As newly minted Human Resource employees, whether you be seasoned or new to the career, you are aware it takes time to adjust to a new company.
So it is probably no surprise to know that per Maren Hogan from Talent Management and HR mentions that ‘one third of new hires quit their jobs after 6 months’
The day you start your job, an exciting, nervous, awkward, sometimes overwhelming and frightening experience.
Why this happens: Without creating a plan, you may run in with a whole bunch of misconceptions about your role
You might try to make changes without learning the processes
Bypass key people that could help guide you in this new environment.
Throw all these bad newbie habits out the window and let’s create that plan.
You may be asking yourself ‘How can I get accustomed to this new company?’ and ‘How can I transition into work life here smoothly?’
Well ask no further my fellow Human resource employee’s, there is a process you can use and help other employees at this company when they get hired on.
The process to answer these questions is by creating a ’30-60-90 Day Plan’
According to Heather Huhman in the article ‘Follow the ’30-60-90’ Plan When Starting a New Job’ for Business Insider, creating a plan helps us with were we are going and where we want to be.
Creating goals in 30 day increments helps you reach your full potential and gives you confidence in your new role.
Also giving yourself direction, makes you feel more confident and that is a great impression to start with.
Also within the 30 days, learn as much as you can.
Learn your role, understand the company culture
Ask questions to better understand what are the objectives and goals of your department
Explore and throw open those doors.
Lisa Quast in her article ‘Starting a new Job – What you need to Know to Succeed’ used this acronym
“Study” S=Survey your surroundings, T=Take time to analyze and learn the important things, U-Understand the people situation, D=Do not make any hast decision, Y=Yes you can!
What a great Acronym to help you achieve your goals and survive the first 30 days.
So your starting to get to know the company better
You have a good idea what your role is now
Do you feel settled in yet?
You may be feeling like you have learned by looking and listening, but now that you have a foundation to work on, what will you do now?
Will you continue on your 30-day goal set or just get comfortable and lost in the system?
What questions should you ask yourself next to help continue the path?
Since you have been around and developed a sense of what is expected of you, show what you can do.
Ask yourself, what can I do to help the company grow?
Flex your communication skills
Showcase you :When you are in a position to do so, contribute to the conversation
Show that you understand what is needed and are capable of delivering
Be flexible and adaptable in your position
Let’s Reflect: Up to this point we have been learning a lot and slowly getting our feet wet
Why not take a moment to make sure you have done all the goals you wanted in the first 60 days. Cause we are not done yet, there is still another 30 days to go! Lucky you.
So we have come to the home stretch in the 90-day plan: Heather Huhman, describes this stage as ‘the transformation stage’
I think of a butterfly transformation, when we are fully comfortable and developed in our own skin.
It is here we move forward
Consider these goals for the next 30 days : Learn from your mistakes when you first came to work here, do not regress!
Always look for new opportunity on projects and be familiar with them enough to offer solutions
Become more involved,
So are you comfortable now? : When you reach your 90 days in this company take the time to look back,
Did you do all the things you wanted in these 90 days?
How comfortable do you feel in this company?
What have you done to get your bearings?
Pay it forward: As a Human Resource Professional this type of goal setting is ideal to keep focused and utilize your time
It also helps to be familiar to assist new hires of all departments
Everyone wants to do their best when starting a new job
Exercise : Since I have given you a lot of information, let us do a mental exercise
Think of all the things you want to change since you have been here.
Exercise : Now imagine all the changes as a piece of paper.
Crumple the paper and throw it out!
You just got here, follow the 30-60-90 game plan and then draft up your list
Final Thoughts : I hope you enjoy your time here, learn as much as you can
Check off those milestones and goals
Focus on how you can grow with the company and then soar to new heights.
Welcome to the Human Resource Department : Now get out there and start brain storming your plan
I hope you learned a valuable skill set
Enjoy the rest of your day, thank you.
