Unit 30 – Evaluation
In this blog we have been looking into the advertising industry and the developing our
understanding towards the conventions and techniques of advertising. This was a very
interesting topic to me because it had a lot of design elements and like working on the tasks
at that time.
In task 1 we were assigned with looking for the three terms Logos, Ethos and Pathos. This is
the triangle for advertisement, where you could persuade an audience based on how well
the speaker or product appeals to the audience. I understood this theory quite well and
knew how I could apply it to my advert to give the appeal I needed to persuade my target
audience. With this theory set in mind we were given a template and told that we had to
find examples. Some of the examples that I chose were the ‘Ipod Nano, Coca Cola and Evian
etc.’I chose these certain products as examples because they related to the product that I
wanted to advertise, so by looking at these examples I could grab certain conventions and
apply them to my advert later on. I felt this exercise was helpful because it gave me more in-
depth knowledge by the way things are advertised and shown the audience.
Task 2 was similar to Task 1 because we had to look at adverts and examine the certain
conventions. The difference between the two tasks is that we had to look for certain types
of adverts such as ‘Realist Narrative, Animation, Documentary and Talking Heads etc.’
During this task we had to explain what happened in the advert and why it is seen as that
type of advert. This interesting to me because I did not know that there were given names
to the way an advert is produced. I believe I did well in understanding the different type of
advertising and also explaining it in my blog.
Task 3 was a simple task were I was assigned with looking at two companies that worked to
ensure that the advertising industry is kept in check the two companies that we were told to
look at where ASA and Ofcom. I already had knowledge on these companies as in my other
classes we had to look at the same companies because they check up on most of the media
industry. Even though this task was small it allowed me to wide what I knew about these
companies and show that they not only work in one sector of the media industry.
The next task we were given was another small assignment but it was on a part of the
advertising industry that I did not know. We had to look into the source of information, the
way that advertiser gets there information so they know if a product that they are trying to
sell is doing well or if they need to go back to the drawing board and improve their
methods. This task explains all about ‘Rates Cards, Information Packs and Research
Agencies’ which are the main methods used to get the information back to the advertiser. I
did not really understand this task because the way that information is perceived is quite
complicated. By the end of this task with the help from the internet and tutor I started the
understand how the information is given (examples in blog). I believe I could comfortably
talk about this topic.
Task 5 was a simple as in another class I had to look into the audience identification of
qualitative and quantitativeresearch. My knowledge of these topic were quite in-depth
because of this and writing this task up was a refresher for me to test myself on what I need
to know and what else I can learn from a different tutor. I am comfortable about this topic
and have learn that no matter if this it advertising or radio etc. that the quantitative and
qualitative can be applied to find and order certain information so that it can be presented
to the advertiser easily and understandable. We also had to look into another company
which is BARB an organisation responsible for providing the official measurement of UK
television audiences. This was another thing that I have looked at in other lessons so
portraying the information would be easier than other task that I had to deal with. Overall
this was the easiest task because I already knew what needed to be said.
For Task 6 we spent the lesson looking into the different type of audience and to see what
kind of audience we are such as ‘The Explorer, the person who
feels like they must discover something new’. This task helped
me to see what kind of audience my advert would be aimed at.
Also it the main thing that I learnt that the demographic is
broken down into 6 groups, and labels them by using a letter
code to describe the income and status of the member of each
group. I can apply this method of finding my target audience
quite easily but I can also take this knowledge and put it
towards other assignments later down the line. Other these
tasks I have learnt a lot of things that will help me not only with
the tasks but with the entire media course. I have enjoyed these tasks because they have
been interesting and filed with different things to do. I believe that I have done a good job
with every single task, applying myself to work and take in this information.
We were given another assignment to do that was put into the same bog as before this
assignment was name HA3 – Object Of Desire. In this assignment we were told to pick a
product that we would like to advertise, something that we desire and use a lot. I chose the
IPhone 4 because it is something use almost every day and I believed that I could advertise
it pretty well.
