SmartLipo is a less-invasive laser-
assisted liposuction treatment
and the first laser-assisted
procedure to be approved by the
FDA. Since its approval in
November of 2006, SmartLipo has
gained favor with physicians and
patients alike for its revolutionary
technology and successful results.
What is SmartLipo?

During the SmartLipo procedure, a thin, wire-sized laser is inserted into a small
incision. The laser is used to liquefy the fat and tighten the skin. This liquified
fat is then drained away using a small, sippy-straw sized cannula.
Because the cannula is only about the size of a paperclip wire, it is able to pass
through the skin easily without damaging surrounding tissue. Since SmartLipo
is a less-invasive procedure, recovery is much quicker and the risk for bruising
is greatly reduced. Treatment is also more precise.

How does SmartLipo work?

SmartLipo can be used to treat any areas that are typically treated with traditional liposuction. It’s
perfect for liposuction touch-ups. Because the SmartLipo cannula is so small, the treatment works best
on small areas of fat that can be liquefied and easily removed. Dr. Schlessinger usually performs
SmartLipo on these troublesome areas:
o Back
o Bra strap area
o Breasts (gynecomastia) in men
o Thighs (saddle bags)
o Hips
o Knees
o Chin
o Neck
o Areas of loose, flabby skin
Which areas can be improved with SmartLipo?

SmartLipo is not designed to remove
substantial amounts of fat. Healthy
patients who are within 25 pounds of
their goal weight are good candidates for
SmartLipo, particularly if they would like
to see improvement in one stubborn
area. Patients who would like to improve
prior liposuction results or touch up
areas that were previously treated are
also encouraged to seek a consultation.
Those patients who lead active lifestyles
and don’t have a lot of time for recovery
can also benefit from SmartLipo.
Who is a good candidate for SmartLipo?

Yes! After puberty, we do not create
new fat cells. Therefore, when you
gain weight, you expand the fat cells
that are already present. Tumescent
liposuction permanently removes fat
cells. Should you gain weight after
liposuction, it will go to preexisting
fat cells. The localized fatty deposits
that existed prior to treatment are
no longer able to grow out of
proportion to the surrounding areas.
Are the results of SmartLipo permanent?

Your new figure will look similar to what you
would expect if you lost an equal amount of
localized fat through diet and exercise
alone. Dimples, ripples and stretch marks
will not be improved with SmartLipo, and
they may even be accentuated following the
procedure. Excessive skin folds are rare with
SmartLipo and most patients are so pleased
with their results that they have no need for
a tummy tuck. However, sometimes a small
tuck can be done to improve the look of
loose skin following SmartLipo.
How will my skin change?

Both procedures are successful if they are
performed by a skilled physician with the
proper training and experience. Dr.
Schlessinger recommends using
SmartLipo in conjunction with tumescent
liposuction to achieve the best results.
Which is preferred, SmartLipo or tumescent
liposuction?

Dr. Schlessinger does not
recommend SmartLipo for skin
tightening. SmartLipo is useful for
removing fat, but when it comes to
skin tightening, other treatments are
less expensive and offer faster
recovery time and better results. He
can recommend other laser
procedures for those patients
interested in tightening loose skin.
Is SmartLipo FDA-approved for skin tightening?

Visceral fat is fat that develops in the
abdomen below the muscle layer.
SmartLipo will not go below the
muscle where visceral fat is located.
It is only good for the fat that is
above the muscle and easily
reachable. This is what makes
SmartLipo so safe. For now, the only
way to reduce visceral fat is through
diet and exercise!
Why won’t SmartLipo work for visceral fat
(fat under the muscle)?

You can elect to have SmartLipo at any time, but
typically it’s best to wait until you’ve finished
having children. If you gain moderate or
significant amounts of weight with pregnancy,
more fat may redistribute to areas previously
treated.
Many patients choose to address stubborn
tummy fat after pregnancy. The results of
SmartLipo are often more successful than
tummy tucks for this purpose. While tummy
tucks are expensive, painful and leave behind
large scars, SmartLipo is nearly scarless and
offers a much faster recovery time.
Can I have SmartLipo even if I intend to have
more children?

SmartLipo is not a viable method of
weight loss. Dr. Schlessinger cautions
that if you’re thinking of using the
procedure to jumpstart weight loss,
you’ll be disappointed. If you are
overweight, he suggests losing 90% of
the weight through diet and exercise to
be sure you can do it on your own. Once
you’re within 10% of your goal weight,
you can view SmartLipo as an option to
treat stubborn areas that still need
improvement.
Can I get SmartLipo if I’m overweight?

Recovery time depends largely on
the anesthetic used prior to the
procedure. Patients are usually
able to return to work one or two
days after the procedure.
