Colombia has 32 departments and six major regions (Caribbean,
Pacific, Andean, Orinoco, Amazon, and Insular). Colombia has
many development centers and nine metropolitan areas, each
with a population of over 500,000 people: Bogota, Medellin, Cali,

GOVERNMENT
Colombia is a Social State of Law organized as a unitary
constitutional republic with a political centralization and
administrative decentralization. Public power is divided into
three branches: legislative, executive, and judicial where various
supervisory bodies govern such as the Attorney General’s Office,
the Comptroller’s Office and the Citizen’s Oversight Organizations.
Since August 2010, Juan Manuel Santos Calderon serves as

In 2001, the Carnival of Blacks and Whites was declared a
National Cultural Heritage. It is held during the first week of
January in Pasto; the Andean city is located in southwestern
Colombia. It is a native cultural display that expresses the

region over the centuries: its mix of indigenous rituals and the
cultural expressions of the Spanish and Africans.

It is held in Valledupar, the capital of the department of
Cesar in the Colombian Caribbean. During this time, the
city becomes one big party, filled with parades, shows, and
unforgettable music. Today, the festival has a significant
recognition at the national and international level, thanks to
the participation of Vallenato musicians from Aruba, Cuba,
United States, France, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Venezuela, and
other Caribbean countries.
Since 1959, Santa Marta celebrates the Fiestas del Mar (Festival
of the Sea) in July, month during which the city celebrates its
birthday. The National Nautical Games consist of water sport
competitions followed by a regatta. For five days, the most
beautiful bay in the Americas, as it is known for, becomes the
ideal scenario gathering athletes and lovers of nautical and sport
tourism. The city showcases cultural activities around sun and
beach, music, dance, and fun.

The half-mile stretch that comprises the Salsodromo,
audiences can appreciate from the bleachers a taste of the
world’s largest salsa display that took 6 months to prepare

The San Agustin Archaeological Park, declared a World Heritage

(SOUTH) This area hosts 750 different species living in a tropical rainforest. In Leticia,
the capital and its surroundings, it is common to find flocks of more than 20 species
of parrots, parakeets, and macaws.
(Mid Section) It is one of the richest and most diverse regions of birds in the planet. It
is inhabited by over 800 species of birds. Bogota and its surroundings offer marvelous

In Medellin (Antioquia, in the northwest) and its vicinity are witnesses to more than
300 species including some that are endemic. You can find species like the antbird,
the Cuaca guan bird, fruit eating birds, the tapaculo bird, gralarias and mountain
tanagers. Traveling the north of this area, there are another 120 endemic and
endangered species among which are the cotinga and gralaria birds.
The Coffee Cultural Landscape offers several places for birdwatching such as the
Alicante river, the Bellavista Nature Reserve, and the Rio Claro reserve, where you can

In this region there are about 700 species, 50 of which are considered regionally

there which are considered endemic and endangered such as the Sapphire-
bellied Hummingbird. It is also home to the greater flamingo, small woodpeckers,

Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta stands out for its impressive birdwatching locations.
There are 635 different species of birds including parakeets, hummingbirds, 3 short-
billed leaf tossers, gralarias of Santa Marta, the tapaculo bird, flycatchers, warblers
and mountain tanagers.
There are about 470 species living here. In Villavicencio, the main city of eastern
region of Colombia, you can observe the hoatzin a.k.a. the stinkbird, guamucos,
orinoco geese, storks, ibexes, herons and picocucharas (Platalea spoonbills).