After we had chosen our product to advertise we were told to research advertisements for
that product and analysis what the conventions and target audience were for this product. I
analysed two different apple product adverts, one old and one knew. They appeared to
have a theme throughout the advert no matter how far apart they were released. The target
audience were young adults to teenagers because they were the people who had the
money or could get the money for this type of product and also the technology looks more
attractive to a younger audience because it is new to them. I thought that my analysis of the
these advert were very good because I look into them very in depth and looked to apply
some of the conventions that were used in the advert and put them towards my own ideas.
After analysing the advert I was asked by the tutor to come up with an idea for an iPhone
advert. Where I had to present this said Idea to tutor. The full details of the presentation
can be found on my blog. In all I thought that I presented in a clear and precise manner.
Where my tutor could understand the concept of the idea and be able to give me feedback
in how to make it a fully-fledged idea. I also made some mood boards for my idea but these
didn’t turn out so well due to time and that I had my mind set on a specific idea.
Finally it came down to the producing the advert, which immediately I ran into a problem as
it was very hard to record the IPhone with a camera because the screen reflects the camera
back towards it so the quality of the shots were blurry and mediocre. After talking with my
tutor I found out that it would be too unprofessional for me to record my advert with a
camera. I had to all back on my second idea using after effects. I had to get a iPhone 4 and
mask it over screenshots that I have taken with the iPhone to give a crisp and clean cut shot.
This made my job harder as I had to animate the screenshot to making my initial idea. This
task proved to be difficult but I am happy with the final edit as the animations look fluent
and the overall shots of the iPhone look professional. I believe that this idea was the right
choice to go for because the quality of the advert was really good and it would have taken
longer to get the right angle if I recorded it with a camera. If I could do this task again, the
things I would change are the way I approached the after effects project. Taking more time
in ensuring that each animated shot was clear and fluent.
In conclusion I believe that I did a good job across the entire project, being able to apply the
things that I learnt I into my final piece. Also I could explain the information I had gained
comfortable and blog it to the extent that if someone reads it then they would be able to
understand the information I am trying to perceive to them.

Unit 30 evaluation

  • 1. Unit 30 – Evaluation In this blog we have been looking into the advertising industry and the developing our understanding towards the conventions and techniques of advertising. This was a very interesting topic to me because it had a lot of design elements and like working on the tasks at that time. In task 1 we were assigned with looking for the three terms Logos, Ethos and Pathos. This is the triangle for advertisement, where you could persuade an audience based on how well the speaker or product appeals to the audience. I understood this theory quite well and knew how I could apply it to my advert to give the appeal I needed to persuade my target audience. With this theory set in mind we were given a template and told that we had to find examples. Some of the examples that I chose were the ‘Ipod Nano, Coca Cola and Evian etc.’I chose these certain products as examples because they related to the product that I wanted to advertise, so by looking at these examples I could grab certain conventions and apply them to my advert later on. I felt this exercise was helpful because it gave me more in- depth knowledge by the way things are advertised and shown the audience. Task 2 was similar to Task 1 because we had to look at adverts and examine the certain conventions. The difference between the two tasks is that we had to look for certain types of adverts such as ‘Realist Narrative, Animation, Documentary and Talking Heads etc.’ During this task we had to explain what happened in the advert and why it is seen as that type of advert. This interesting to me because I did not know that there were given names to the way an advert is produced. I believe I did well in understanding the different type of advertising and also explaining it in my blog. Task 3 was a simple task were I was assigned with looking at two companies that worked to ensure that the advertising industry is kept in check the two companies that we were told to look at where ASA and Ofcom. I already had knowledge on these companies as in my other classes we had to look at the same companies because they check up on most of the media industry. Even though this task was small it allowed me to wide what I knew about these companies and show that they not only work in one sector of the media industry. The next task we were given was another small assignment but it was on a part of the advertising industry that I did not know. We had to look into the source of information, the way that advertiser gets there information so they know if a product that they are trying to sell is doing well or if they need to go back to the drawing board and improve their methods. This task explains all about ‘Rates Cards, Information Packs and Research Agencies’ which are the main methods used to get the information back to the advertiser. I did not really understand this task because the way that information is perceived is quite complicated. By the end of this task with the help from the internet and tutor I started the understand how the information is given (examples in blog). I believe I could comfortably talk about this topic.
