This document summarizes key topics discussed in an anthropology class about the peoples and cultures of Sub-Saharan Africa, including: rivalry and social groups in Swahili coastal cultures; ethnic identities among pan-ethnic, urban/rural, and native/non-native groups; the development of Swahili and Tanzanian national identities; independence movements and policies under Nyerere; genres of musical traditions; concepts of tradition versus modernity; characteristics of oral societies; the fluid and changing nature of traditions over time; and the constructed nature of group definitions.
