The Nation of Islam was founded in 1930 in Detroit by Wallace D. Fard. It promoted black nationalism and racial separatism, believing that white people were devils. The group rejected core beliefs of traditional Islam and Christianity. Malcolm X was an influential member but later left due to differences with Elijah Muhammad. Leaders of the Nation of Islam like Louis Farrakhan and Khalid Abdul Muhammad have expressed anti-semitic, racist, and other controversial views that have drawn criticism.
