4. Teaching and
Learning in the 21st
Century
As learners we are not
bound by rules. Our
learning can take many
different shapes and
roads and
paths. Technology
Enables this.

For students with special
and diverse needs, the use
of iPads is not just a fun
device, it is (particularly
because of the interactivity
and functionality of the
touch screen interface)
giving them access to
learning opportunities that
did not previously exist.

11. Having iPads has given
students more
independence in their
learning; teachers a new
tool to personalise the
learning for each student;
and parents the
opportunity to share and
support their child’s
learning journey.

Students took photos on their
iPad during travel training
then used these photos to
support their recount writing.
Some students used ‘stories
about me’ app to write their
recount using the photos as a
prompt.
I use iPads to
support student
handwriting
sessions by using
tracing and writing
apps.
I have used iPads to
assist the kids with
counting. Using

We have been using the iPad's
to record students during
food technology sessions to
record the improvement
in specific skills for each
student and show it
back to them to help them
improve.
We have used iPads to
take photos of cooking
sessions to make our
own recipe book using

16. Differentiating Instruction
iPad devices allow teachers to tailor
content delivery to individual student
needs.
This can be done via presentation,
video, audio, image or document. All of
which can be tailored and shared with
individual students based on their
learning needs. Cloud File Sharing
services such as Dropbbox, Showbie,
and even Google Drive, give teachers
the ability to share learning materials to
individual students’ folders, which
contain their individualized learning
materials.

17. Flipping Content Delivery
Flipping Content Delivery involves
having teachers use screen casting
applications such as ScreenChomp,
ShowMe, Explain Everything, and
Educreations as well as video creation
apps (iMovie, Reel Director,) to produce
short instructional videos to provide front
loading support for students.
The use of instructional video (Khan
Academy, Math Train) for learning
provides individualised support that can
be viewed time and time again to assist
a student to develop the understanding
they need.

19. Sensory LearningThe iPad devices touch interface allows
students to manipulate content and
objects in a wide variety of applications.
App’s such as Pic Collage, Doodle
Buddy, Puppet Pals, and Toontastic,
Story Robe allow students to alter
images and add audio to demonstrate
understandings.
As per the iPad devices accessibility
features, audio feedback included in
many apps is another great way to
support learning. Much of what can be
read on an iPad by a student can also
be read to them. Students can also
highlight text and take take typed or
audio notes.
The use also of Augmented Reality
Apps (Aurasma, ColAR Mix) can foster

22. Enhancing Communication
There are a wide variety of applications
to support both the development of
communication as well as assisting
students to communicate with their
teachers and peers.
App’s such as Stories About Me,
Proloquo2Go and iSpeakWord, allow
students to express their wants,
emotions and understandings in ways
that otherwise may be inconceivable.

23. Personalised Learning
A real power in having students use an
iPad device is through having students
personalise their own learning. Through
using the applications and assistive iPad
features to help them demonstrate
learning outcomes, students can
articulate in their own words what
understandings they’ve met.
The way in which students can do this is
only limited by their imagination. Let
them discover and showcase their
learning in their own way.
Our aim to be one of the, if not the, most inclusive college in the country.
We run an integrated Alliance Model where support centre students are placed in determined mainstream classrooms for x hours per week.
