2. WHAT SHOULD YOU KNOW?
• The 1968 Summer Olympics, officially known as
the Games of the XIX Olympiad were held in Mexico
City from October 12 to October 27.
• These were the first Olympic Games to be staged
in Latin America, the first to be staged in a Spanish-
speaking country, and the first to be staged in
a developing country. They were also the third
Olympics to be held in autumn.
• The Mexican Student Movement of 1968 happened
concurrently.

5. OLYMPIC TORCH RELAY
From August 23 to October 12 the torch
relay recreated the route taken
by Christopher Columbus to the New
World, travelling from Greece through
Italy and Spain to El Salvador and then on
to Mexico.
6. OPENING CEREMONY
. The games were officially opened by the
President Gustavo Díaz Ordaz.
It took place on the 12th October 1968
.
Pablo Garrido read the Olympic Oath in
these Olympic Games.

10. Dick Fosbury of the United
States won the gold medal
in the high jump using his
unconventional jumping
technique, which later
would be given his name.

12. HIGHLIGHTS
Bob Beamon, with his 8.90 m in the long
jump, set an incredible 55 cm improvement
over the previous world record. It stood as
the world record for 23 years, until it got
broken in 1991.

14. HIGHLIGHTS
The introduction of doping tests resulted
in the first disqualification in the history
of the Olympics. The Swedish pentathlete
Hans-Gunnar Liljenwall was
disqualified, as he drank several beers just
before competing.

games seem to be the first
Olympics to be transmitted in
color to the whole world

For the first time, East and West
Germany competed as separate teams.
Beethoven's Ode to Joy was played
when East and West Germany arrived
in the stadium.

5,530 athletes took part in these Olympics
(4,750 men and 780 women)
There were 172 events in 20 sports
Athletes broke 22 world records. It’s
important to highlight that Jim Hines
achieved an unthinkable mark in the 100m
event (9.95s)

20. These Olympics took place at the
“Estadio Olímpico Universitario”.
These were the first Olympics to use a
synthetic all-weather surface for track
and field events; the "Tartan".

22. THE EMBLEM
The Olympic rings inspired the "geometric
design“ of Mexico 1968 emblem. It is a
combination of the five rings over the year
of the games. The design came from the
collaboration of three artists. It recalls the
patterns of the Huichole Indians.
