Version 2.8.2 HP Sizer

Microsoft SharePoint 2010

The HP Sizer for Microsoft SharePoint is a complimentary planning resource that encapsulates knowledge
gained from extensive performance characterization of Office SharePoint Server 2007 and SharePoint
20101 in the HP Solution Alliances Engineering performance labs, widespread collaboration between HP
and Microsoft, and numerous SharePoint performance whitepapers produced by HP engineering. The tool
offers a quick and consistent methodology for determining a "best-fit" server for individual needs, quick
solution configuration comparisons, and a highly detailed, customizable server and storage solution
complete with bill of materials and pricing.

Update : MAJ 12/05/10 :

HP Sizer for SharePoint solicits data or uses built-in defaults to determine optimal configurations based on
SharePoint best practices and supported growth paths. Selectable default configurations include entry level,
highly available, and application optimized solutions. A "what if" feature allows rapid comparison of the
effects of workload changes, platform and storage technology selection, etc., and it provides role-based
server configurations, capacity utilization, and estimated network traffic. Users can select a configuration
and then customize their environment by adding or substituting components within best-practice guidelines.

1
It’s the same way for SPS2010, but you need tow tools.

FORMATIONS SHAREPOINT
HP Sizer for SharePoint also addresses one of the most critical areas of SharePoint server design:
performance and capacity planning for the storage subsystem. The storage sizing and configuration
capabilities offer detailed best-practice storage volume and RAID recommendations to support database
and content storage needs using HP direct-attach storage, HP StorageWorks MSA or EVA Storage SAN
solutions.

Help for the HP Sizer for Microsoft SharePoint 2010
 Overview

Welcome to the HP Sizer for Microsoft SharePoint 2010

Corporate organizations typically have adequate knowledge of their business requirements for solutions they wish
to deploy. They do not, however, typically understand in detail the system resources that will dictate the number,
type and configuration of servers that will support that business need. The purpose of this tool is to enable you to
determine the most appropriate deployment of HP BladeServer and ProLiant servers and HP StorageWorks
technologies to suit your SharePoint 2010 requirements, based on best-practice configurations developed by HP.

A Major New Version of the Sizing Tool

This first version of the HP Sizer for SharePoint 2010 provides increased functionality, a broader range of server
and storage technologies and choices, and an enhanced storage configuration process that leverages server-
internal, DAS and SAN as appropriate for the solution. Users can either let the sizer recommend the best storage
solution, influence the process by selecting DAS or SAN, or even pick specific StorageWorks products and simply
have the sizer determine the configuration details. The "best practices advisor" has also been extended to provide
additional guidance and best-practice recommendations as appropriate during the sizing process. Of particular
note is the ability to size and configure Hyper-V R2 based virtualized solutions for SharePoint. Note that several of
the screens used as part of the information input process have changed compared to the SharePoint Server 2007
sizer, including the addition of a new "Application Services" screen. Other key features include the ability to
configure HP Business Copy (BC) and Continuous Access (CA) storage volumes as part of a SAN solution to
provide higher resiliency for critical data. The sizer can also generate HP Insight Orchestration (HPIO) XML
templates for the final solution. The results and "look ahead" screens have also been enhanced to provide more
information. Note also the capability to customize components of the full solution, including the ability to change
role-server models within a server family. For further information on all the new features in any sizer version, click
the "What's New" button on the main sizer screen.

The Information Input Process

The user interface utilizes a series of screens to solicit information about the required solution, and is designed to
suit users of varying levels of experience or familiarity with the solution products. Less-experienced users can
make picks from the initial screens and then accept the default values from the later (more detailed) screens;
whereas experts can adjust these later values to exactly match their needs, or make adjustments based on their
knowledge of specific customers or vertical markets. The process starts with a simple pick from three "business
profiles" (SMB, Mid-Market, Enterprise). The selection of one of these will result in values on the next page
(Usage Data) being populated to reflect a typical set of metric values for the business type. These metrics include
number of subscribers, %concurrent, operations/hour, etc. Subsequent screens (Solution Component, Application
Services, Usage Characteristics, etc.) request more detailed information about the expected workload mix in
terms of user task percentages, and other inputs that will affect the final solution design (requirements for high-
availability, etc.) and server/storage technologies used (Solution and Storage Architecture). Many values are also
checked against expected ranges. Other inputs are also cross-checked to ensure that the overall solution can be
configured as desired.

