KINDERGARTEN SHAPE LESSON Tutor: Jodi Dean  Geometry: Basic Shapes Date: April 23, 2009 Time Allotment: 30 minutes Instructional Objective:  The learner will identify shapes.  Rationale:  By learning about shapes, the student will begin to learn characteristics for application in pattern recognition and other geometry applications.   • 3. ‘A Rectangle’ worksheet from Incentive Publications;
  • 5.
  • 6. Play Shape board game with student, and state shapes to student and then have them repeat the name before they move their piece around the board.
  • 8. Explain to student that he will be reviewing names and characteristics of shapes;
  • 9. Go through the “A Rectangle” sheet and give characteristic of a square to student. Have student color square as tutor goes through worksheet.
  • 10. Check for understanding by understanding by having student state characteristics of a rectangle and checking for accuracy via utilization of flashcards;
  • 11. Model: Take rectangle flashcard and state to child that this a rectangle and it has four sides, two short sides and two long sides.
  • 12. Repeat this multiple times, prompting student to help in the process and explain what you do next.
  • 14. Give student play-doh, and have student make rectangle, and as time allows the circle, triangle, rectangle, diamond and oval. Have student check accuracy against flashcard; have student remake each shape until student succeeds consistently.
  • 15. Guide student as needed, correcting or prompting as they go.
  • 17. Have student complete Shape Puzzle-Bee Puzzle Pattern worksheet, having student cut-out, name and glue shapes to correct place.
