3. Foods in the Southwest
Indians from the Southwest are farmers.
They grew corn, beans, squash, melons, and fruit.
In the desert, they ate birds, rabbits, and wild turkeys.
They dug ditches for irrigation.
4. Clothing of the Southwest
Women in this region wore simple dresses made out of
blankets sewn together, but they later wore long full
skirts and velveteen blouses.
Men wore shirts with sleeves and moccasins.
When the weather got colder, cotton was worn.
5. Homes of the Southwest
Adobe homes and Hogan's are found in this region.
Adobe is sun dried bricks made out of clay and straw.
These homes could only be reached by ladders.
Hogan’s are traditional Navajo houses that are eight
sided and round. It is warm in winter and cool in
summer.

6. Native American Religions
The people of the Southwest believe that in the universe
there exists an Almighty. The Almighty belief is not
pictured as a man in the sky, but is believed to be
formless and exist in the universe. The sun is a sign and
symbol for that.

7. Tradition or Ceremony of the
Southwest
Navajo Ceremonies are called ways. The most
important is the Night way, a nine day healing
ceremony in which friends and relatives of a sick
person gather. Religious leaders, or singers attend
ceremonies.
8. Arts/Crafts of the Southwest
The tribes from the Southwest were great
weavers.
With the hot/dry land, clay was used to make
pottery.
Rocks of many colors were also crushed to create
sand paintings.

9. A Famous Apache
One famous Native American from this region is
Geronimo. He is famous because he was a remarkable
leader of the Chiricahua Apache. He was a spiritual
leader who defended his people when the U.S. invaded
their land for over 25 years.
10. Interesting Facts from the
Southwest
Before Indians in the Southwest region got horses, they traveled by foot
and dug holes in the sides of the mesas and cliffs (in order to climb.)
In Southwestern tribes, spiders are connected to the culturally
important art of weaving.
According to tradition, Spider Woman instructed the women of Navajo
how to build the first loam from exotic materials.
The Apache took frequent baths to clean their bodies of both bad luck
and evil spirits.
The Navajo are the largest Indian tribe in the United States.