Best Practices Adviser Proposals

A notable feature of this sizing tool is the inclusion of a "best practices adviser", the knowledge base for this being
derived from research and results obtained during product characterization in the HP APS Performance Labs.
Examples of this feature are the recommendation of multiple Index search servers (a new capability in SharePoint
2010) if Indexing load is high; and to propose dedicated application servers where the workload indicates this
would be most beneficial. The user is free to accept or decline each of these proposals and can later use
comparative "what if" analyses to compare the solutions produced as a result of these choices. In general, as

                         MEG-JIC - Pierre Erol GIRAUDY – http://www.meg-jic.com
FORMATIONS SHAREPOINT
these proposals follow "best practices" it is recommended to accept them; unless the user's experience, specific
customer knowledge or other factors preclude it.

What-If Scenarios

The design of the information input and results presentation process make it very easy for the user to execute
comparative or "what if" scenarios very quickly and simply. Each page has both Next and Previous buttons and a
page 'list' in the left hand column allowing selection of a specific user input page. Thus, once having reached a
solution on the "solution lookahead" page, the user can move back to any previous input page, make a change,
and quickly see the effect of that change on the solution result. This applies to both the data input fields and the
answers (accept/decline) given to any "best practices advisor" pop-up screens. Note that the solution lookahead
page content has been enhanced in this version to provide more information, including details of virtualized
solutions and a better depiction of the estimated network traffic between servers.

Results Presentation

The user is presented with the solution result in several formats, each of which highlights certain information.

The solution lookahead screen lists the number and type of servers for each identified solution component (server
role), and estimates of the server capacity utilized and network traffic between clients and servers. For virtualized
solutions, it also shows how solution role VMs map to the proposed physical hardware. This screen also contains
links to show the Calculation Log and the Additional Info screen. The Calculation Log shows how the solution was
developed from the user's input and thus demonstrates how those inputs affect the solution design. The
Additional Info screen provides a tabbed list of URL links to related solution information contained on both the HP
ActiveAnswers pages and also the Microsoft TechNet pages.

The detailed solution alternatives screen, accessed via the Calculate Full Solution button, allows the user to view
a detailed solution display and to customize their solution. Note that results presented on the detailed solution
screens can also be printed, or copy/pasted to other programs (e.g. the ability to copy a formatted solution result
and BOM to an MS Word document). This can provide considerable time savings, and avoid transposition errors,
when creating an RFP document for example.

Interview Screen Help
 Introduction

This interview screen simply explains the purpose of the tool and briefly describes how to use the tool; and what
to expect in terms of solution results.

 Solution Reference

Enter any information here that will assist you to reference your configured solution. Note that these fields are
optional.

 Business Profile

Click on the option that most closely matches the general business profile. This will pre-populate values for the
Usage Data on the next screen to reflect typical user populations and activities for the respective size and type of
business. These values are useful to demonstrate how the sizer develops different configurations based on
business and usage data; or as a starting point if you are unsure as to your exact needs. All these example usage
data values may be modified on the screens that follow to meet your exact needs.

                         MEG-JIC - Pierre Erol GIRAUDY – http://www.meg-jic.com
FORMATIONS SHAREPOINT
Clicking on the blue and white Information icon present along side screen input fields will display a small screen
showing additional information. Similar icons are provided in all the screens that follow.

 Usage Data

Enter anticipated overall usage data values for SharePoint 2010. Example values are pre-loaded based on your
Business Profile choice, any of which may be changed. Note that the "concurrency percentage" should reflect the
percentage of the total subscribers that are likely actively using SharePoint during peak usage. The "peak number
of user requests per hour" should reflect the number of SharePoint operations a typical user will execute during
their busiest hour. The tool uses this information to determine the most appropriate best-practice configuration to
support your required overall capacity needs. Subsequent interview screens allow you to specify user activity in
more detail, by percentage use of specific site functions (document access, browsing, search, etc.).

 Solution Component

Specify the percentage breakdown of overall user activity in terms of SharePoint site access (e.g. browse, topics,
news, document access, check-out/-in, etc.), Search operations, and Team Site access. The tool uses this
information to determine how best to optimize the configuration to meet your function-specific needs.

