3. NAMASKAR & WARM GREETINGS !
Respected Member,
It is with great elation that I wish to share with you the developments taken place during the last quarter.
With the privilege bestowed upon me as your new President last year, I had stated in my first message that my foremost
objective is to honour our Past Presidents who as precursors, not only generated funds for IAS, but always created incremental
value to the Society as a whole. Today, Indo-American Society stands on the solid foundation laid by them and hence
to recognize them in an appropriate function was a remarkable idea. We decided to honour and felicitate them on the
Society’s 55th Founders Day Celebration which was held on April 29, 2013 at Bandra by the hands of US Consul General,
Mr.PeterD.HaaswhowastheChiefGuesttotheevent. TheprogramwasalsogracedbytheCommissionerofPoliceDr.SatyapalSingh,
Dr. Mrs. Indu Shahani, Dean HR College, Mr. Joseph Massey, MD & CEO, MCX Stock Exchange and Mr. Keshav Murugesh, Global CEO,
WNS & Co-Chairman, NASSCOM BPO Forum. This program was also unique as we additionally felicitated some outstanding individuals
from different sections of the society. The program was a resounding success by the feedback received
and widely covered by the Press and Media. To cherish these memories a glimpse of photographs
captured on that day are being featured in this issue.
Another social event which I envisaged for the benefit of our members and to have an
opportunity to develop and enhance fellowship was a Picnic, but unfortunately it didn’t take off
due of poor response from the members. This issue also features the US Ambassador Ms. Nancy
Powell’s interactive reception organized jointly by Indo-American Society, Indo-American Chamber
of Commerce and Namaste America in the month of April 2013.
On the revenue front, new courses were introduced, workshops/ seminars were conducted.
All this was possible because of the unflinching support; I received from time to time from IAS
members and my Executive Committee, especially core group ofTaskforce committee members
and Secretariat staff for the success of Founders Day program.
I hope and look forward to your assured support and request you to kindly continue to lend
me your helping hand for achieving greater heights.

Indo-American Society celebrated its 55th anniversary Founders Day at the Indian Education
Society hall at Bandra West amidst a glittering gathering from all walks of life.
In the chequered history of the Indo-American Society 29th April 2013 will be forever remembered
for playing the national anthems of India and USA bringing out the significance of the Founders’
Day marking the completion of 55 years of golden service to the cause of Indo-American friendship
and co-operation between the two nations.
A nostalgic presentation of the early beginnings with our Society’s office location at Kitab Mahal, where so many events have
taken place from Sir Homy Mody’s times was a great treat to watch !
Our current President Mr. Dilip Dalal deserves heartiest congratulations for taking his entire team into confidence and giving
an excellent audio visual presentation and specially for remembering each and every past president and giving handsome
awards which will be forever remembered amidst a glittering gathering making many emotional with such honour !
Very appropriately one of the Past Presidents Mr. Shafi Thanawala while accepting the award was bold enough to take the
mike and compliment our President Mr. Dilip Dalal for showing so much affection and regard to Past Presidents who had
served the Society. “This is very special as such honor is not shown in most associations“ he said. This compliment speaks
volumes for the friendship and comradeship within the society fraternity whether they are past or present.
Mr. Peter Haas the Consul General for USA predicted greater comradeship and interaction between USA and India and spoke
about the Secretary of State Mr. Perry visiting India for a strategic alliance between India and USA especially because our
goals are common and we are the largest democracies in this troubled world he claimed.
Our Chief Guest Mr. Satyapal Singh gave an excellent speech on ‘Combating Terrorism in Mumbai’ and compared 9/11 with
27/11 and claimed that terrorism was doctrinated and grew larger and larger over the years with international connections.
He felt that the root of terrorism was in the mind and public must be alert to forces around them which are likely to do harm
to the nation. He wanted more and more interaction between the people and the police and appreciated Indo- American
Society for organizing such programs.
Several important dignitaries spoke at the meeting and lastly Dr. Rangaraj thanked the audience for making the program
grand success, all in all the Founders Day celebrated on 29th April 2013 to mark 55 years of golden friendship between India
and United States will become an event to remember for years and years to come ...

5. US Ambassador Ms. Nancy Powell while addressing a gathering on ‘Indo – US Relations’ an
event jointly organised by Indo – American Society, Indo - Chamber Of Commerce, West
India Council & Namaste America on April 15, 2013 at Hotel The Orchid, Mumbai said the
Bilateral relations between India and US were stronger today than before in various areas of
trade, culture, education, science and technology, but also stressed the need for enhanced
cooperation with specific focus on infrastructure, defence, energy and child care among
other sectors.
Powell said that the US realised India’s growing role in the world and the region and thus
was seeing how the US could help further enhance it so that both could work together on
a variety of global problems and issues. Citing a Price Waterhouse Coppers study, Powell
mentioned,‘The Indian Economy is slated to be the third largest by the year 2030 with a GDP
of $8 Trillion, but for that to happen there are multiple growth challenges that India has to tackle of which Infrastructure
is one.’
She remarked that a ‘slow pace’ of approval process in India is inhibiting foreign investments, but hoped the future
could be a brighter one provided the government improves its decision – making process, especially those of foreign
investment proposals. She complimented the recent government decision to allow increased FDI in various sectors like
aviation and retail, saying such measures are ‘encouraging’.
“India needs and deserves the best military services in the sub-continent for which the US is ready and prepared to help.
Your security challenges are genuine and the US can help enhance your internal security”, Powell said.
Touching upon healthcare, Powell said it was imperative to ensure that every single child survived till the age of five.
Powell urged companies and NGO’s to work on issues like safe water and safe delivery of babies.

