SAMR Model

In simple terms, SAMR is the acronym for
summarizing a four-stage model for looking at and
understanding one's use of educational technology

4 Stages to Integration
• 1 - Substitution: technology acts as a direct tool
   substitute with no functional change.

• 2 - Augmentation: technology acts as a direct tool
   substitute with functional improvement.

• 3 - Modification: technology allows for significant task
   redesign.

• 4 - Redefinition: technology allows for the creation of
   new tasks, previously inconceivable.

An Example

• Mrs. Smith is a classroom teacher who
 teaches writing. Some time ago, the
 primary mode for writing in class was
 pencil/pen and paper.
Substitution
         Students use a word processor for
Paper
         their writing.
Pencil
         Students can now easily edit and
         format their writing.

         Published student work is now
         printed rather than handwritten.

         Students can save various drafts of
         their work and can produce
         multiple copies of the finished
         product.
Augmentation
Word
processor       Students improve their writing
                utilizing embedded tools in the word
Edit            processor like spelling & grammar
capabilities    check and the built-in thesaurus.
Font, Size,
                Images, digital photographs &
Style
                graphics are incorporated in the
Print, print,   document.
PRINT
                Students choose easily from layouts
                & alternate page designs to enhance
                their product.

                            Shift the focus of some of assignments

                            to be collaborative.

                            Students use online wikis to write in

  • 9. An Example • Mrs. Smith is a classroom teacher who teaches writing. Some time ago, the primary mode for writing in class was pencil/pen and paper.
  • 10. Substitution Students use a word processor for Paper their writing. Pencil Students can now easily edit and format their writing. Published student work is now printed rather than handwritten. Students can save various drafts of their work and can produce multiple copies of the finished product.
  • 11. Augmentation Word processor Students improve their writing utilizing embedded tools in the word Edit processor like spelling & grammar capabilities check and the built-in thesaurus. Font, Size, Images, digital photographs & Style graphics are incorporated in the Print, print, document. PRINT Students choose easily from layouts & alternate page designs to enhance their product.
  • 12. Modification Shift the focus of some of assignments Spell Check to be collaborative. Grammar Check Students use online wikis to write in Built-in Thesaurus small groups, conduct peer editing & Digital images (clip art, photographs, scanned) feedback, and comment on each group's final products. Layout options (themes, page design) Work on the projects can be done asynchronously out of class. The final writing projects are shared electronically with the wider school community through the class website/blog.
  • 13. Redefinition The class collaborates with other classes Online locally or globally on a common issue or collaboration problem. Asynchronous learning: email, Students research and share their findings in discussion boards, order to find a common solution. blogs The project has grown to be cross- Chats & curriculum and multidisciplinary, utilizing the videoconferencing strengths of the students in different classes. Students use a variety of multimedia to collect, communicate, and distribute their findings and conclusions. Various technologies are used to communicate and share information between the various school groups.