  • 2. Task 5 was a simple as in another class I had to look into the audience identification of qualitative and quantitativeresearch. My knowledge of these topic were quite in-depth because of this and writing this task up was a refresher for me to test myself on what I need to know and what else I can learn from a different tutor. I am comfortable about this topic and have learn that no matter if this it advertising or radio etc. that the quantitative and qualitative can be applied to find and order certain information so that it can be presented to the advertiser easily and understandable. We also had to look into another company which is BARB an organisation responsible for providing the official measurement of UK television audiences. This was another thing that I have looked at in other lessons so portraying the information would be easier than other task that I had to deal with. Overall this was the easiest task because I already knew what needed to be said. For Task 6 we spent the lesson looking into the different type of audience and to see what kind of audience we are such as ‘The Explorer, the person who feels like they must discover something new’. This task helped me to see what kind of audience my advert would be aimed at. Also it the main thing that I learnt that the demographic is broken down into 6 groups, and labels them by using a letter code to describe the income and status of the member of each group. I can apply this method of finding my target audience quite easily but I can also take this knowledge and put it towards other assignments later down the line. Other these tasks I have learnt a lot of things that will help me not only with the tasks but with the entire media course. I have enjoyed these tasks because they have been interesting and filed with different things to do. I believe that I have done a good job with every single task, applying myself to work and take in this information. We were given another assignment to do that was put into the same bog as before this assignment was name HA3 – Object Of Desire. In this assignment we were told to pick a product that we would like to advertise, something that we desire and use a lot. I chose the IPhone 4 because it is something use almost every day and I believed that I could advertise it pretty well. After we had chosen our product to advertise we were told to research advertisements for that product and analysis what the conventions and target audience were for this product. I analysed two different apple product adverts, one old and one knew. They appeared to have a theme throughout the advert no matter how far apart they were released. The target audience were young adults to teenagers because they were the people who had the money or could get the money for this type of product and also the technology looks more attractive to a younger audience because it is new to them. I thought that my analysis of the
  • 3. these advert were very good because I look into them very in depth and looked to apply some of the conventions that were used in the advert and put them towards my own ideas. After analysing the advert I was asked by the tutor to come up with an idea for an iPhone advert. Where I had to present this said Idea to tutor. The full details of the presentation can be found on my blog. In all I thought that I presented in a clear and precise manner. Where my tutor could understand the concept of the idea and be able to give me feedback in how to make it a fully-fledged idea. I also made some mood boards for my idea but these didn’t turn out so well due to time and that I had my mind set on a specific idea. Finally it came down to the producing the advert, which immediately I ran into a problem as it was very hard to record the IPhone with a camera because the screen reflects the camera back towards it so the quality of the shots were blurry and mediocre. After talking with my tutor I found out that it would be too unprofessional for me to record my advert with a camera. I had to all back on my second idea using after effects. I had to get a iPhone 4 and mask it over screenshots that I have taken with the iPhone to give a crisp and clean cut shot. This made my job harder as I had to animate the screenshot to making my initial idea. This task proved to be difficult but I am happy with the final edit as the animations look fluent and the overall shots of the iPhone look professional. I believe that this idea was the right choice to go for because the quality of the advert was really good and it would have taken longer to get the right angle if I recorded it with a camera. If I could do this task again, the things I would change are the way I approached the after effects project. Taking more time in ensuring that each animated shot was clear and fluent. In conclusion I believe that I did a good job across the entire project, being able to apply the things that I learnt I into my final piece. Also I could explain the information I had gained comfortable and blog it to the extent that if someone reads it then they would be able to understand the information I am trying to perceive to them.
