Interviewing 101:
Non-verbal Communication for U.S. Job Interviews
Attire
Your appearance makes the first impression at any interview. It is important that you have showered,
brushed your teeth, and combed your hair. Wear appropriate attire and not too much perfume.
Proper interviewing attire for men consists of a business suit in a neutral color such as black, gray or navy
blue; a neutral colored tie; dark socks; and dress shoes.
Proper interviewing attire for women consists of a neutral colored business suit—skirt or slacks; simple jewelry and make-up; and medium to low heeled pumps in a conservative color matching the suit.
Transgender individuals should dress for the gender they wish to present or in gender-neutral professional
attire.

Non-verbal Communication
Research indicates there are three main things you want to convey, non-verbally, in an interview:
Poise, Interest and Expressiveness or PIE.
Non-verbal ways to communicate poise include
straight posture, firm handshake and good eye
contact. Avoid excessive fidgeting and nail biting.
Non-verbal ways to reflect interest and
expressiveness include leaning in to illustrate
attentive listening as the interviewer talks, smiling
occasionally, maintaining good eye contact, and
showing a portfolio of your past work.
