5. Constructed Response Example
In the reading, An old world religion in a new world it is
stated that “religion permeated all of life” (Line 5), which
accurately describes colonial Latin America. During the Spanish
colonization there was “no distinction between religion and
politics or religion and economics” (Line 6). The government
officials ruled based on the teachings of the bible and collected
taxes from the people for the church to gain power. The Spanish
further went on to convert the local Native American tribes to
Roman Catholicism ending their own native religions. These
Spaniards were clergy and soldiers (Line 32) whom “became
incensed when the inhabitants of the land could not perceive the
superiority of Christianity,” (Line 34) thus forcing conversion with
violence when they believed it necessary. It is because of religions
role in politics, economy and war that it did “permeate all of life”
in colonial Latin America.
