Agriculture(USDA).Thecountry'soverallriceoutputisestimatedtobe100milliontonnesintheongoing2014-15marketingyear(October-September),oversixpercentlowerthanthelastyear,itsaidinitslatestgrainreport."Continueddeficientrainsand'normal'cyclonesineasterncoastduringOctober-Novembercouldfurtheraffecttheharvestofkharifriceandplantingprospectsfortheupcomingrabirice,"theUSDAreportsaid.TheUSDAestimates2014-15riceproductiontoinclude87milliontonnesofkharifrice(versus91.7milliontonneslastyear)and13milliontonnesofrabirice(versus14.9milliontonneslastyear),Riceisgrownintwoseasons--kharif(summer)andrabi(winter).Currently,kharifriceisreadyforharvestandtheplantingofrabiriceisunderwayinsomeplaces.AccordingtotheUSDA,theIndiangovernment'sfirstadvanceestimateforthekharifriceproductionis88milliontonnesandrecentfloodsinAssamandadjoiningstates,aswellasdroughtlikeconditionsinUttarPradesh,mayfurtherpressuretheofficialkharifproductionestimate.WhilekharifriceplantingimprovedduetogoodrainsinlateAugustandearlySeptember,overallproductivityislikelytobelowerthanlastyearduetodelayedplantingandprolongedmoisturestressduringcriticalstagesaftertransplanting,.Onrabirice,theUSDAsaidthatdeficient2014monsoonrainsinthesouthernstatesofAndhraPradeshandTelangana,aswellastheeasternstatesofBihar,Jharkhand, andWestBengalarealsolikelytoaffectplantingandproductionprospectsoftherabirice.Statingthatnearly42percentofthericecropinIndiaisunirrigated,withtherest58percentunderirrigation,theUSDAreportsaid:"Consequently, ricetransplantinginmostofthericegrowingareaswasdelayedby3-4weeksasaresultoftheperiodicandprolongeddryspellsin2014.
Areaundercastorseedwasrecordedat10.35lakhha.on10thOct,2014against9.84lakhhacoveredinlastyear.Itis52thousandhahigherthanlastyear.AreainGujaratwasrecordedat7.33lakhhaagainst6.22lakhhalastyear.However,areahasdecreasedinRajasthanfrom1.92to1.49lakhhathisyear.AreainAndhraPradeshhasincreasedslightlyfrom1000hato45thousandhathisyear.howeverinTelenganaithasdecreasedfrom83to66thousandha.thisyear.InotherstatesTherehasbeennomajorchangeinarea.Higherareacoveragehintshigherproductionthisyearasweatherhasbeenfavorabletillnow.
Indiaislikelytowitnessdropof46.8%inthecottonexportsthisyearduetoweakglobalimportdemand.AccordingtoUSDAIndiaisexpectedtoexport1.089milliontonnesofcottonthisseason(Oct'14-Sep'15)comparedto2.047milliontonnesaseasonbefore.Worldcottonexportisexpectedtofallto7.490milliontonnnesin2014/15whichwas8.908milliontonnesin2013/14.
Turmericfuturesswelledtotwoweekshighonstrongdemand,shortcoveringinnearmonthfuturesamidnextyearoutputconcernsduetoweaksowing.TheNCDEXturmericfortheNovemberdeliveryendedthedayatRs6160,upRs44or0.72%.Freshbuyingwasseeninturmericduetostrongexportdemandinmajorproducingstates.TradersmentionedthatthesowingofnewcropisstillamajorconcerninstateslikeAndhraPradeshandTamilanduduetodelayedmonsoonrainfallandpoorpricerealizationbycultivators.SimilartrendisalsoobservinginMaharashtraasnotmuchsowinghasbeenreportedinSangli.Ontheotherside,stockshavedepletedinlocalmandieswithstrongpaceduetosteadyexportdemand.TurmericjumpedalmostRs366ormorethan6%toRs6198levelleadbybargainbuyingsupport.TheNCDEXTurmericNovemberdeliveryendedthedayatRs6160,upRs44or0.72%andtheopeninterestadded105tonnesto10,515tonnes,indicatingfreshbuying.
