European Foundation for the Advancement of Doing Philosophy with Children

network meeting
1, 2 and 3 November 2013 in

Birthday party
SOPHIA is the European Foundation for the Advancement of Doing Philosophy with Children.
Founded 1993 in Amsterdam we celebrate SOPHIA’s 20 th anniversary. http://sophia.eu.org/

Theme
The general theme of the meeting is DIVERSITY referring to differences in ethnicity, religion, age,
sexual preferences, ways thinking and being, and in the tradition of SOPHIA: ways of doing philosophy
with children.

Program general
Friday 1st of November there will be a public day for everybody (inside and outside of SOPHIA) with
workshops where people present what they do, did, created, wrote etc. On Friday there also will be a
whole day SOPHIA mini-course to introduce people who are interested into the field of PwC (by
SOPHIA board members).
Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd will be the official SOPHIA network meeting. The character of those
days is that members of SOPHIA present what they do and are willing to discuss with a 'critical friendattitude' with colleagues their practise. Don’t hesitate to become a member, everybody interested in
doing philosophy with children is welcome. If you, as member of SOPHIA, want to do
workshops/presentations send a mail.
1
The three days have also cultural elements. And there are plenty of high standard cultural things to do
and see in Amsterdam. See Program details

Location
The meeting Friday will start 09:00 and will end Sunday around 18:00. The meeting will be in the
centre of Amsterdam in two old buildings of the Protestant Diacony, next to The Hermitage
Amsterdam.

Address
Van Limmikhof (main building) en Corvershof (hall for plenary meetings)
Nieuwe Keizersgracht 1A
1018 DR Amsterdam
For people who want to participate on Friday it is € 80. The SOPHIA network meeting on Saturday and
Sunday is - as always - low-costs. That means you have to be member (and have already paid € 25
for yearly fee) or have to become member. And we ask € 15 organisational fee. Everybody has to pay
for their own travel and stay. Relatively cheap joined lunches, dinners will (probably) presented, you
have to pay for those extra as well as for cultural events. For the three days (including SOPHIA
membership and organisational fee) we ask € 120 (again exclusive travel, stay, food and drinks).
See also Costs and Registration
We have some suggestions for cheap stay in Amterdam, see Stay. And Transport information.
We hope to have informed you with this enough at the moment to plan to come, register and buy your
tickets. Bring as many people with you as you can. We hope to have a wonderful, interesting, exciting
meeting with many people from Europe to create a stronger and even more interesting European
network of people interested in and doing Philosophy with Children. Let's give it a boost.
Don't hesitate to write if you have questions!

Workshops on Friday
Workshops go on when there are at least 12 registrations
Rob Bartels: Philosophy for democracy
Presentation of the PhD Theses Philosophy for democracy, thinking, dialogue and diversity in primary
school.
Dealing with diversity is one of the main challenges in democracy. The research project Philosophy
for democracy aims to investigate the contribution of Philosophy with Children to development of
democratic skills and attitudes. The recognition and the appreciation of diversity is one of these.
Kristof van Rossem: Philosophy with children – the socratic style
In this workshop, I will demonstrate a style of leading a philosophical conversation that is inspired by
the Socratic method. More specifically, I will show 6 movements in the facilitation style that make a
philosophical dialogue a Socratic one.
Diversity as dealing with differences is the core activity of a Socratic dialogue.

