Router Vs Layer 3 Switch:-
Today this is a very common question in interview, “What is difference between Router and Layer 3
Switch?” Here, I am writing an answer –
Three major and technical differences are –
1. Packet Switching :-
Router, Packet switching take place using Software that runs on a Microprocessor.
L3 Switch, Packet Switching performs with dedicated ASIC (Application Specific Integrated
Circuits) hardware.
2. WAN Ports / Modules :-
Router will offer some extra WAN port type as T1, T3, Serial etc.
L3 Switch will not offer WAN ports.
3. Services :-
Router will offer NAT, NetFlow and QoS Services.
Switch will not offer such as services.
