Maybe others have told you it’s a terrible, scary-looking, confusing diagram of how corporations try to “do agile.” Or maybe you’ve experienced the scrum-of-scrums-from-hell where no one knows what’s really going on, what the product you’re all working on is really supposed be, or why you’re even doing it in the first place. So you might be skittish about talking about it altogether! We’ll use story telling from our internal XD practice, shining a light on what we’ve found that works and what doesn’t. Creating a mobile learning companion for a course or seminar is a great way to enhance face-to-face teaching, but doing so effectively presents both design and technical challenges. For the Fall 2011 offering of Paul's user interface design course (CMPT-363) at Simon Fraser University he undertook the task of creating a mobile course companion for his students. In this presentation Paul will guide you through the fundamentals of mobile learning, including its potential role in formal learning, how to use UX viewpoints and techniques to provide more effective mobile learning, and demonstrate his SFU mobile course companion. He will also share the reasons why he choose WordPress for delivering mobile learning, and provide a brief guided tour of the key plugins and customizations used to deliver a great mobile learning user experience.

The deck I used for my talk at UXIndia 2014, Bangalore. The backstory: Over the last few years that I have been doing user research, I have seen the practice of user research - more specifically, the methods, tools & techniques that we use - stay pretty much unchanged. But then look at the way we consume, create and communicate now. It has undergone tremendous shifts. We have become more mobile and more connected than ever before. Our attention spans and consumption patterns are completely bite-sized. Given that user research is about knowing people, its but obvious that as people evolve, the practice should evolve too. Through this talk, I wanted to explore how user research can evolve in order to best leverage these big 'shifts' and blend with people's everyday lives. A lot of context is lost without the accompanying 'talk' per se. But I hope the slides give a decent idea.
