Scientists have genetically modified tomatoes to be salt-tolerant by increasing their production of transport proteins that move salt into plant vacuoles. This allows the tomatoes to thrive in salty irrigation water. Researchers have also genetically engineered sheep to produce Factor IX, a blood clotting protein, in their milk as a treatment for hemophilia B. Another GM crop is "Golden Rice" which produces beta-carotene to address vitamin A deficiencies in developing countries.
