4. Kennesaw Georgia Mountain
Battle
Ferdinand was in the
Kennesaw GA Mountain
Battle and was captured
as a prisoner of war on
June 20 1864. He was
held at Andersonville and
survived, (whew!) This
was called the Morgan's
Raid into Kentucky which
lasted from MaySeptember of 1864. This
was a Confederate
victory.

5. Ferdinand and his wife, Mary Emily Swearingen in 1880
were farmers living in Oakland, Cloud, Kansas. Ferdinand
was 41 and Emily was 37. They had 6 boys, William
12, Charles 10, Amos 8, Bailey 6, Harley 3, and Ober 1.
Cloud county was originally named "Shirley" county, but was later renamed "Cloud" county in honor of
Colonel William F. Cloud.[3]
Cloud County was formed from the existing Washington County, Kansas in a joint convention with
Republic and Cloud counties. The county was legally organized on September 6, 1866 with Elk Creek
designated as the temporary county seat.[4]
In 1887, Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway built a branch line from Neva (3 miles west of Strong City)
to Superior, Nebraska

6. Luther and his wife, Emily, and now 7 sons, moved to
Oklahoma as Oklahoma was opening up for settlers.,
Most of Oklahoma was set aside as Indian Territory before the Civil War. It was
opened for general settlement around 1890—the "Sooners" were settlers who
jumped the gun. Statehood came to the poor ranching and farming state in
Oklahoma, but soon oil was discovered and new wealth poured in.
