The National Association of Realtors (NAR) conducted a study on Home Buyer and Seller Generational Trends. NAR compared the six generational categories: Millennials, Gen X, Younger Boomers, Older Boomers, Silent Gen, and G.I. Gen. View the presentation for a summary of this study.

 Older Boomers: 58-66
 Silent Generation: 67-87

3. Home Buyers 2013:
 Millennials: 28%
 Gen X: 31%
 Younger Boomers: 18%
 Older Boomers: 14%
 Silent Generation: 10%
 G.I. Generation: <1%

4. Prior to Buying a Home:
 65% rented an apartment
 22% lived with parents, relatives, or friends
Where/Why they Buy:
 Move to shorter distances from previous
residence(typically 10 miles)
 Convenience to jobs, affordability, and school
districts are main driving factors of
purchasing.

5.  65% of recent Older Gen Home Buyers owned
their previous residence.
Where/Why they purchased:
 25% purchased in a senior-related housing.
 Further away from their previous residence
(20 miles) but closer to friends/family and
health facilities
 Factors: landscaping for energy conservation
and environmentally friendly community
features.

6.  Younger buyers tend to make sacrifices on
price, size, and condition.
 Older buyers make few to no compromises.
 As the age of home buyers increase, age of
the home decreases.
 Home buyer satisfaction with the home
buying process increases as age increases.

7.  Younger buyers are more likely to want the
help of an agent to understand the home
buying process.
 Younger buyers place honesty and
trustworthiness as most important aspects in
agents. Where as older buyers focus more on
agent’s knowledge of neighborhoods.
 Younger buyers were referred to an agent,
older buyers used an agent they previously
did business with before.