 Application Services

Use this screen to specify requirements for a range of Application Services. The initial questions relate to the
Search Service (Index and Query services) and the expected usage of these components. The remaining
questions relate to other application services that the solution may require (Example: Excel Services) and asks
the user if they wish to dedicate an application server to any of these services. In subsequent versions of this
sizer, the intent is that some of these be accurately sized as part of a new set of workload definitions. For
example, HP APS intends to add a BI-type workload to the Solution Component screen, with the sizing metrics
and algorithms being based on ongoing lab testing. This would mean that items such as Excel Services and
PerformancePoint services and their capacity usage of dedicated application services would then be accurately
calculated, and they would be removed from picks on this screen. Other workloads, such as social networking,
are planned over time; as is a more detailed study of possible search service configurations.

 Usage Characteristics

Indicate anticipated usage characteristics. These include (i) High Availability requirements, (ii) the desired
percentage of max recommended server capacity to utilize, (iii) content storage size, (iv) disk fill factor, (v) the
ratio of index size to corpus size (if known), and (vi) requirement to include on-disk backups as part of the storage
solution. The tool uses this information to optimize the solution configuration to meet your specific needs in these
areas. Other ongoing lab studies will provide further storage optimizations over time, relating to the various new
application and logging databases in SharePoint 2010

 Solution Architecture

Specify deployment requirements. You can choose from BladeServer or Rack mounted, Intel and/or AMD CPUs,
and specify a Physical or Virtualized solution. Note that some of these options may be either disabled or
mandated depending on other choices you have made on previous input screens.

                         MEG-JIC - Pierre Erol GIRAUDY – http://www.meg-jic.com
FORMATIONS SHAREPOINT
 Storage Architecture

You can pick one of three major choices. Either (i) allow the sizer to recommend the StorageWorks technology
that is most applicable to the solution, or (ii) require DAS or (iii) require SAN. Within these later two choices you
can also either (i) allow the sizer to recommend the best specific solution, or (ii) pick a specific storage product.
Note that there will be some cases where solution options are prevented or mandated, depending on your
answers to previous questions. There may also be cases where the sizer will have to over-ride your request (e.g.
the sizer may mandate DAS storage if you chose server-internal but the required corpus size and related
databases can not fit on the number of disks available on the server). The sizer will make every effort to configure
the solution as you desire, but in cases where limits are exceeded it will advise you and propose alternatives.

Click on the "HP Business Copy/HP Continuous Access..." button to configure local and/or remote replication
services as required.

  • 3. FORMATIONS SHAREPOINT Version 2.8.2 HP Sizer Microsoft SharePoint 2010 The HP Sizer for Microsoft SharePoint is a complimentary planning resource that encapsulates knowledge gained from extensive performance characterization of Office SharePoint Server 2007 and SharePoint 20101 in the HP Solution Alliances Engineering performance labs, widespread collaboration between HP and Microsoft, and numerous SharePoint performance whitepapers produced by HP engineering. The tool offers a quick and consistent methodology for determining a "best-fit" server for individual needs, quick solution configuration comparisons, and a highly detailed, customizable server and storage solution complete with bill of materials and pricing. http://g3w1656g-vip.houston.hp.com/SB/Installs/SharePoint_SizingTool.zip Update : MAJ 12/05/10 : HP Sizer for SharePoint solicits data or uses built-in defaults to determine optimal configurations based on SharePoint best practices and supported growth paths. Selectable default configurations include entry level, highly available, and application optimized solutions. A "what if" feature allows rapid comparison of the effects of workload changes, platform and storage technology selection, etc., and it provides role-based server configurations, capacity utilization, and estimated network traffic. Users can select a configuration and then customize their environment by adding or substituting components within best-practice guidelines. 1 It’s the same way for SPS2010, but you need tow tools. MEG-JIC - Pierre Erol GIRAUDY – http://www.meg-jic.com
  • 4. FORMATIONS SHAREPOINT HP Sizer for SharePoint also addresses one of the most critical areas of SharePoint server design: performance and capacity planning for the storage subsystem. The storage sizing and configuration capabilities offer detailed best-practice storage volume and RAID recommendations to support database and content storage needs using HP direct-attach storage, HP StorageWorks MSA or EVA Storage SAN solutions. http://h71028.www7.hp.com/enterprise/cache/3960-0-0-0-121.html MEG-JIC - Pierre Erol GIRAUDY – http://www.meg-jic.com

