2. Every leader must have a team. Otherwise, you are just some guy standing around yelling at the
air and hoping something gets done. But who do you need on your team? Who do you want on
your team? And do those two groups have to be the same people?
Well, first, we need to tackle that question. In business, you don’t have the luxury of getting
what you want before you get what you need. In other words, regardless of your personal choices
or preferences, you need certain people on your team before you have the luxury of choosing
additional people you want on your team. Yes, I said luxury. Because it is a luxury to be able to
have people you want in addition to people you need. That doesn’t make it bad, it just delineates
the priorities you should have if you want to be successful.
So, who do you “need” on your team. Here goes:
The Mentor
Call him or her a “team leader” or a “coach-player” or whatever you want. Bottom line, this is a
person with experience where it counts, an entrepreneurial spirit and the ability to get others to
listen, pay attention and grow. Early on you might function in that role, but as your business
grows you will be needed elsewhere. At that time, you will need to have a leader “in the game”
who can rally the team and keep them motivated and moving forward.
3. The Messenger
Call it the writer, the content specialist or the PR person, but you need someone on your team
you can trust with your message in every context. A player who can craft short content and long
content, whatever the application and the context needs. In today’s Always On social media
marketplace, you cannot afford to lose your message or to let anyone else control it. Having the
right messenger is vital to your success.
The Operator
Internal operations need to run smoothly if you ever plan on getting anything done. No matter
how great your message is and how excited your people are if you are not operating smoothly
and efficiently you are getting less done at greater cost to you. That’s a losing equation every
time.
Now, about who you might want to add? In addition to these “starters,” who else would make a
winning team in your business?