14. Reminiscence
April 21, 2013
Dear President and my friend, DILIP,
Many thanks for the special invitation.
The activity and initiative which I
remember most and was very innovative
was the starting and launching of the
house newsletter LANDMARK during my
Presidentship.
It was great working with one of the
committee members (a Parsee gentleman whose name I cannot
recall) in giving it shape and substance with the help of the then
managing committee. I am proud to see it having grown into a
very impressive and vigorous mouthpiece of the Society.
Warm regards and wish the event every success.
Shafi N.Thanawalla
President (1980 -81)
I had the good fortune of meeting Viren Shah, our past
president of IAS, recently. He was very appreciative of
the work being done by the Society and assured me
that he would definitely come for the Founders Day
event on April 29, 2013.
Unfortunately his sudden demise has left a void.
IAS has lost a stalwart and the Society will miss his
guidance.
Dilip Dalal
May 9, 2013
Dear Dilipbhai,
Thank you for your kind letter of 4th May.
No doubt the program was a great success,
not merely because of large participation of
members and VIP guests but also because of
the new areas of Indo- US co-operation that
you have introduced, namely, terrorism, capital
markets and information technology. This gives
the IAS efforts greater depth and spread in very
essential areas of cooperation.
Please accept my warm appreciation of these initiatives on your part and
of course, many thanks for the honor you did to us. We will look forward
to IAS achieving greater heights under your innovative leadership.
Kind regards,
N. M. Brahmbhatt
It is an Honour and a Pleasure to be a part of the 55th Founders Day Celebration, given my 15+ year association with IAS. I
am proud to have served on the Executive Committee for so many years. I have always been impressed by the High Calibre
of people who gladly give their time for a worthy cause.
I served as President for over a year and a half and I always felt proud to give IAS my time as we hosted Speakers,
Musicians, Scholarships and the annual Young Achievers Award. In fact, I feel very proud of the fact that the IAS Young
Achievers Award began under my Stewardship. I have always encouraged youth participation in such robust organizations
as they are the future of each & every organisation, I am involved with. I also want to thank the IAS staff as they work very
hard to make sure that events such as this come off seamlessly. We all need to give them a round of applause. Thank You

7,00,000 Indians visited
the US in 2012
More than 8 per cent visas have been issued this year
compared to last year in the US,” said US Consular Chief
Deanna Abdeen on Thursday, who spoke to the media to
update and discuss the US visa trends and developments.
Interestingly, the Ash Center for Democratic Governance
and Innovation at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of
Government on Thursday announced that Consular Team
India (CTI) has been chosen as one of the‘Top 25’programs
in this year’s Innovations in American Government Award
competition.
“The 25 semi-finalists represent the top 5 per cent of
the contest’s initial applicant pool. The Innovations in
American Government Awards is the United States’ pre-
eminent program devoted to recognizing and promoting
excellence and creativity in the public sector. The program
highlights exemplary models of government innovation
in the United States at the federal, state, local, and tribal
level,”said US Consular Chief Deanna Abdeen.
CTI encompasses all US consular operations located in
India, including the US Embassy in New Delhi, and the
US Consulates in Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai, and
Kolkata.
“I am continually impressed by the teamwork, dedication,
and high service standards that Consular Team India
(CTI) demonstrates in serving our Indian and US Citizens
customers. This distinction coming from such a prominent
institution promoting innovation is a validation of the
hard work of our consular units across the country,” said
Julia Stanley, the head of all US Consular operations for
India.
Speaking further on the services provided by the CTI,
Abdeen said, “CTI strives to provide excellent consular
services, to both Indian and U.S. citizens.
Whether helping an Indian student reach the U.S. to start
a university program, supporting a business executive
travelling to finalize a contract, facilitating American
parents document the birth of their new baby abroad, or
assisting an immigrant applying for a visa to the United
States, CTI is there. The Ash Center’s award recognizes
CTI’s innovative approach to providing consular services,
an initiative that began in 2009. Instead of each location
workingindependently,consularunitsacrossIndiaformed
a unified team with a common base of information and
shared responsibilities. Today, CTI ensures that each and
every consular customer can expect to receive the same
quality of consular services across India. CTI’s innovations
have also improved performance. Applicants now receive
appointment within 10 days of applying, typically spend
less than 40 minutes at the Embassy or Consulate for an
interview, and printed visas are returned to applicants
within a few days. More than 700,000 Indians visited the
United States in 2012.
This approach to providing consular services reflects the
importance the United States places on our relationship
with India and our commitment to excellence in serving
both Indian and U.S. citizen customers. We are honored
that our efforts are being recognized as one of the ‘Top
25’ programs in this year’s Innovations in American
Government Award competition.”
