always believed in objects with a soul, with the power to transmit emotions, able
to seduce at first sight.Timeless, to share our precious moments…
I have always tried to escape from commonplace trends. There is not a rule for joining
two points:sometimes it is a straight line, but often it can be a curved line.
Do you think there is place for a more creative environment in our workplace?
My team and I work every day in a very relaxed atmosphere, we are like a family that
shares bad and good moments. We talk a lot, about design, about the confused world
around us and, of course, about personal subjects.
I guess the most inspiring place is our sunny garden in the shade of old trees.
e pure. Calore e sensualità sono qualcosa che il
design contemporaneo ha erroneamente evitato di
considerare come componente efficace del nostro
benessere quotidiano.
preziosi ...

argomenti personali. Credo che il posto più stimolante sia
il nostro giardino soleggiato all’ombra di vecchi alberi.

Until the 24th of June at MACBA, the exhibition Motor of Modernity. Grup R. Architecture,
Art and Design analyses the impact generated in Barcelona by the presence of Grup
R.They became a catalyst of both Catalan architecture and aesthetic culture for
recovering the modernity lost during the years after the Civil War.The group countered
the official styles with other resources, and astutely assimilated European architectural
trends. Architects, exhibition curators and lecturers, and members of Grup R achieved
a synthesis between architecture, art and design in the dark decades of the Franco
regime in the postwar years. The group represented a major impetus to ideas of
modernity, providing a sensible, coherent and ongoing programme in our country.
Estel a Barcellona è
all’Aeroporto di Ricardo Bofill.”
di prestigio internazionale, come all’Hotel W Bcn, a
IT Now! (“Grupo IBM” y “La Caixa”), Banco Santander,
Arag Seguros, Nike, Roche Diagnostics, Mattel, solo per
citare alcune delle realizzazioni. Sul piano stilistico,
le compagnie che scelgono Barcellona come loro
sede prediligono superfici laccate e texturate, vetri
retrolaccati, zone comuni piú ‘animate’ e colorate proprio

“The philosophy of Estel fits perfectly with that of Barcelona,“ says Antonio Casas,“The
quality of its products, the rational design filled with exquisite detail, its wide range of

and collaborate with leading architecture and furnishings studios to create projects
of international prestige, such as W Hotel Bcn, to IT Now! (“Grupo IBM “ y “La Caixa”),

Which is the link between project and kitchen? And how does the time for lunch cope
with the rhythm of our profession?
“The relationship between cooking and architecture is strong. Both are arts of
composition and projects. They both have their roots in matter and in the synthesis of
different elements into a harmonic whole. And it is right to take advantage of food as well
as architecture, in the places and societies that have given them life.
A difference does exist however:while it is difficult to explain architecture to one who
does not know the code, it is much easier to talk about the culture and planning of food.
In the picture my ‘Renaissance Lunch in metaphysics sauce’.That is the perfect
conjunction of classical and modern, tradition and innovation (Brunelleschi):Macaroni
with tomato on the background of the high speed train (De Chirico).”

(see photo) in San Casciano Val di Pesa (Florence), developed in partnership with Estel
for part of the interior design environments. In 2014, he has signed the first kitchen
collection by Antonio Lupi.
metafisica’. Ovvero la congiunzione perfetta di classicità
e moderno, tradizione e innovazione (Brunelleschi):

The new offices of ‘Roche Pharmaceuticals LTD’ occupy two floors in
a new building in Hod-Hasharon Israel and expand over an area of
about 3,000 square meters.
Customer requirements were to design unitary two-story offices
that could take inspiration from the Pharmaceutical world, reason
why the total look concept was taken from the vocabulary of drugs
and pills - the shape of a capsule characterized by clear and clean,
curved lines and clear colors. This total look is characterized by a
combination of straight lines, angular and rounded corners, and
is reflected in section walls that surround the core structure, the
general plan, the staircase plan and shape, ceiling and distribution
of specialty woodworking items. Several meeting rooms were
created, in various sizes ranging from the meeting of two - three
employees, to meeting of 15, and a multi-purpose space that can
accommodate up to 70 employees. One of the major highlights
was the creation of compartmentalization and separation of the
reception lobby and the rest of the office intimate areas, so that the
visitor gets a glimpse to heart of the office.

At the 2014 Milan Furniture Fair, Estel presented an exhibition centered on the fusion
of domestic and public space. A vision that is a synthesis of the values and project
experience gained over many years, the result of constantly listening to the needs of
the two different segments, kept separate for a long time.
Supplies developed by Estel during the its 80 years of history, both for home furnishing
and major contract projects, restoring the conviction that there is an area of confluence
between home and office, of a perfect ambivalence at the root of many projects whose
‘large’ identity can bring the two worlds together.
The table, the bookcase and the wall systems, the chairs, the upholstered lounges,
the fine leather accessories… There are projects whose timeless design and daily
appeal cause us to think that there are examples of widely accepted contemporary and
classic styles. Estel’s designers and craftsmen have concentrated their attention on
these symbolic projects.
Besides originating with the home, the Estel approach also comes from the experience
matured in decades of creating furniture for offices, from the in-depth knowledge of
their specific constraints, functionality, ergonomic needs and regulations. Estel has
come to understand the needs of public places and those who inhabit them. Over the
years and dozens of large contracts, Estel has learned, within those rules and rigorous
technicalities, how to go beyond and has found a way to humanise professional
furnishings and create warmer possibilities. A space that speaks of sensible and
sensory pleasures. In that space textures, finishes, and softened details of angles and
surfaces take on a more homey, comfortable and timeless flavour.
Estel produces solid furniture, designs and forms.
When technology is daily combined with the processes of the most accurate
craftsmanship, from the drawing board and quality tests you pass seamlessly to the
production department where the artisans work. These are the people who have been
responsible for many years for the carpentry, painting, upholstering and manual sewing
of the hides and leather.
Natural materials and a human approach are as important today as they were when the
company started in 1937.The combination of rational and emotional thought in Estel
leads to a continuous search for materials:materials again authentic like the essence
of solid wood, steel, laminate, Italian leathers, fabrics, aluminium, plastic…
A good design is not only aesthetic, but also gives good service. Expertise in supplying
the most complex, high-volume production, control of the processes, delivery and
installation, and attention to costs are the characteristics that allow Estel to be as close
as possible to the needs of daily life, from work to community projects to new housing
schemes.
The use of solid wood in its natural state and material, adds
new definitions to the new surfaces of the Niemeyer table,
also present in the double gullwing version, in solid maple
and with pleasantly rounded corners that makes them more
ergonomic.
E-wall, design manager Alberto Stella:
a wall-covering system easily equipped
with functional modules: cabinets,
shelves, sliding doors, partitions. The
minimal line and the use of different
finishes allow the system to be elegantly
integrated into any type of environment.
E-wall, design manager Alberto Stella, è un
sistema di rivestimento murale articolato
in pensili, mensole, ante scorrevoli, setti
divisori. La linea minimale e l’uso di
diverse finiture permettono al sistema
d’integrarsi con eleganza in qualsiasi tipo
di ambiente.
An attention to gestures and interaction makes the Tabouret stool
or small table easy to move thanks to the solid wood seat that is
curved to be both decorative and to form practical handles.
For the Embrace line, a version Gran Relax has been
introduced where the enveloping comfort of a large armchair
with a headrest blends with the stylistic touch characteristic
of this family of seating together with the aerial panels Fly
and Fly Lux that contribute to the improved acoustics of the
environment with their sound absorbing and lighted side.

Su
sapore domestico, accogliente, senza tempo.