  • 19. FORMATIONS SHAREPOINT HELP Help for the HP Sizer for Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Overview Welcome to the HP Sizer for Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Corporate organizations typically have adequate knowledge of their business requirements for solutions they wish to deploy. They do not, however, typically understand in detail the system resources that will dictate the number, type and configuration of servers that will support that business need. The purpose of this tool is to enable you to determine the most appropriate deployment of HP BladeServer and ProLiant servers and HP StorageWorks technologies to suit your SharePoint 2010 requirements, based on best-practice configurations developed by HP. A Major New Version of the Sizing Tool This first version of the HP Sizer for SharePoint 2010 provides increased functionality, a broader range of server and storage technologies and choices, and an enhanced storage configuration process that leverages server- internal, DAS and SAN as appropriate for the solution. Users can either let the sizer recommend the best storage solution, influence the process by selecting DAS or SAN, or even pick specific StorageWorks products and simply have the sizer determine the configuration details. The "best practices advisor" has also been extended to provide additional guidance and best-practice recommendations as appropriate during the sizing process. Of particular note is the ability to size and configure Hyper-V R2 based virtualized solutions for SharePoint. Note that several of the screens used as part of the information input process have changed compared to the SharePoint Server 2007 sizer, including the addition of a new "Application Services" screen. Other key features include the ability to configure HP Business Copy (BC) and Continuous Access (CA) storage volumes as part of a SAN solution to provide higher resiliency for critical data. The sizer can also generate HP Insight Orchestration (HPIO) XML templates for the final solution. The results and "look ahead" screens have also been enhanced to provide more information. Note also the capability to customize components of the full solution, including the ability to change role-server models within a server family. For further information on all the new features in any sizer version, click the "What's New" button on the main sizer screen. The Information Input Process The user interface utilizes a series of screens to solicit information about the required solution, and is designed to suit users of varying levels of experience or familiarity with the solution products. Less-experienced users can make picks from the initial screens and then accept the default values from the later (more detailed) screens; whereas experts can adjust these later values to exactly match their needs, or make adjustments based on their knowledge of specific customers or vertical markets. The process starts with a simple pick from three "business profiles" (SMB, Mid-Market, Enterprise). The selection of one of these will result in values on the next page (Usage Data) being populated to reflect a typical set of metric values for the business type. These metrics include number of subscribers, %concurrent, operations/hour, etc. Subsequent screens (Solution Component, Application Services, Usage Characteristics, etc.) request more detailed information about the expected workload mix in terms of user task percentages, and other inputs that will affect the final solution design (requirements for high- availability, etc.) and server/storage technologies used (Solution and Storage Architecture). Many values are also checked against expected ranges. Other inputs are also cross-checked to ensure that the overall solution can be configured as desired. Best Practices Adviser Proposals A notable feature of this sizing tool is the inclusion of a "best practices adviser", the knowledge base for this being derived from research and results obtained during product characterization in the HP APS Performance Labs. Examples of this feature are the recommendation of multiple Index search servers (a new capability in SharePoint 2010) if Indexing load is high; and to propose dedicated application servers where the workload indicates this would be most beneficial. The user is free to accept or decline each of these proposals and can later use comparative "what if" analyses to compare the solutions produced as a result of these choices. In general, as MEG-JIC - Pierre Erol GIRAUDY – http://www.meg-jic.com
  • 20. FORMATIONS SHAREPOINT these proposals follow "best practices" it is recommended to accept them; unless the user's experience, specific customer knowledge or other factors preclude it. What-If Scenarios The design of the information input and results presentation process make it very easy for the user to execute comparative or "what if" scenarios very quickly and simply. Each page has both Next and Previous buttons and a page 'list' in the left hand column allowing selection of a specific user input page. Thus, once having reached a solution on the "solution lookahead" page, the user can move back to any previous input page, make a change, and quickly see the effect of that change on the solution result. This applies to both the data input fields and the answers (accept/decline) given to any "best practices advisor" pop-up screens. Note that the solution lookahead page content has been enhanced in this version to provide more information, including details of virtualized solutions and a better depiction of the estimated network traffic between servers. Results Presentation The user is presented with the solution result in several formats, each of which highlights certain information. The solution lookahead screen lists the number and type of servers for each identified solution component (server role), and estimates of the server capacity utilized and network traffic between clients and servers. For virtualized solutions, it also shows how solution role VMs map to the proposed physical hardware. This screen also contains links to show the Calculation Log and the Additional Info screen. The Calculation Log shows how the solution was developed from the user's input and