Bullet 1 – Under the direction of Tom Wall, the newly Associate University Libraries of Public Services. Tom negotiated this within his contract that Instruction & Outreach served as a separate unit instead of under reference. Bullet 2 – Emily was located on West Campus and Greta was located on East Campus to ensure an instruction presence on each campus. Both worked extensively with faculty encouraging them to sign-up for library instruction and incorporate literacy skills within their courses. They also worked diligently with subject librarians encouraging them to provide library instruction for their departments. Bullet 3 – Funding was made available to hire two instruction interns currently pursuing MLS degrees at the local peer institutions to address the increasing demand for instruction experience preferred for most entry-level positions. With UNC (#1 ranked library school in the nation and NCCU the only HBCU offering MLS program) we had diverse pool of potential candidates for interns. ( speak about the programs – day/night) A few years later, the University Dean (Robert Thompson) provided funding for a two-year fellowship to hire a recent MLS graduate to focus on undergraduate research. In 2007, the dept. received two additional members: myself as the 2006-2008 Diversity Library Fellow selecting instruction & outreach as my specialized area in my 2 nd year, and Sherri Brown a visiting unpaid intern seeking practical experience working in an academic research library.
Bullet 1 – provided opportunity for instruction librarians to discuss teaching strategies and methodologies in response to the research needs of its users. Bullet 2 - On 14 June, nine Duke Libraries staff members and colleagues from Furman University, Davidson College, and Johnson C. Smith University met at the Furman University library in Greenville, SC, for a workshop titled "Active Learning in Library Instruction." The workshop speaker was Trudi Jacobson, a well-known author and lecturer in the field of information literacy. The event was made possible through generous support from the Duke Endowment.
