Shared Doc is located in a shared Google Doc
15. Shared Class Notes
Anyone who is very comfortable
with Google Docs want to take the
first lead in keeping notes?
But this doesn’t mean that others
should not share in the note-taking
load!
no free-riders! ;-)
The lead notetaker can (and should)
ask to switch to someone else every
20-30 minutes

32. Breath Cycle of Learning
There is a natural “in & out” cycle in
team work
We have a similar “in & out” cycle in
how we teach
Intensives are the peak of our
inward, same-time, same-place
interactivity
Between intensives we breath
outward and use Elluminate (same-
time different-place) and The Channel
(same-time different-place)
42. Circle
“Circle” models a physical world
behavior, reminding them of culture
and shared community
It is a pre-Elluminate exercise, causing
participants to be more on time and
more engaged at start of session
There are many more kinds of
icebreakers — take a look at book
“GameStorming” for others that can
be adapted to online.
44. The Syllabus & Agenda
Before each Elluminate I require a
selection of pre-readings, slidecasts,
videos, or short assignments
Ideally I should say something about
WHY each selection is important — For
instance, I add Keyquotes to readings
45.
46.
47. Cooperative Learning:
Students Working in Small
Groups
KEYQUOTE: “Collaborative group work
requires careful planning on the part of
the instructor, and is not without its
difficulties for students. But the benefits
can be substantial, including increased
participation by students in all
components of the course, better PDF: Stanford Center for Teaching &
understanding and retention of material, Learning (Winter 2009). Speaking of
mastery of skills essential to success in Teaching - Stanford University
the course or in a career, and increased (Retrieved from http://
enthusiasm for self-directed learning— www.stanford.edu/dept/CTL/
the kind of enthusiasm that can spur Newsletter/cooperative.pdf )
students on to independent research or
honors projects.”
48. Pre-Elluminate Readings
Should be about ~1 hour, something
that students can do easily
I also ask participants to post some
first thoughts
During the session I will randomly
ask a participant to summarize their
thoughts on one of the advance
readings
I will also quote useful first thoughts
You can also offer optional material
for advanced students
49. More Context Needed
“In person facilitation is something I'm interested
in, but I hadn't given any thought to online
facilitation. The post outlining ways to get involved
in online facilitation was interesting.
More context might help me understand this topic.
What are some examples of online facilitation in Bria
personal and professional settings? It might just be Schlottman
that it's late and end of quarter, but my mind keeps
going back to facilitating team meetings on skype,
which seems different than what was discussed in
the videos.”
50. Pre-Elluminate Readings
For some topics there are too many
advance readings
I will sometimes ask for a post about
the optional readings in a forum
Better, I ask participants to each
choose one and prepare a single slide
I ask the participants to be ready to
guide the discussion when their slide
comes up
51. What is Whuffie?
Whuffie is:
The currency of social capital!
The five principles of whuffie are:
1. Stop talking & start listening.
2. Become a part of the community
you serve.
3. Create amazing customer
experiences.
4. Embrace the chaos.
5. Find your higher purpose.
53. Check In
“Check In” allows the participants in
the session to feel listened to and
appreciated
We ask typically an provocative or
inspiring question
There isn’t enough time to do this in
Elluminate so we use Google Docs
You can do this in less then 5 minutes
as everyone simultaneously edits
We have had many as 75 edit the
Check In at the same time.
54. Type a few words into the
GOOGLE DOCS
Check In SHARED NOTES a next to

else, use different colors
58. Shared Notes
We also use the Google Docs for
Shared Notes
It can be useful to ask someone to be
focused on Share Notes, but best to
encourage all to participate
If someone is focused, swap them
with someone else after 20-30
minutes
People who miss meeting can add to
Shared Notes while watching
recording
61. Breakouts
Elluminate has the ability to “break
out” into separate rooms, useful for
many smaller team discussions and
exercises
Breakout rooms can still participate
globally by using the Share Notes for
communication between rooms
62. Shared Notes between Encourage communication and modeling
