In 1968, Calvin Klein found Calvin Klein limited, a coat shop in the New York
Hotel with $10,000. After adding several more lines to his collection, like
underwear and lingerie, he received his first Coty American Fashion Critics’
award. In the 1980s, he revolutionized the men’s underwear industry, which
at that time consisted of basically one product: white underwear sold in packs
of 3, which can be purchased by mom, wife etc. By 2002, Klein had built an
enormous, world famous brand, which was acquired by Phillips van Hausen.
For years after the merger, Klein still was the heart and soul of his brand.
3. Ralph Lauren
Ralph Lauren is a word-renowned American fashion designer, famous for his
Polo Ralph Lauren brand. Hailing from the Bronx, Lauren spent several years
attending Baruch College, but dropped out to go join the US Army. After
briefly working for Brooks Brothers, he decided to open up his own neck tie
business, where he sold neckties of his own design, under the brand Polo. In
1985, he Rhinelander Mansion into the first Polo Ralph Lauren store. In 1997,
the Ralph Lauren corporation went public, and by 2007 he had over 35
separate boutiques all over the United States.
