Este documento describe el proyecto EXTERSIAL GIS, el cual investiga las externalidades territoriales resultantes de las actividades económico-institucionales de los sistemas agroalimentarios locales vinculados a denominaciones de origen de aceite de oliva. Presenta dos estudios de caso sobre el cambio de uso del suelo en la denominación de origen de Estepa y la regeneración de la vegetación nativa en olivares marginales de la denominación de origen de Sierra de Segura. The objective is to investigate and to evaluate the
territorial externalities resulting from the economic-
institutional activities of LAFS which produce typical food
products, such as those linked to olive oil designations of
origin. The aim is to contribute to the decision making
processes inherent to the public policies that reward the
reduction of the negative externalities and the
encouragement of the positive ones. Some of the
externalities to be considered are the preservation of the
agricultural landscapes, the diminution of the soil erosion,
the protection of the agricultural systems’ biodiversity.

Results:
1.Due to differences in scale, dates and agro-ecosystems, map comparison is not completely feasible
2.Land dynamics reveal the next trends:
• Olives groves increase their surface at the expense of arable crops and, at a lesser extent, of
mosaic orchards and vegetable gardens. This tendency takes place during the last two or three
decades and it is particularly strong during the last one: 2.82 % of the total surface in the region
in 1990-2000 and 4.05% in 2000-2006 (CLC). The main reasons are:
Increased support of the olive oil production by the EU Common Agricultural Policy since 1986,
when Spain entered in the former EEC
Scarce possibilities of subsistence for the former agricultural crops, particularly cereals, because of
the little territorial competitiveness, in physical terms, in comparison with other European
production areas
Abandon of mosaic orchards and vegetable gardens, dedicated formerly to the familiar consumption
New olive groves are generally irrigated and dedicated to an intensive production
• Olive groves losses surface in favor of transport infrastructures (high speed train and highways),
industrial parks, buildings in the neighborhood of urban areas and evaporation or irrigation
pools: 0.56 % of the total surface in the region in 1990-2000 and 0.05% in 2000-2006 (CLC).

Results:
-Agricultural marginalisation (in olive groves) depends on the interactions of physical and socio-economic
factors. Physical factors such as slope degree, soil traits, climate parameters.
- 3,52 % of the area of olive groves in Sierra de Segura D.O. has been identified as being marginal
considering: slope (> 20%), height (> 1,000 m) and use capacity (soil quality).
-Potential restoration (in olive groves) depends on the interactions of bio-physical, ecological and
landscape factors such as connectivity, dispersal spectrum, age and type of neighbor vegetation (or land
use), contingency factors (uses and perturbations), aspect and rainfalls.
- 0,30 % of the area of olive groves in Sierra de Segura D.O. has been a high potential of native vegetation
regeneration considering: aspect, land use neighbor and rainfalls.
-Overlay of Native vegetation regeneration map and Marginal olive groves map has showed that 8,66 % of
marginal groves has high potential of restoration.
-For landscape management to biodiversity conservation is advisable an organised abandonment of
marginal olive groves with high and medium potential of regeneration.
