This document summarizes the key birding regions in Peru and their signature bird species. It identifies six main regions - North, Center, South, Coastal, Desert, and Sierra. The North has over 1200 bird species including many endemics. The Coastal region along the Pacific coast is home to 54 endemic species like the White-winged Guan. The Desert region is extremely dry but has valleys with unique birds such as the Black-necked Woodpecker. 2. Peruvian Birding Routes North:1200 species, home to some of the most sought-after Peruvian endemics. Center: Low-budget birding route, lots of birding alternatives at different altitudes. South: Best-known route, with Colca Canyon, Lake Titicaca, Cusco, Machu Picchu, Abra Malaga, Manu and Tambopata.
6. Ecuatorial Pacific Coast Birds This coastal region of beautiful deciduous landscapes and warm weather stretches from the border with Ecuador south to the department of La Libertad. Together with the smoothest of Ecuador is one of the most important endemic bird centres in the world, called the Tumbesian region, holding 54 range-restricted bird species. Many of these regional endemic are also Peruvian endemic such as White-winged Guan, Tumbes Hummingbird, Coastal Miner, Surf Cinclodes, Piura Chat-Tyrant, Tumbes Tyrant, Rufous Flycatcher, Peruvian Plantcutter and Bay-crowned Brush-Finch.
16. Peruvian Desert Birds Basically no rain a year falls in this extremely dry region along the pacific coast, making it the driest desert in the world together with the Atacama Desert with which it emerges. However, the desert is crossed by 53 fertile, vegetated valleys with unique set of birds, some of which are endemic to Peru: Black-necked Woodpecker, Peruvian Shear tailed, Cactus Canastero and Slender-billed Finch among others.
21. Pacific Andes Birds The rather dry or semi humid mountains on the western side of the Ander(Pacific) have dramatic landscapes characterized by extreme elevational change. Several Peruvian endemics are found in these habitats like: Bronze-tailed Comet, Striated Earth creeper, Rusty-crowned Tit—Spine tail, Piura Chat-Tyrant, White-checked Cotinga, Rusty-bellied Brush-Finch and Great Inca-Finch among other.
27. Sierra Birds Embedded between the eastern and western slopes of the Andes. Birding here is like being so close to heaven. It is located at around 4000m, but generally the birds can be watched from the roads, or within short walking distance in the forest.
