1. Great events around Marrakesh
As with every country, Morocco has a lot of great festivals, events or exhibitions to offer. Many of
them can be reached easily from Marrakesh, the capital of Morocco. Many people take a relaxing
riad like the DarDarma with good food and drink and a lot of possibilities to relax as a base for tours
to significant festivities. Some of them which you should not miss will be listed here. Further
information will also be available at your riad or any tourism info.
Gnaoua Festival of Music
The Gnaoua, being an ethnic minority stemming from west-African slaves, organise this annual music
festival in Essaouira on the Atlantic coast, a two-hour drive from Marrakesh. The Gnaoua are known
for the rhythmical music, even having influenced Jazz music. Artists like Randy Weston, Pharoah
Sanders or Archie Shep did recordings with Gnaoua-musicians. The festival features a broad mixture
of musicians and artists. It is definitely an event which should not be missed. It takes place in June.
Moonfest
This festival takes place in August/September in the beautiful region Lalla Takerkoust, just 35 km
from Marrakesh. It is another music festival with artists from all over Morocco and international
artists. It is three days of music which provide good entertainment for almost everyone.
Horse Exhibition
This annual exhibition in El Jadida highlights the beauty of Arabian equestrian culture. Friends of
horse races and other horse-related competitions, shows and conferences will definitely not be
disappointed. There are also cultural performances which can be attended. This exhibition is not only
interesting for fans of horses, but a show for the whole family. It takes place in October and is only a
two-hour drive from Marrakesh.
With those three events only being a small extract of what Morocco has to offer in terms of cultural
events, this country is definitely worth a visit. There is lots to see, lots to do and great experiences to
be made!
