About Me

My name is Paul Hannigan, President of Letterkenny Institute of Technology. I was
first appointed to this role in January 1998 for a ten year term and was successfully re-
appointed for a further ten year term in January 2008.

During my time with LYIT both myself and the Institute have experienced
tremendous change. We rode the wave of the “Celtic Tiger” as the benefits of capital
investment resulted in a modern state of the art campus in Letterkenny. Student
numbers have grown substantially to 3,000 full-time students with no sign of that
abating. In 2007, the School of Tourism in Killybegs became a fourth academic
school of LYIT and gave the Institute a presence in the South West of the
county.

As someone who was born in Ballyshannon, Co Donegal, I get immense pride from
my job on a daily basis. It has been tremendous to see the educational profile of
school leavers in the North West improve dramatically with people’s ambitions and
aspirations being raised simultaneously.
As well as an academic institution, LYIT is a significant employer, contributing over
€100m annually to the local economy.

This page is about developing closer links with those who wish to find out more about
us. As President I am committed to the continuous development and expansion of
LYIT even in these tough times. Now more than ever the contribution we at LYIT
can make to our community will be increasingly valued. We are up for the challenge
and we look forward to a brighter future.

2. On these pages you can see how much we have grown and get some feel for the
atmosphere on campus. We would encourage those of you who have studied with us
but who perhaps have lost contact over the years to please re-engage.

There are a collection of photographs to view here, both old and new, if you have
anything to contribute please let us know or if there are any inputs you want to make
to LYIT don’t hesitate to get in touch.
