The Blind Writer
My name is Dennis Cunanan, and I’m a blind writer.
Some are born with sight. Some have
seen a million different colors, wondered at thousand different sights, and
marveled at a hundred different scenarios. I couldn’t do all those things,
because I was born blind. I’ve always known that the sky is blue, but I
haven’t seen what blue looks like. I’ve known that kids paint the sun
yellow during art class, but I supposed I couldn’t ever witness how the sun
could change from red, to orange, to a brilliant, blinding white. I’ve learned
about the way colors change hues and shades—that there are more than
fifty shades of grey, black, white, yellow, green. I’ve heard about magenta,
periwinkle, tangerine, and burnt sienna, but I haven’t seen them all.
I haven’t seen them all.
But in spite of that, my other senses have more than made up for my lack
of sight. I haven’t seen my mother, but I knew what she looked like from the

2. thousand times I’ve traced her face with my fingers and palm. I haven’t
seen my sister, but I’ve traced the contours of her face—her eyes, nose,
mouth, ears—so I know without others telling me that she’s pretty. I haven’t
seen my dad, but I’ve touched his hand a thousand times as he held me,
that I knew he’s a strong man. I don’t have sight, but that doesn’t mean I
can’t see. My imagination made up for it too. I know of horses and dragons
and fairies from the many stories mama told me when I was a kid. I made
pictures in my mind. And when my mind is not limited by something as
trivial as sight, I realized how infinite it could be.
I refused to be limited by my blindness. I was born without sight, but all
parts of my body still work perfectly. My imagination, coupled with the help
of technology, have allowed for me to create stories that have been
touching the lives of millions of readers. I was blessed with the gift of
words, and in spite of my inability to see words; I was still able to wield
them into becoming worlds. Thus, I became Dennis Cunanan, the writer.
This website features my collections of short stories, excerpt from my
novels, as well as sneak peak from the next book in my series. I couldn’t
have done it without my wonderful staffs, who not only transcribe the
stories that I dictate, but also maintain this website.
Dear Reader, if you happened to come across this website, I hope and
pray that my stories would mean something to you. I pray that you will be
entertained, and I pray that you, too, will be transported to worlds unknown.
I hope that my unicorns, dragons, princes, princesses, knights, and

Please explain Red to Me
I am writing this in behalf of Dennis Cunanan Ilaw, who sat with me for a
few hours just talking about colors and whatever else he wished he could
literally see. He has heard so much of the colorful sunsets, rainbows, and
flowers that vary from season to season. Today, I was asked the most
difficult task I have ever encountered in my life so far. Dennis Cunanan
Ilaw asked me to tell him about the color Red.

5. My initial thought was, “Is this a trick question?” I smiled nervously a little,
and proceeded to tell him that red is the color of war, of blood, of the
common rose lovers give to their ladies… then I stopped when I realized he
has never seen any of those. How do you describe red to someone who
has never seen red? How do describe that pink is a combination of white
and red when neither concept is realized? My mouth hung open in midsentence but all words had gone from me.
Dennis Cunanan Ilaw must have realized my discomfort for he mildly
laughed and prodded me on: “Just try. Explain to me the color red”.
I collected my thoughts and took his hand. I placed his finger in my pulse
and said: That pumping is my blood. My blood is color red. Red is the
color of love, of life, of intensity, of war, of celebration. Can you visualize
what love’s color must be like?
Dennis’ eyes squinted as if adjusting to the light. “The color of love, you
said? Yes. I can see. Is that the color Red? Then Red must be strong,
resilient, powerful, rises above all colors – would that be correct?

6. I couldn’t believe it! I would never ever know how Dennis Cunanan Ilaw
visualizes the color red, but his description of its characteristic is quite
accurate. I felt then that this was a moment that I would carry the rest of
my life. I was learning life’s lessons in a very spiritual, deeply perceptive
way. I closed my eyes and just thought of the color red. I took in
everything the color red was making me feel. It is the color of passion, the
color that makes sunsets so beautiful, the color of sensuality- Oh; I was
drowning in the color red! It made me think of bravery, honor, love,
forgiveness, yet also of pain, irreverence, and boldness.
What Dennis Cunanan Ilaw was teaching me – knowingly or not – is that
things are not as I see or perceive them to be. Understanding does not
always have to entail seeing. It simply takes an open heart and mind. It
brings me back to my favorite quotes from the book The Little Prince: What
is essential is invisible to the eyes. True enough, being able to see with my
physical eyes, I did not realize how dependent I have become of
understanding and explaining things with just my physical vision, I have
forgotten how to see with the heart.
Dennis Cunanan Ilaw gave me a new perspective in life. For this, I am
grateful. And I wish to share this inspiration and gratitude to all his readers
out there.

It is not through the eyes that a blind man can see, but through his heart.
And it is with this heart that I will continue to look at the world with… it is
with this heart that I will one day change this same world. When Dennis

7. exactly like God’s delighted laughter. Maybe, just maybe, he had finally
done something right, in spite of his limitations.
He was born blind, yes. Perhaps, in
some ways, it had been a blessing, because other people who just turned
blind would have to live with the bitterness of missing something great that
has been lost. Being born blind would mean that he wouldn’t be missing
anything—after all, how can you miss what you never had? He had tried to
cope—saw with his hands and ears, instead. He knew what his family and
closest friends looked like by mapping out his fingers on their faces. He
knew every wrinkle, every curve, and every pimple of the ones dearest to
him.
Dennis Cunanan Ilaw used synesthesia—the coming together of all the
senses in order to perceive things on a higher level. What is the color of
silence? What is the sound of darkness? What is the color of joy? He knew
what colors were… but it was him who put sight onto those colors. It was a
different way to live… different, but effective.
It hadn’t been easy. There were bullies named Marco and Julian. Big boys
who loved to pick on small, defenseless men like him. On the first day of
school, they hid his things and told him to come look for them. On the days
that followed, they would jeer at him, taunt him, and continue to hide his
things. Such completely childish tricks that would just leave Dennis sighing
on his own little corner. Many of his teachers tried to put a stop to the
bullying, but Dennis told them to stop bothering. If I couldn’t defend myself

8. against these kids, then how can I defend myself against life? Life is full of
bullies… we either run away from them, or we learn to deal with them.
His bravado was backed by action. His weapons against the brutes were
words. He made sure not to say anything demeaning, but his retorts were
sharper than knives and swords. Because he couldn’t lift a fist at them, he
would use his wit to defeat them, until finally, Marco and Julian stopped.
When Dennis came to understand the power of words, that’s when he
began to use them with his imagination. He began to live in a world of his
own creation, inside his mind, and with the use of the technology that his
parents gifted him with, he began to spin tales of his own. He began
to write. Story after story was published online by his friends and family.
And so it wasn’t such a big surprise when during graduation, Dennis
Cunanan Ilaw was hailed the valedictorian and Student of the Year,
because of his accomplishment both in academics and extra-curricular
activities.
There will always be walls between you and greatness. Find a way to scale
it.
