Prevent Injury From Falling Ice By Installing Snow Guards
People have become more conscious about saving money and making their home and property as efficient as
possible. One of the ways homeowners can do this is to install standing seam metal roofing. It can reflect
heat away from a home and also keep heat in. Unfortunately, in snowy climates, these slick roofs can pose
serious hazards. Installing a snow guard system on such a roof can substantially decrease the risk of
dangerous snow slides from slippery metal roofing.
Having a roof that can protect your home from unwanted moisture and reflect heat is must for people who
are trying to make their homes green and energy efficient. Sometimes these roofs are so good at sloughing
off snow that entire cascades of snow will slide off the roof at the same time. If someone happens to be
standing below this avalanche they could be seriously injured by the icy snow, or in the worst case, buried
and unable to get free.
This is where a system comes in. By securely fixing s to metal roofing, it causes the snow to be held back.
You needn?t have to worry about the snow collapsing the roof, or causing leaks in the roof because these
guards are designed for metal roofing. Standing seam metal roofing is very durable and strong, and can
handle the added load of even heavy snow.
There are two main types of s. The first kind is small and is designed to hold back low to medium depth snow
with ease. The little metal prongs fit in the shallows of a metal roof and are securely bolted into place. They
hold the snow back using the snow?s own predisposition to stick to itself. These guards still allow the snow
to melt, and even to slide off the roof, but in smaller, less dangerous quantities. These guards can be
matched to your roof color so you don?t have to be worried about unsightly roof fixtures.
The second type of guard is for heavy and deep snow. If your area frequently experiences severe snow
conditions these would be a more appropriate choice. These guards use a rail system to keep even the
deepest snow from crashing off a metal roof. They also clamp securely to the roof, but instead of periodic
cast iron prongs, the rail system has graduating rails that stops the snow in its tracks. The split rail design
allows snow to melt freely and flow down the roof in a much more controlled and safe manner.
Choosing the most durable guards should be your main concern when researching options for purchasing
your system. Many companies and contractors sell snow guards, but the quality of those guards may be
suspect. Finding a manufacturer and buying directly from them is a good way to know that they quality and
reliability of your snow guards is guaranteed.
If you live in a house, or own a building that has standing seam or corrugated metal roofing, you may need
to invest in a snow guard system. Falling ice and snow could present a substantial liability risk for business
owners who fail to take the proper precautions. Don?t get pummeled by sharp falling ice; protect
pedestrians from the dangers of falling snow by installing snow guards on your metal roof!
