3. Legalism
Jews – Law in the NT means the
Law of Moses ( Pentateuch)
Gentiles – Moral code written in
their hearts guided by their
conscience. Romans 2:14 (ESV)
4. Route 1:Works of the Law
Condition: You cannot
break any law
James 210 For whoever keeps
the whole law but fails in one
point has become guilty of all
of it.
5. Route 1:Works of the Law
No one can keep the
whole law (non starter)
Rom 320 For by works of the law no
human being will be justified in his
sight, since through the law comes
knowledge of sin.
6. Route 1:Works of the Law
Christ is the end of the law
meaning..?
Rom 10:4 For Christ is the end
of the law for righteousness to
everyone who believes
7. Route 2: Grace through faith
Grace is an unearned and
unmerited favour from
God received primarily
through faith
8. Route 2: Grace through faith
Danger 1 : Legalism mixed in.
Returning to trusting in our
religious activities rather than
having a relationship in trusting
God.
Danger 2: Cheap grace where
there is profession of faith but
no repentance, no cross, no
discipleship and no Lordship
9. Route 2: How does grace work out?
a. Born of water and the Spirit (John 3:5)
b. If led by the Spirit, you are not under the law
(Gal 5:18)
c. The law is written in the hearts (Jer 31:33)
d. Love is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy
Spirit (Rom 5:5)
e. Love manifested externally more and more
through ‘supplementing faith, virtue,
knowledge, self-control, steadfastness,
godliness, brotherly affection, love.
(2 Pet 1:5-8)
f. Be a witness for Jesus wherever
we are (Acts 1:8)
