Multiple industries have experienced changes which dramatically improved their ability to delivery quality services, at improved cost. From telecommunications, to manufacturing, to banking, these changes were largely based on increased levels of standardization and automation. Cloud computing has brought a similar change to the IT industry, and standardization and automation is yielding improvements in IT processes and the quality of user services.

There are two major factors driving the cost reductions. The first is infrastructure costs driven by consolidation and virtualization. This is reflected in lower capital cost by consolidating servers and improved harware utilization through virtualization. The second major factor is labor leverage. Labor costs are reduced by enabling people to work smarter, automating routine tasks and improving productivity. Transition line: … The labor savings are driven by service management, let’s see what it provides.
Progression toward transformation starts with optimizing existing assets/processes and leverages best in class technology at each transition Each step balances improvements in efficiency and effectiveness and can be measured by business returns. An organization can move to cloud systematically taking one step at a time, or they can move right to a public OR private cloud deployment if it aligns best with their strategic vision for the business. As your clients’ IT partner, you are in a unique position to help them understand their options and lay out a roadmap to cloud. Readying the infrastructure requires the implementation of a Dynamic Infrastructure: consolidate your servers and storage, implement virtualization technologies to increase utilization, standardizing processes for operational efficiency, automating procedures for a more flexible delivery and enabling clients for self-service. Then you identify common workloads and set up shared resources, and finally, to achieve a true cloud-enabled environment, clients must be able to provision the workloads in a dynamic fashion.

So now let us turn to a framework to explain better how cloud computing can be delivered. First and foremost, no matter what cloud service you actually want to provide to your end users it must be integrated effectively with your existing and third party resources and services. So whether it is raw infrastructure services, combined patterns of middleware and infrastructure for platform as a service solutions, or applications and business processes for Software as a Service or Business process as a Service, they need to integrate and they need to be protected and enabled by an effective service management, security and business planning /lifecycle management. It is this latter that will enable you to control the environment more effectively, maximize productivity and minimize associated labor costs, and ensure a resilient safe environment for your business users.
