FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA)
The FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), the most sweeping reform of our food safety laws in more than 70 years, was signed into law
by President Obama on January 4, 2011. It aims to ensure the U.S. food supply is safe by shifting the focus from responding to contamination to
preventing it.
Pronounced: “Fiz-Mah”
It aims to ensure the U.S. food supply is safe by shifting the focus from
responding to contamination to preventing it.

environments where there is the possibility of incidental food contact.
• H2 - lubricants are food-grade lubricants used on equipment and machine
parts in locations where there is no possibility of contact.
• H3 - lubricants are food-grade lubricants, typically edible oils, used to
prevent rust on hooks, trolleys and similar equipment.

FSMA PMMI Perspective
“Most respondents believe that food processing machinery will be
significantly impacted by the passing of the Food Safety Modernization Act
(FSMA) in early 2011.
Although regulations implementing the law are not yet final, this legislation
means that regulatory bodies are shifting their role from one of responding
to food safety problems to preventing food safety problems. From the food
processor’s perspective, this can mean an infrequent two-hour visual
inspection changing into teams of inspectors assessing whether a plant is
microbiologically clean.
Most food processors and equipment suppliers are just now realizing the
litany of food contamination dangers that current machinery designs hold.
Because of this, respondents believe that many standard machines will
need significant redesigns to adhere to food safety standards”

FSMA – OEM perspective
Quote during VOC interview
“I believe that when the FDA finalizes its
regulations that a few major food producers will be
inspected, targeted, and penalized. Production will
be shut down, fines levied, and publicity generated
– then we will see a significant shift in attention to
wash-down activities. We see our motor/gearbox
business going from 70% painted, 30% stainless
steel to 30% painted, 70% stainless steel”

Durability Beyond - Ingress Protection
Testing requirements: duration 2–3 minutes
IP69K
First “6” indicates:
• “No ingress of dust; complete
protection against contact (dustight)”
IP66 – Water Spray 14.5 PSI from 3m
IP66K – Water Spray 145 PSI from 3m
IP67 - Immersion of device to 1 m
First “6” indicates:
“No ingress of dust; complete protection

IP69K – Water Spray 1450 PSI from
15cm, water at 80°C
Think beyond IP ratings – the tests are fairly easy to pass

Food Packaging/Processing Market Needs
10 Sanitation Principles for Equipment Suppliers to consider
Product must be easily cleanable (sealing, smooth surfaces).
Must use compatible materials (stainless steel).
Must be accessible for Inspection.
No liquid collection (shape, design).
Hollow areas eliminated or sealed.
No niches (pits, cracks, gaps).
Sanitary operational performance.
Validating cleaning and sanitizing protocols.
Separate processes whenever possible.
Meet hygiene and sanitation requirements.
41. 41
Change is coming…
A growing concern over cross contamination, salmonella and other hygienic problems have
driven stricter guidelines. What was once acceptable in this market no longer is in many
cases.
Material Selection: In the past painted or nickel plated solutions were commonly
used. Now stainless steel has become a must.
IP Protection: More applications are driving to an IP66, IP67 or IP69K requirement
rather than the typical IP65.
Shape: Square housings with corners and chamfers are no longer acceptable and
round housings with smooth surfaces are specified.
Lubrication: FDA approved grease is critical.
Cleanable: Labels, tags or any difficult to clean accessories are restricted.

AquaTRUE Designed to handle any washdown environment
IP67 Immersion Test – 1m water depth for 30 mins.
IP66 Washdown Test – Pressure wash from all directions for 5 mins.
Third Party Certification (NSF/ANSO STD 169).
Zero ingress after all testing.
The AquaTRUE was tested at worst case scenario type environments to ensure it
meets the needs of the most demanding applications.
46. 46
Differentiator: Ingress Protection
Micron Feature – The AquaTRUE comes standard with IP66, IP67 and
IP69K protection.
Micron Advantage – All AQT products can withstand high pressure
wash-down, immersion and steam cleaning.
Customer Benefit – This gives the customer the ability to eliminate
expensive enclosures or shielding usually needed to protect the
gearhead.
47. 47
Differentiator: Material Selection
Micron Feature – 300 series stainless steel housing, stainless steel
hardware and output shaft.
Micron Advantage – All external components on the AquaTRUE product
line are stainless steel compared to competitive product which use
aluminum or carbon steel components.
Customer Benefit – This eliminates the additional cost of painting or
plating parts by the customer. Also, painted components tend to chip or
peel.
48. 48
Differentiator: External Housing Features
Micron Feature – Completely round exterior, single piece output
housing.
Micron Advantage – No corners or chamfers. No seems or areas of
ingress.
Customer Benefit – Easily washed down, no areas for bacteria to
collect. No areas for liquid to penetrate the gearhead and damage the
internal components
49. 49
Micron Advantages – Food/Beverage
How Micron is successful in the food packaging/processing market.
Focus on new product development – AquaTRUE – A completely stainless steel,
IP69K sealed food grade gearhead which meets all of the market requirements.
Product Enhancements – UltraTRUE – When higher precision and performance is
needed along with some of the strict requirements of this industry, Micron is able to
enhance it’s UltraTRUE product line to meet these specific demands. IP67 sealing,
epoxy paint, stainless steel housings and food grade grease options are just a few of
the common modifications.
Customization – All Products – Micron’s ability to make both minor and major
modifications to their standard product offering with minimal impact to both price and
delivery help to meet the demands of any market.
