Notas do Editor

  1. Maura we’re going to spend a few minutes introducing you to the OpenLab and to open pedagogy, then we’ll head into the activity for today first, here’s our wonderful OpenLab team
  2. Maura - What is the OpenLab? Here’s the one sentence description
  3. Maura - As you know, the OpenLab is one of 4 activities within the Living Lab project
  4. Maura OpenLab is one of 4 activities: - The Gen Ed Seminar brings together a diverse group of Faculty Fellows to re-envision General Education through place-based learning and high-impact educational practices - Part of a larger effort to integrate assessment of general education student learning outcomes across the curriculum - Building an endowment for the newly-established Brooklyn Waterfront Research Center, which aims to raise awareness about critical issues facing Brooklyn's waterfront through research, teaching, and public programming.
  5. Maura - Why is the OpenLab part of the Living Lab project? General education is a focus of the grant, making Gen Ed and the entire curriculum visible to all City Tech and beyond Students making connections, presenting their best work, opportunities to expand audience for their work beyond the walls of the classroom Our campus is small, our college is large, virtual place-based learning can help strengthen our community Now Jody is going to speak briefly about open pedagogy, then Jenna and the community team about the OpenLab’s features and examples
  6. Jody – What is open pedagogy? Why is it beneficial?
  7. Jody
  8. Jody? – OL pioneers were the first cohort of Gen Ed Fellows, but many others jumped on board while we were in beta; Version 1.0 in January 2012
  9. Jody Building (sometimes literally) on the work of other successful Wordpress and Buddypress projects at CUNY
  10. Jody Alina asked Bree about why some courses were public and some private, and how she was able to look at Libby’s courses to supplement what she was studying. There are many reasons to discuss privacy, but today we’re focusing on openness. This is one argument for openness.
  11. Jody Matt’s assignment to have students intermix with students in another course—great idea, and we hope that as our community develops, this will become an even more frequent and beneficial experience for our users
  12. Jody Family, community interacting with student, courses, program, all because the site was open to the public, searchable
  13. Jody “ Forking the Syllabus”—borrowing the idea from open-source code repository practice of attribution and borrowing—this led to a rich conversation over many months
  14. Jody Tweet out the article, extend the conversation. What do we as faculty have to gain from making our pedagogical efforts open?
  15. Jody We can begin to share our ideas with the community locally here on the OpenLab
  16. Jenna - briefly describe features of the OpenLab
  17. http://openlab.citytech.cuny.edu/undergraduateresearch/ - project http://openlab.citytech.cuny.edu/groups/spoons-across-america/ - club http://openlab.citytech.cuny.edu/jbernhard-eportfolio/ - ePF http://openlab.citytech.cuny.edu/openpedagogyopenlab/2012/12/09/openlab-tour/ - more examples Jenna To be able to offer all members of the CityTech community a place to learn, work, and share, the OpenLab is organized by People, Courses, Clubs and Projects.
  18. Jenna Any CityTech Student, Faculty or Staff may create a profile on the OpenLab. The Profile presents the members information, such as academic interests, department, and projects, clubs, and courses they participate in. It also presents the member's recent activity on the OpenLab, including posts, comments, or discussion topics. Most of this interaction is open and available for others to experience. Here members are able to find friends and colleagues with similar interests and explore related projects, clubs and courses. A members profile page also offers new members insight into other areas of the OpenLab.
  19. Jenna Courses on the OpenLab are set up to offer Faculty members the tools to support course collaborations, such as discussion forums, shared docs.
  20. Jenna A course blog is also available to further facilitate student interaction in the course and provides a digital repository for course documents. Here students can post and comment on course topics or assignments or collaborate on group projects.
  21. Jenna Projects on the OpenLab can include anything from faculty research projects and collaborations to student class projects. A project can be used for facilitating discussions, exchanging and sharing docs, and also allows users to keep a linked WP site for presenting project information.
  22. Jenna
  23. Jenna Clubs on the OpenLab allow any member of the College community to grow an online space about particular interest: social or academic. We have found that students, in particular, have taken an interest in this area of the site– which demonstrates that we have a real need for more community building at CityTech.
  24. Clubs on the OpenLab allow any member of the College community to grow an online space about particular interest: social or academic. 26. Maura - In order to get us all started thinking about using open pedagogy on the OpenLab, we’re going to play a brainstorming game
  27. Maura - Explain what is on each deck of cards (Libby to share about Gen Ed SLOs) - Think abstractly about the game on your game card – it’s there to provide inspiration Be sure to explicitly consider what makes your assignment open! One member of our team at each tables as the OpenLab experts to provide support and record the assignment
  28. Maura Report back – tell us a little bit about your assignment Remember that we’ll post these on the OpenLab since we don’t have time for lots of detail right now Do you have any questions for the OpenLab team? For the other groups?