Joke Jongejan: Working with volunteers in a multicultural school environment
Exchanging methods, successful practices, pitfalls and changes. Five years of experiences of doing
philosophy in Amsterdam schools.
Peter Worley: Creating Diversity within a Dialogue
Peter will run an enquiry, using the The Philosophy Foundation’s PhiE method, that addresses issues
surrounding diversity. He will then share some (hopefully already demonstrated) strategies
developed and used by The Philosophy Foundation for creating diversity of ideas within an enquiry
around the central idea of ‘identifying controversies’. Peter will also say something about the right
kind of diversity of ideas within a philosophical enquiry; which kind of approaches are to be
promoted and which avoided.
Emma Worley: The Philosophy Foundation working in London Suburbs
The Philosophy Foundation works in schools and other places with a diversity of children. How and
why they deal with diversity is the main topic of this talk and workshop, which will include a number
of Philosophical Enquiries run by one of The Philosophy Foundation’s team of philosophers, that will
show strategies for reaching different learners within a group.
Catherine McCall: Guided Socratic Discussion Workshop
There are some topics and issues that are hard to deal with when working with a group of children
from diverse cultures. Among these are: racism and issues concerning citizenship and migration. This
workshop will demonstrate how the Guided Socratic Discussion [GSD] p4c curriculum deals with
violence, immigration and racism issues. The GSD curriculum has been used with 3,000 children in
Scotland with great success, especially in areas where violence, racism, sectarianism and sexism are
present.
Ed Weijers: Fruitful differences in thinking
In some methods doing philosophy differences is thoughts and ways of thinking are essential for the
philosophical inquiry. Searching for opposite philosophical positions can even be a goal. The
workshop will demonstrate such a method and will be followed by an exploration of the inquiry in
terms of differences related to the moving and deepening of the inquiry.
Bruno Curko: Philosophy with Children in Croatia
The ‘Petit Philosophy’ – ‘Mala Filozofija’ group works with different groups of children in Croatia. We
work also with groups with mixed background and regional nationalities. Some of our projects doing
5
philosophy with children has been very successful in overcoming sensitive issues in our region. The
workshop will show how we worked.

Workshops on Friday Workshops go on when there are at least 12 registrations Rob Bartels: Philosophy for democracy Presentation of the PhD Theses Philosophy for democracy, thinking, dialogue and diversity in primary school. Dealing with diversity is one of the main challenges in democracy. The research project Philosophy for democracy aims to investigate the contribution of Philosophy with Children to development of democratic skills and attitudes. The recognition and the appreciation of diversity is one of these. Kristof van Rossem: Philosophy with children – the socratic style In this workshop, I will demonstrate a style of leading a philosophical conversation that is inspired by the Socratic method. More specifically, I will show 6 movements in the facilitation style that make a philosophical dialogue a Socratic one. Diversity as dealing with differences is the core activity of a Socratic dialogue.
Joke Jongejan: Working with volunteers in a multicultural school environment Exchanging methods, successful practices, pitfalls and changes. Five years of experiences of doing philosophy in Amsterdam schools. Peter Worley: Creating Diversity within a Dialogue Peter will run an enquiry, using the The Philosophy Foundation’s PhiE method, that addresses issues surrounding diversity. He will then share some (hopefully already demonstrated) strategies developed and used by The Philosophy Foundation for creating diversity of ideas within an enquiry around the central idea of ‘identifying controversies’. Peter will also say something about the right kind of diversity of ideas within a philosophical enquiry; which kind of approaches are to be promoted and which avoided. Emma Worley: The Philosophy Foundation working in London Suburbs The Philosophy Foundation works in schools and other places with a diversity of children. How and why they deal with diversity is the main topic of this talk and workshop, which will include a number of Philosophical Enquiries run by one of The Philosophy Foundation’s team of philosophers, that will show strategies for reaching different learners within a group. Catherine McCall: Guided Socratic Discussion Workshop There are some topics and issues that are hard to deal with when working with a group of children from diverse cultures. Among these are: racism and issues concerning citizenship and migration. This workshop will demonstrate how the Guided Socratic Discussion [GSD] p4c curriculum deals with violence, immigration and racism issues. The GSD curriculum has been used with 3,000 children in Scotland with great success, especially in areas where violence, racism, sectarianism and sexism are present. Ed Weijers: Fruitful differences in thinking In some methods doing philosophy differences is thoughts and ways of thinking are essential for the philosophical inquiry. Searching for opposite philosophical positions can even be a goal. The workshop will demonstrate such a method and will be followed by an exploration of the inquiry in terms of differences related to the moving and deepening of the inquiry. Bruno Curko: Philosophy with Children in Croatia The ‘Petit Philosophy’ – ‘Mala Filozofija’ group works with different groups of children in Croatia. We work also with groups with mixed background and regional nationalities. Some of our projects doing 5