thus demonstrates how those inputs affect the solution design. The Additional Info screen provides a tabbed list of URL links to related solution information contained on both the HP ActiveAnswers pages and also the Microsoft TechNet pages. The detailed solution alternatives screen, accessed via the Calculate Full Solution button, allows the user to view a detailed solution display and to customize their solution. Note that results presented on the detailed solution screens can also be printed, or copy/pasted to other programs (e.g. the ability to copy a formatted solution result and BOM to an MS Word document). This can provide considerable time savings, and avoid transposition errors, when creating an RFP document for example. Interview Screen Help Introduction This interview screen simply explains the purpose of the tool and briefly describes how to use the tool; and what to expect in terms of solution results. Solution Reference Enter any information here that will assist you to reference your configured solution. Note that these fields are optional. Business Profile Click on the option that most closely matches the general business profile. This will pre-populate values for the Usage Data on the next screen to reflect typical user populations and activities for the respective size and type of business. These values are useful to demonstrate how the sizer develops different configurations based on business and usage data; or as a starting point if you are unsure as to your exact needs. All these example usage data values may be modified on the screens that follow to meet your exact needs. MEG-JIC - Pierre Erol GIRAUDY – http://www.meg-jic.com
  • 21. FORMATIONS SHAREPOINT Clicking on the blue and white Information icon present along side screen input fields will display a small screen showing additional information. Similar icons are provided in all the screens that follow. Usage Data Enter anticipated overall usage data values for SharePoint 2010. Example values are pre-loaded based on your Business Profile choice, any of which may be changed. Note that the "concurrency percentage" should reflect the percentage of the total subscribers that are likely actively using SharePoint during peak usage. The "peak number of user requests per hour" should reflect the number of SharePoint operations a typical user will execute during their busiest hour. The tool uses this information to determine the most appropriate best-practice configuration to support your required overall capacity needs. Subsequent interview screens allow you to specify user activity in more detail, by percentage use of specific site functions (document access, browsing, search, etc.). Solution Component Specify the percentage breakdown of overall user activity in terms of SharePoint site access (e.g. browse, topics, news, document access, check-out/-in, etc.), Search operations, and Team Site access. The tool uses this information to determine how best to optimize the configuration to meet your function-specific needs. Application Services Use this screen to specify requirements for a range of Application Services. The initial questions relate to the Search Service (Index and Query services) and the expected usage of these components. The remaining questions relate to other application services that the solution may require (Example: Excel Services) and asks the user if they wish to dedicate an application server to any of these services. In subsequent versions of this sizer, the intent is that some of these be accurately sized as part of a new set of workload definitions. For example, HP APS intends to add a BI-type workload to the Solution Component screen, with the sizing metrics and algorithms being based on ongoing lab testing. This would mean that items such as Excel Services and PerformancePoint services and their capacity usage of dedicated application services would then be accurately calculated, and they would be removed from picks on this screen. Other workloads, such as social networking, are planned over time; as is a more detailed study of possible search service configurations. Usage Characteristics Indicate anticipated usage characteristics. These include (i) High Availability requirements, (ii) the desired percentage of max recommended server capacity to utilize, (iii) content storage size, (iv) disk fill factor, (v) the ratio of index size to corpus size (if known), and (vi) requirement to include on-disk backups as part of the storage solution. The tool uses this information to optimize the solution configuration to meet your specific needs in these areas. Other ongoing lab studies will provide further storage optimizations over time, relating to the various new application and logging databases in SharePoint 2010 Solution Architecture Specify deployment requirements. You can choose from BladeServer or Rack mounted, Intel and/or AMD CPUs, and specify a Physical or Virtualized solution. Note that some of these options may be either disabled or mandated depending on other choices you have made on previous input screens. MEG-JIC - Pierre Erol GIRAUDY – http://www.meg-jic.com
  • 22. FORMATIONS SHAREPOINT Storage Architecture You can pick one of three major choices. Either (i) allow the sizer to recommend the StorageWorks technology that is most applicable to the solution, or (ii) require DAS or (iii) require SAN. Within these later two choices you can also either (i) allow the sizer to recommend the best specific solution, or (ii) pick a specific storage product. Note that there will be some cases where solution options are prevented or mandated, depending on your answers to previous questions. There may also be cases where the sizer will have to over-ride your request (e.g. the sizer may mandate DAS storage if you chose server-internal but the required corpus size and related databases can not fit on the number of disks available on the server). The sizer will make every effort to configure the solution as you desire, but in cases where limits are exceeded it will advise you and propose alternatives. Click on the "HP Business Copy/HP Continuous Access..." button to configure local and/or remote replication services as required. MEG-JIC - Pierre Erol GIRAUDY – http://www.meg-jic.com
